00:00 Gurkha Trousers & Shorts Introduction
Gurkha trousers quickly become a favorite at events like Pitti Uomo, and they’re often seen on various menswear influencers. While this trouser might have a particularly strong interest in European countries, its reach is now worldwide.
01:14 What are Gurkha Trousers and Gurkha Shorts?
They're defined by having pleats. You’ll see Gurkha trousers with a strong double pleat. Whether that’s inward or outward facing, it doesn’t really matter but, sometimes, you’ll find ones with a single pleat. You can also find them in a less common appearance - also known as the “kissing pleat.”
Just above the pleats, you will see a single or a double extended waistband, which can be used to tighten or loosen the trouser. This is typically done with a buckle, but you can also find them in button varieties as well or they might even use side adjusters.
Gurkha shorts are about the same as Gurkha trousers. The only difference is they’re shorts and not pants.
03:38 History of Gurkha Trousers
Like many things in menswear, Gurkha trousers have a military origin. These treasures were based off of the trousers that were part of the military uniform in the Nepalese military, found in the Kingdom of Gurkha, in the early 1800s.
06:04 Are Gurkha Pants Formal or Casual?
It depends, but they can be made more formal depending on the fabric that they’re made from. For example, Gurkha is made of silk, linen, cotton; it really brings out a more casual summertime feel. If you choose a pair of Gurkhas in a very thick and heavy flannel, it might really dress it up and also, the fabric properties and the weight of the fabric can really lend itself to a sharp crease, which could also lean more formal.
06:48 Wearing: → As separate trousers
07:20 → With a shorter jacket
07:46 → With breezy shirts
08:17 → With boots
08:35 → With sneakers
09:15 → With patterns
09:27 → With dress shoes
Because the waistband detail has so much going on, they don’t really look good underneath a suit jacket.
09:49 Gurkha Trouser Tips
Given the pleats and the busy waistband, it’s probably best to pick a plain material. Avoid oversized window panes or bold check patterns. Gurkha trousers can be quite tricky to get right and, you know, here at GG, we’re all about a good fit.
11:07 So, Timeless or Trend?
We will call a pair of Gurkha trousers a timeless piece. They have a rich history that goes back, and the design is still the same today. Even if it seems like they’re trending right now, the reality is it’s just a resurgence in popularity. It’s not a new thing.

12:12 Outfit Rundown - Хобби
It is worth considering the world outside our classic menswear bubble: out there, it certainly is not a trend. Within the tailored menswear sphere, it's a nice little homage to vintage styles which happens to be experiencing a little resurgence, and I think it is totally cool.
Yeah, I've never seen anyone wearing these other than myself. Maybe in a few years I will change my mind, but Gurkhas are stylish, comfortable, and versatile, to the point I just don't really want to wear anything else. It's my perfect "normal" pant.
@@ggill1313They’re also definitely normal "enough" that they don’t look over the top, especially those with buttons. Also, if you’re confident enough, you’ll be able to pull off (almost) any outfit.
PLEATS ARE BACK, BABY!
You guys made this video at the most perfect time! I just recently stumbled across the Gurkha style and I fell in love with it immediately. I've never invested more than $200 in an item before, but I'm committed to one day get a high quality, custom made pair of these guys for myself.
If you buy a pair of bespoke trousers I warn you - you can never wear off the rack trousers again. You dont realise how uncomfortable your trousers ARE, cos its normal to you. Honestly, the difference is night and day.
If I may: NEVER by anything from craftsman clothing (some of their pictures were shown in the video). They are a scam and a lot of people including me never got their order, just quickly check their IG if you don‘t believe me. If you‘re willing to spend 200$ I can highly recommend Corrado Trousers which are made to measure. pants with various styles including a Ghurka variant. They‘re a company based in Napoli and I recently got my first but definitely not last pair from them.
@@piccalillipit9211 Yeah I'm excited for the comfort factor for sure, but a little more nervous for potentially screwing up the fit lol. For gurkhas, what brand do you recommend the most? I've heard plenty of wonderful things about Collaro
@@connor.chan.jazzman - I honestly don't know brands - sorry. I make bespoke historical suits as a semi-professional hobby so I make all my own clothes. BUT... It is honestly not as expensive as you might think to get a pair made at a local tailor / seamstress. Including fabric for a simple style like gurkhas that dont really need a "fitting and rip down" in a plain fabric, you are probably looking at $200 to $300 at a local tailor.
The benefit is they will last you 20 years, they will have enough "inlay" in them that you can let them out by up to 4" on the waist and 2" on the thigh. Ask for an offcut to keep in case you need to patch them. Properly made clothing lasts almost for ever. I have jackets older than me and In 52...
@piccalillipit9211 Thanks for the helpful reply! Also I find your profession super interesting and cool. How is it making your own clothes? Is it something that is difficult to get into? How does your own clothes compare to the clothes made by other tailors?
Here's a interesting fact a Gurkha soldier fought bravely off several Japanese soldiers killing several of them before dying himself. I forget his name but he almost fought off entire regiment of those soldiers.
