The Angel prelude track is Mariah literally making sobbing sounds and crying sounds, except in whistle register and harmonizing them. Essentially it’s the sound of an angel crying. She converts her emotional pain into beautiful music!
MEMOIRS (2009) is the last album from Mariah Carey to go platinum in the US and multi-platinum worldwide. Obsessed was her last top 10 hit while #beautiful was her last top 20 hit. The Dream and Tricky Stewart produced the album and because of it, I agree, some of the songs start to blend together. Parallels to the Charmbracelet era were made because of Mariah's lyricism, strong whistles, and good vocal condition during the tour. TRACK comments: It's a Wrap is my absolute favorite track on the album. Love the throwback sound, the hilarious lyrics, and her voice. Did you hear the piercing background whistles throughout the song? 57:49 A breath of fresh air, yes, it should've been a single. Up Out My Face cracks me up. The music video has Nicki Minaj and was released for free on iTunes. It's jokingly referred to as a commercial for Target because of the red and white color scheme. 44:52 Angel (The Prelude) slayed me when I first heard it. A song of only whistles?! She is a BEAST for giving the fans exactly what we needed. I would've been shocked if a Brazilian didn't know her cover of IWTKWLI. Yes, the music video is garbage. She slayed the legendary whistles for each of her live tv performances. CHANTEUSE prep: Memoirs was criticized for not having a diverse sound. Looking back, it is arguably why Mariah swung in the other direction and took a maximalist approach to The Elusive Chanteuse (2013). If Memoirs was too serialized in sound, Chanteuse would be considered very episodic. Each track sounds discrete from the ones around it. While her previous two studio albums followed music trends, Chanteuse, bucked the popular EDM sound of the time. As a result of label issues (it was her last with Def Jam) and the album's wide ranging sound, Chanteuse suffered from poor marketing and flopped hard despite having a multiplatinum single. Mariah's divorce album was arguably her most interesting since TEOM and the most sonically playful album of her career. Mariah gives the album her all vocally showcasing 5.4 octaves. The most of any album in her discography. I walked away liking 14/20 songs. Do NOT forget to listen to The Art of Letting Go. It's her divorce track and was the working title for the album. RARITIES prep: 59:19 Disc 1 is a collection of songs not included on her studio albums. Two songs from Music Box were available on international versions and one from Daydream was a B-side on ABMB. Along with Disc 1, you should listen to Bring It On Home (2012, Obama election campaign song), Almost Home (2013, Disney soundtrack song), and 100% (2009, originally for Precious). You wouldn't know about those songs as they were released between album projects. Disc 2 should be its own video as it is technically the audio from her legendary Daydream Tour's Tokyo Dome concert.
I still can't believe nobody paid attention to Caution. “A No No” was slept on HARD. Should've been a hit and I think it could've if she had done the Lil' Kim + Cardi B remix that people were craving (me included) back then. She chose Stefflon Don, who's great, but doesn't have the same commercial appeal as Cardi did.
@@vicentereacts1304 After five albums and overall mixed results with Def Jam, Mariah returned to Sony for her 15th studio album, Caution (2018). Despite it being her most vocally conservative album only showcasing three octaves, Caution was a critical success and seen as a return to creative form for Mariah. Praised for its brevity at only 11 tracks long, it was her shortest studio album since Daydream (1995) and her first album not to feature a cover song since her 1990 debut. Gone were the increasingly long and obtuse album titles which had become the formula since TEOM. Instead her use of a thematically tighter and intriguing one word title was back in use. The production was not overstuffed and sounded cohesive, but not too samey or minimalistic. Just enough producers were employed for a sound that was equally nostalgic and current. Her pen game remained as strong as ever. Commercially in terms of pure sales, the album flopped hard. It debuted in the top 5 and failed to reach silver certification. So what was the problem? Labels don’t invest in legacy (i.e-older) artists the way they do for younger artists and there were some missed opportunities with singles which were a bit uninspired. A whopping five songs were made available pre-release, but after the first two poorly chosen singles flopped, there was little momentum to be found. Caution or A No No should’ve been lead singles while GTFO and With You should’ve been album tracks. An album standout, RUNWAY, samples her ballad Butterfly and should’ve been a single, but was only available in Japan. It was officially included on the standard version in 2022. The three music videos were polished but lackluster. Mariah didn’t even really try for A No No. Only one outfit and one set?! She’s had more costume changes on talk shows. Sadly, the whistles from the music video were not included on the album version.
@@got2bjosh Caution showcases 4 octaves F2 (in "Giving Me Life") to E5 (in "Runway") to F#7! (In "8th Grade") Oh wait... Well, on tour she reached C8 at the end of "Emotions" more than once
The reason you don’t see Nicki Minaj in the album is cause she was never on the original project. Mariah was to release a year later a double-disc album called “Angels Advocate” remixing many of the “Memoirs” songs into hip hop remixes with featured artists and dance remixes. The project was then shelved after “Memoirs” had performed poorly. The only two songs that came out from this project was the “Up Out My Face” with Nicki Minaj and “Angels Cry” with Ne-Yo. These two songs were released before the decision to shelve the remix album. They were not even promoted. She moved on and started recording her second Christmas album that was then released later that year. And yes, “Memoirs” is a concept album. It’s not the traditional Mariah album she usually puts out there. Definitely an acquired taste and many feel the way you do about it. I personally enjoy the concept and the song, but that’s just me 😁
