After a 10-month solo backpacking trip through South America, I (Mitch) stopped in Cali, Colombia to take salsa dancing classes 💃🏻. I only planned to stay for a couple weeks, but God had other plans for me. I met a cute Colombian girl (Day) in class, those couple weeks turned into a couple years, and before we knew it...we were married 👰🏻🤵🏼

      @@ProjectUntethered I couldn't agree more. A few years ago I opened a Chase Sapphire card...well, they raised their yearly fee and I needed to figure something out. Cool thing with Chase is you can transfer points to another card! It's always great to get travel point hacks!

    • @ProjectUntethered
      @ProjectUntethered  2 года назад +2

      Yes, I should have mentioned that! I didn’t pay the yearly fee either, I downgraded to a freedom card with no fees, then waited until I was eligible to get the sign-up bonus again. At first I just used their chase travel portal to book flights, but then I discovered your points go way further when you transfer them out!

      The US has the best credit card deals for this strategy, but some other countries have some options as well. You’d have to search if there are any available where you’re from. I tried to use my united miles to travel to Europe and they're wanting much more miles. The cost of flight on Google is less than what united online is requiring me to pay with points and cash. I don't know if United has increased the points you need to fly to Europe now but it seems that is the case. Do you know if united has transfer miles to partner airlines button on their site?

    • @ProjectUntethered
      @ProjectUntethered  2 года назад +1

      Hmm that is interesting! I remember when searching for my flights from Detroit to Madrid, United only costed a few thousand points extra. But it seemed pretty similar-ish to American. Does it change depending on what dates you’re looking at? In some cases, buying a normal flight makes more sense than using points, but I thought US to Europe would be a good use of points normally. You should be able to use United miles on any/most Star Alliance airlines (just google for a complete list), but they are not like bank points where you can transfer to different airlines. I would just google “how to use United miles US to Europe” or something like that. There’s tons of good info out there!

    • @ProjectUntethered
      @ProjectUntethered  2 года назад

      Yeah it seems like a lot of times prices are way higher on the Chase portal for some reason, so I usually transfer points to airline partners instead

    What if you have bad credit?

    • @ProjectUntethered
      @ProjectUntethered  2 года назад

      That makes it a bit trickier unfortunately. You'd have to start with a card that has lower credit requirements, pay it off in full every month, and slowly build your way up to the cards that offer better rewards. Definitely worth the effort though!

  • @mrc6182
    @mrc6182 2 года назад

    REALLY misleading! Capitol One Venture X has an annual fee of $395. Add that to your "low fare." Then, in order to get the "bonus," one must charge $1,333 to the card each month within the first three months of acquiring the card. Can't pay that off each month? Add interest. As for American Airlines Citi Advantage Platinum Select, the $99 annual fee is waived for the first year, but one must spend $833 per month for the first three months to get 50,000 miles. AND, of course, if you don't have a significant income and a credit score above 700, don't bother applying.
    Your $5 flight is hardly a bargain.

    • @druiz012
      @druiz012 2 года назад +1

      He did say in the beginning that when he gets a new card he puts money he was going to spend anyways towards it. Credit Cards aren't for everyone. My wife and I just discovered this though and I find it very helpful. We have had credit cards for years. Have high spend on those cards... $3000 per month between the 2 of us. Pay it off every month 100% have 800 credit scores and never got a single point out of it. We travel 2 times a year. We just got a Capitol one venture X card.. yes there's a $395 annual fee... but we already book a trip through the portal and got a $300 travel credit. So effectively a $95 travel credit. Our next trip to 5 round trips to Boston can be fully paid by the 75k point bonus through Turkish Smiles rewards at 7500 points each way on United. That makes the $95 effective annual fee pretty damn cheap if you ask me.

    • @ProjectUntethered
      @ProjectUntethered  2 года назад

      Yeah, definitely not for everyone. Like David mentioned, the Venture X gives you a $300 travel credit and 10,000 bonus points ($100+) every year. If you use them, that covers the annual fee. That means the lounge access and other benefits is essentially a free cherry on top. And the first year is even better, the sign up bonus alone at the time of this video s worth pretty much double the annual fee. Another thing I forgot to mention if you’re interested in American Airlines miles and don’t want to do the minimum spend thing - Barclays actually has a card where you just have to make ONE purchase (could be just a coffee) in order to get the miles. To me, that’s a pretty epic bargain. Certainly better than paying for full priced tickets, sitting on the floor, and paying for pricey airport food when you wait at the airport 😉
