I grow tired of paint prep work, but spraying color is one of the miracle moments of restoration. It’s detailed but skilled and enjoyable work, and one of the huge milestones of a machine’s return. To me, the only other step that comes close is the first engine startup. Nice job.
The paint looks really good. You & your dad are going to have that ol' Farmall M looking so sharp, you're not going to want to take it out of the barn for fear of scratching it. LOL Stay safe.
Great paint, All through the painting of this tractor I kept watching the safety features that are used now, In the late 50's to the early 70's our high school's teacher who did the FFA, wood, metal shop and agriculture classes. Not using any protective gear from all the paint, varnish and stains all that from the students projects over the years this WW2 combat Marine did not fair too well in his latter years. So many of his students owe him so much for all he freely gave to us, so yes use the protection gear you will never be sorry you won't have to be sorry.
I think that went on in many places as well--- as far as protective equipment. That was certainly the case in the shop i worked at--- not in the paint room though. All that changed as government stepped in with more regulations (Canada) and our employer became much more safety conscious as well. Same for the welder's in our shop where all wore filtered air helmets later on. Early on i did some welding and air arcing (as a mechanic). Well still did some welding but..... Nowhere near the amount the "real" welders did of course BUT we were still exposed to a lot of the fumes created on the shop floor. Later welders had "smoke eaters" on the shop floor for the rest of us. I know one of our senior welder's was getting some kind of blood work related to the fumes he had been exposed to throughout his career. There was a welding area that had a pretty sophisticated air system by the time i left but still a lot of welding on shop floor for the railroad maintenance equipment we repaired.
That was still a thing when we got a guy in to paint d10T dozers after we would rebuild them in 2016 He had his own business mobile painting but our company made him wear a mask Come back when he's almost finished to open up the doors Dudes wearing the standard paint mask with 2 filters But he's pulled one filter off so he can have a smoke hanging out while painting 🤦♂️
Lmao!!! I’ve been painting cars and trucks and the like for 38 years, you made a good choice not wanting to paint!! It’s the last step in the process, but the first thing the customers see!!! Nice job!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
I didn't really enjoy the super m content at the beginning, but now I'm getting to like it and you guys did a wonderful job painting it... i can't wait to see it together
Looks good! I paint business and private aircraft at work. We use the red scotch brite pads to scuff the base coat before applying stripe colors. We also use fresh air or breathable air with almost the same hoods. We do a complete airplane in 2 weeks from start to finish. I would rather paint a tractor lol. Love your videos and the content.
Just looked on google images for farmall super m, they are beauties, I'm guessing yours is the row crop type, they have such character! Shout out from the Fens in the UK where we grow nowt but wheat barley and taters - oh yeah and sugarbeet, buh! :) Looking forward to seeing the finish, great to see the progress, thank you! BTW in a place called holbeach up the road from me there is a roadside display of old mainly masseys and jd's near a transport cafe on A 17 road, they are so well looked after and pleasing to see.
Nice-I used to paint a lot of marine engines and marine engine parts for yachts that had to be white and gleaming using two party poly urethane paint, you wore a respirator with that stuff! Also, the technique painting parts and such is totally different than say painting big panels on a car or such, or working with a metallic base/clear auto paint which if the base coat is not even the metallic looks like a bowling ball swirl if you aren't good! I own a Ford 8N that was gifted to me, dad bought it from a local "tractor flipper" and everyone thinks that tractor is SO NICE but talk about a ten footer- they did little or no bodywork, used the cheap tractor paint, and last year I hosed the tractor off and just that took paint peeling off the engine block...
Painting is why I bought a cheap sea container at auction and turned it into a paint booth complete with an overhead hoist trolley. It's a lot easier time, if you don't have to move everything three times.
@@maggs131 The one I got had the floor chewed up in it, and some pin holes in the roof , paid $250 for it and paid a buddy $100 for dragging it home on his trailer. I screwed some 3/4 ply over the floor and some surplus corrugated roof metal on top. I didn't cut in an exhaust fan. When I paint, the back door is open and I just roll a shop fan in front of it, so it's exhausting air and over spray out the bottom and fresh air is being pulled in from the top. I got a similar air supplied hood as what Squatch uses, so breathing air is no issue.
@@ShainAndrews I've done a couple tractor back sections in it. I roll mine up on the flywheel housing end for painting. Much easier than laying under one to get the bottom. With them stood up, they are only 2 maybe 3 feet wide and the container is nearly 8 feet, so it's not really an issue. Even if a part or two were too big, it still pays off because all the multitude of little parts can be hung up or put on racks and not have to be moved again.
You may hate painting due to all the prep work but, in the end, if done correctly, you'll be pleased with the outcome. Looking good so far. This is how you "get it done", might be slow work but, it's work in progress per say. Great video, cheers :)
Anyone else remember when the m first when in the shop and it was just going to be a quick engine rebuild? Here we are repainting the whole tractor. Good video guys i have enjoyed this project from day one
I dont really hate the paint stage of a build, sure its not the most fun part but the way I like to look at it it is the last of the dirty work and when completed the pile of nice clean & shiny parts really shows you are on the home stretch.
You mentioned everything else is minor. What about parts like the hood, seat, tire rims, etc. Did I miss something? Just enjoying watching someone that is interested in doing it right👍And knows how to do it right. Fantastic work guys!!!
She's going to be too pretty not to name. With as much time and love as you are putting into her, you have to give her a pretty name. I called our old M Emma because she was a sweet running tractor.
I think that M is going to look better than it did coming off the assembly line. The oil filter can has more paint on it than it did! For some reason they never they never got yhe back side of it in the factory. Loking great 😊😊👍👍👍👍👍🍵🍵🍵🍵
You're putting an almost show quality paint job on it. Nothing like what it came out of the factory with. It was red enamel shot quickly and and heavily. I bet there isn't a run or a drip (in the paint) on it! Keep up the good work. BTW that HWY 23 detour sucks!

I could not help notice that Senior was wicked fussy about the paint formula. All of the tractors that I painted were enamel paint. Are you using enamel paint or lacquer? I was never that precise. By a slow reducer I mean a slow dry,, good for large areas and if the weather is hot, you don't have to rush
There’s a great deal to admire in the relationship between father and son on display here. Not least of which is the workmanship both practice.
The second hardest thing about painting, is waiting for the paint to dry before you start reassembling everything. Patience! 😉
