Dan, this song is one of the most beautiful songs in my lifetime. Thank you for your music. Glad to see that you are still active and have a new album!
I have just said the same thing in the fb music group in which I have just posted it. It’s not in my nature to favour the majority, but in this instance I do. It was my favourite song for the longest time, and I still think this song and the old classic ‘You’ll Never Know’ are two of the most beautiful songs of all time. And Dan, it’s not just the song, but the way you sing it. It’s the emotion in your voice. Last night we went to see Harry Connick Jnr. Did he have perfect pitch, probably not. Did he connect with the audience and make us feel what he was singing about? You bet he did. These are qualities which are sadly missing in many younger artists nowadays.
This song has been covered by so many famous singers that the original singer/songwriter Dan Hill's version gets lost. I've listened to many of the covers, but none of the covers is as good as Dan Hill's.
I was in 3rd grade when this song came out. At the time, my older brother kept getting in trouble in school so my parents sent him away out of the country to a Jesuit all boys school. This was the 1st song that ever made me cry. I missed him that year. Today his behavior would be diagnosed as ADD. Thanks Dan for bringing back those memories & tears.
Heard this song played on the radio many times between 1994-1995 after the official music video of 1994 breathed new life into the song. My girlfriend and I at the time, cried while this song was playing and I didn't think I'd ever cry to a love song. When you're in love with someone, lyrics from songs like this have new meaning. Beautiful emotional song, thank you for writing and singing such beautiful lyrics.
The tumultuous tenderness of this song made a deep impression on gradeschool me, and I still admire it at age 53. The image of the hesitant prizefighter!
One of my favorite songs of all times. So glad to see you and Mr. Andy Kim in your, In Story and In Song Tour. What a treat to hear you sing this iconic song in person. I sing it over and over again. It speaks to me and it does sooth the soul. Thank you so much for your music.
I have discovered recently several songs from 70s 80s and this is one I actually had listened to before, just hadn't heard for long time. It is in my top 5 and the subject matter holds so much meaning to me. Thank you, Dan.❤😢😊
I hadn't heard this for a long time, until someone posted it on a music growp I follow. And as I remembered the brilliance it in my heart, memories came flooding in. Beautiful! Thank you Mr.Dan Hill ! 🥰
I’m a guy & I kinda live for songs like this one because I’ve had some of my own moods like this from time to time. I’m surprised I haven’t shed a tear. Yet.
My friend Rob and I play a game called Song For The Day. On Sundays it's a bit tougher because it's always Sad Song Sundays. This was his choice for today. So, thank you! I've heard it before of course, but it's been a minute.
Such a beautiful album Dan Hill. I bought this album with me from NZ to Australia in 1979, & subsequently bought a JVC stereo to do the album justice. Here we are in 2022, I have just had the stereo serviced and this album is just as beautiful as when I first played it, thank you so much.
Everytime i hear this song i definitely end up shedding tears. I sung this song for my ex-wife back when we just got married. The lyrics literally translates what i felt for her and i do still feel the same till today. But apart from that this song gave me so much inspiration in composing a song. Until today i wish i could come up with something as beautiful... I truly admire your works since i was a small boy... I become a singer because experts like you. I have been singer in Malaysia for almost 20 years now. I always wanted make an r&b rendition of this masterpiece because that's my genre. Thank you so much for writing this song sir! You're such an inspiration to me. May God bless you with health, wealth, longevity, happiness, wisdom and success...
LOL LOL, have to laugh when I read comments like this!! It's beautiful music and a beautiful song, but you sang a song to your NEW WIFE which was saying you couldn't tell her that you LOVED HER!!! LOL So many times people don't really listen to words and understand the MEANING of a song before singing them at weddings, funerals, or to someone they love. "Sometimes when we touch the honesty's too much...", you probably thought that was saying the honesty of how much he LOVED HER, but it's the OPPOSITE! Listen to the words. He is torn with his feelings about her, but DOES NOT TRULY FULLY LOVE HER, and THAT is the honesty he is faced with "when they touch"!!! IS that the message you are wanting to share with your wife????? LOL LOL Does this literallly "TRANSLATE WHAT YOU FELT FOR HER AND STILL DO" ??????? Haaahaaaahaaaa She probably would have CRIED and LEFT YOU if she understood what you were actually saying to her. LOL LOL He has feelings of PASSION for this woman, Has times he wants to hold her till he dies, but DOES NOT LOVE HER!!!!