There are so many tales of Gurkhas being absolute units - like in the Korean war (maybe at the battle of Imjin?) where a Gurkha bludgeoned several Chinese soldiers to death in defence of an artillery position using just a tripod. Or, in Afghanistan where one bloke repulsed a Taliban attack on his sentry post single handed by flinging claymore mines at them.
Truly legendary little fellas - and very kind/polite in civilian life too
And today many Gurkha work security on cruise ships
@Strangely Brown Dang Skippy, and if I remember he said something to the effect of come and get it. And they sure did 😢 he was a hero among heroes
I have a pair of Imperial Japanese Army shorts. They are just like Gurkha shorts but the waist is tied with webbing tape instead of the buckles. It's very comfortable.
Are they genuine?
I'm glad to hear a local brand from Singapore being mentioned here. I often tailor my pants from Yeossal and their quality are superb for quite a good reasonable price range.
Im so happy you guys made video on gurkha trouser I’m from Nepal been watching you guys for long time learned lot, love that you guys showed the history of it and everything about it feeling really proud ☺️🇳🇵
I feel like my prayers have been answered. I hate how mens trousers have been taken over by low waisted skinny pants. Its uncomfortable and makes me look like a sausage. I love this trend!!
So true. I am so glad the aforementioned sartorial atrocity is slowly but steadily disappearing from men's legs where they had no business being to start with.
@@alexanderfo3886 The curse of Farah.... not that they're alone; useful only for displaying young men's crotches, if that's anyone's idea of fun. Low-waist trousers, leggings, meggings, skinny jeans - I know what all that's about: peacock display, but nowhere near as attractive. Take them, and too=short jackets, double lapel button-holes (i.e. one atop the other: why?), above knee-length overcoats, and send the lot to landfill.
@@RobertJonesWightpaint Even as someone who is attracted to men, I must say this displaying is not even the slightest attractive. A well-built body will reveal itself anyway, and even better when not put into sausage casings. But I am positive with regards to the future.
I have the hardest time finding trousers that fit me. I'm an older guy, I have big quads and a 36inch waist and I'm tall and most trousers are skinny and short.
They’re so versatile and elegant. A staple for me. I love my wine gurkha trousers.
I’m so glad you did this video. I have been seeing more Ghurka trousers lately and they look very comfortable for a climate such as South FL where I am at. Maybe have to check those brands that you recommend!
Since I tailor my own clothing, it's nice when the pants are too long and a little bit too wide but they fit the glutes and the quads perfectly to where I can take some of the fabric from the leg and make side adjusters for the hips
Scavini also offers Ghurka Trousers, and other fine quality trousers. I highly recommend a visit.
Polo Ralph Lauren Gurkha trousers are always classic and thus never out of style.
I bought some Gurkha shorts about a year ago and love them for my summer looks.
Glad to see nathan back 🙌
I've been waiting for this one for years!
Those pants remind me of the woodland camo pants we wore back in the Army. Those pants had the adjusters on the waist. They also had belt loops for our belts.
Basically those are similar to BDU without side pockets. And as long as they're 100 % cotton rip-stop, they make good summer pants indeed.
I have one in grey flannel.
It's super comfortable and versatile.i always wore it when the weather allows it here in indonesia.
Ha, just had to check my closet and behold--there it was, my pair of Gurkhas I bought back in 2011 in HK. They still fit, and summer is coming. Thanks for the reminder.
Happy to help! 😄
Had a pair 35 years ago when I was thinner. They were comfortable and I really enjoyed them.
Can you tell me the fabric used in it
100% cotton for the pair from 35 years ago. Bought them from Banana Republic. They no longer sell them.
Gurkha trousers… had never heard of them! Really interesting thanks for posting.
Glad to hear you enjoyed!
Personally, I love them! They're very attractive as casual or dressier men's trousers. Quite sexy looking!
As a woman, these also appeal to me because when you get a little older and your weight fluctuates, I love the idea of being able to adjust the waist for a more comfortable fit. Any brands that make Gurkha trousers for women that don't cost an arm and a leg? I will research this too. I want at least one pair.
Thank you for this video gentlemen!
Definitely CLASSIC!
Lisa
Really appreciate this video. Thank you to Gentleman's Gazette for alerting me to Gurkha trousers.
I've never heard of them before this video, but I do like them.
Great video. I was just debating whether to get some Ghurka shorts from Uniqlo’s spring line so maybe I’ll actually pull the trigger on them
High waisted trousers make us short guys look a little taller. Gurkhas look good on me. I tuck anything I wear into them, including sweaters.
I have very long legs and a short torso so very high waisted pants like Gurkha trousers fit very awkwardly on me. I’m getting a pair of Alex Mill pleated chinos, though, which is visually similar and fits my waist better
Pini Parma is another good source for Gurkha trousers. Great vid
Great addition, thank you!
I have two pairs of ghurka shorts but figuring out how to put them on is a challenge. Now that I've seen your version, I will try again.
I have a pair from Ralph Lauren in navy and in brown. I'm glad you think they're timeless, so do I. I might try a pair from Pini Parma too, they make some nice looking ones. I wear mine with a sports jacket and tie or a suede jacket.