At the time - 1977- this was one of those AM chart toppers that EVERYBODY listened to and then later, many hypocritically disavowed (for a complex of reasons, including that there was something suspect about Canadian musical artists scoring mainstream hits)...But Mr. Hill's raw ballad may have presented to the fickle populace a mirror of 'ye doth protest too much' - ie: the song is EXACTLY within a particular zeitgeist (traces of which carry on into the present): that particular mid- to late-70's predilection for 'honesty' - determined in part by the sexual revolution and the distrust in institutions (the Nixon era being a notable exemplar) - but an honesty so intense that despite our will to live by it we were/are not yet evolved to live WITH it. The song was about the terrific difficulty of vulnerability, and in the cynical, nihilistic 70s, such naked sincerity, though the wish of the culture, seemed unsustainable, sentimental, even decadent (note the flagrant, romantic hedonism of most disco); its no surprise a simultaneous 'reversal' was occurring: the smirking insolence of the Ramones, the quasi-political test of British punk, and, most acutely, the mainstreaming of 'New Wave', with its ironic symbiosis with the technological, the industrial and the simulated. Now, nearly two generations on, Hill's song reveals what it was: good song writing in an 'age' of good song writing. One fears we shall ne'er know the like of that again.
Dan, This was one the first songs that let me know that love isn't always just like movies. It's one of my go-tos when my marriage of 27 years feels less than perfect.
The Honesty Always gets me. Like Olivia Newton John's 'I honestly love you' You, or I Can, FEEL the emotion. In the 90's, you warmed parts I'm not allowed to post here...😆
Heard this song at work today, and it took me back to my childhood, and as a kid every time I heard this song it made me cry, so you can the emotions I had when I heard it today. And I swear I heard this song in a movie, but I cannot remember which movie!
ALWAYS When We TOUCH Our Loved Ones That's So Romantic! That's The Best Time you Spend with your Loved One It's so nice when you Spend Great Time Together Loving Eachother LOVE IS ALL AROUND US and You Can FEEL That LOVE Every DAY and NIGHT As Long As That you're Always With them loving each other forever and are getting along Staying Together Forever. Good Love Song. ❤️ 👍🙂🎶🎵
Superb, Dan. 1977 was the high-water mark and you delivered. What was it like going up against the Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac, and all those zillion-sellers? And did the lyrics happen first, or the music?
Dan Hill wrote the lyrics of this song in 1973 when he hoped to win the full affection of a polyamorous woman named Moira. She decided to run off with a CFL football player, but later, Moira resurfaced and, according to Hill, wanted to pursue a serious relationship. . Dan Hill did not want to get hurt again. Would love to learn more about Moira, perhaps find a picture of her.
EXACTLY!!!! Thank for being the ONE OTHER PERSON on her who apparrently LISTENS TO WORDS!!! Everyone sings to their sweethearts, plays it at weddings etc, and they are singing a song that says they cannot tell their partner THEY LOVE THEM!!! LOL It is a song of mixed emotions, he has great passion, but she left him once and then years later came back and wanted a serious relationship, and he is feeling hesitant about letting her in, does not know if he can feel REAL LOVE for her again/anymore, etc. People that cry over this and say the words express exactly how they feel about someone they love DON'T UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF THE SONG! They hear the beautiful MUSIC, and the passion and beauty of a couple lines is all they hear and absorb and foolishly use it as their ANTHEM song, LOL.
Dan, this song is one of the most beautiful songs in my lifetime. Thank you for your music. Glad to see that you are still active and have a new album!
Thank you for your kind words.

I'm a guy, and this brings tears to my eyes. I loved it since I was a teen.
Same here brother. Loved it since it first came out and still love it today

I think I only Dan Hill's and maybe Rod Stewart's version. For this song, no one can bring the same essence as the original artist.
am a chinese, seldom hear a western song that's so honest and pure deeply emotional. the lyric is very connected to the expression of thought .
Dan This Song Should Have Gotten A Grammy. This Song Is So Timeless. Makes Me Feel Great. What A Classic Hit.

Than mislead you with a lie
Bittersweet? Love it, anyway.