Express for Men has a very affordable Gurkha pant right now on final clearance. Available in three color options. Great material with some stretch. The waist runs 1-2” large. I typically get a 33 or 34 and the 32 was perfect. Of course by nature the Gurkha belt makes for easy adjustments. I added the black and olive in the final sale having picked up the khaki on regular sale.
basically pleated trousers with a built in belt
Love Ghurka style .I have a pair of Banana Republic shorts in Ghurka style , next a pair of long Ghurka pants from them !!
Was just looking at some at Luxire
another good casual look are the australian army drill trousers which you may have seen on the old magnum p i
the old sgt maj Higgins wore them a lot
beneventostore has cotton drill and flannel gurkhas, ordered very happy with that
My favourite pants! I have short legs, so the high waist it help. Bo Guillaume wear them.
Where did you find Gurkha trousers? Over thirty years ago I found out about the Gurkha Troops and their trouser uniform. I found a pair of shorts that I wore until they were worn. I had totally forgotten about them until your video. The Burkha soldier is an amazing fighter.
Fascinating.
I started wearing them in 2019
Hmm, very interesting! My approach to casual-wear is classic prep, but sometimes the occasion demands something a tad more… masculine? I’ve been thinking about a safari jacket over a henley, with nice leather boots - all that was missing was the right kind of trouser…
Haha, asked about this video not that long ago.
Finally a video aout gurkhas
Always happy to help! 🙌
I love to see a video on what to wear to Jury Duty
Camouflage and a he did it T-shirt.
Awesome topic! They're timeless and versatile. Thanks GG.( P.S. can you guys do a style rundown on Paul Newman?)
Other ones that would be good would be David Bowie as there is an exhibition on at the V&A - also Tommy Nutter who was the tailor to the Beatles and many other bands
You'll be pleased to learn that we've previously written an article on Mr. Newman--let us know if you'd like to see it made into a video! - Preston
www.gentlemansgazette.com/paul-newman-gentleman-style/?
@@gentlemansgazette Hi Preston - can you do one on Tommy Nutter, please?
@@gentlemansgazette Fantastic article, I think it would be great to see you guys make a style rundown video on Paul Newman. There aren’t really any in-depth rundowns in video format on RUclips,so who better to do one than GG?
I didn't know that the trousers that my parents tailors on regularly basis had such history.
Had a pair of surplus Gurkha shorts in high school. Worn till they fell apart.
Fifty years ago there was a comedy on the BBC called "Some Like it Hot", set in war time Asia. They were a concert entertainment party, and a lead character was a small round man, obviously nicknamed "Lofty". He wore these shorts, and not knowing what the proper name was we called them "Lofty shorts". A bunch of my friends used to wear them and I remember how comfortable the shorts were.
I’ve seen these in the J Peterman catalog for years.
They look rather too tapered to meet my exacting preferences - I like a lot of room. However, no doubt there are variations. What I do like is the high waistband - i.e. the actual waistband, not a hip-band; I hate trousers that are cut to sit on the hips - if you had arthritic hips, you'd know why. I can see these working with a simple blazer; increasingly, my first requirement is comfort - but not the sort of comfort which means you have to buy trousers that fit like pyjama bottoms, made out of polyester with a draw-string waist: not until I have to go into an old people's home, and if I can still fight, not even then.
I'd probably go with shorts because I like the length (near the top of my knee) like my cargo shorts I used to wear.
Where can I buy Gurkha grouses in store in Manchester, Uk ? Can someone please tell me!!
Anyone have craftsman clothing gurkhas. Is it best to size down or go true to size?
hi guys 😊I am in year 11 and my prom is coming up I just watched your wedding attire video and was wondering if you could do a vid on prom attire or at least party attire
We've got something in the works for you - stay tuned! 😉
Hmmm... I don't know, I think that having a short torso it won't look good on me. Maybe I'll give it a try if I can find them in any shop.
Oh, I just got to the socks part, and I noticed that a thick pair of socks is what the presenter wears. I’ve always been baffled by this American trend of wearing thickish socks even in hot summer weather. It is very hard to find moderately thick socks for spring and fall in the US. Why is that? Is it just the cushioning? Anyway, enjoy these riveting professionally made sartorial videos. The tall guy from Minnesotan looks actually a bit like my cousin.
That coat at 1:31 is fire
Are there good quality gurkhas for arround 100€?
No Higgins Pictures or clips?
What show is that from?
*TOMMY NUTTER* please do a video on his amazing work [he was the tailor to the Beatles, Mick Jagger, Bowie and many others]
Yes, review on Tommy Nutter and Edward Sexton will be very exciting .
@@leorexsangma8501 YES Sexton as well would be great...!!!
What make are those boots?
Luxire
only problem: many popular/good brands dont sell them... yet
I own several pairs - all from Luxire
I have seen those at banana republic
The problem is that I can barely find them off- the-rack in department store
Can I wear with a Hanley shirt?
A Hanley shirt will play to the Gurkha trouser's more utilitarian strengths
I love Gurkha Trousers, especially for men with big thigh
Can I wear this with saddle shoes ?
A classic pairing indeed!

do a video on leather trenchoats!
And how awful they are!?
@@schylerlewis8467 speak for yourself, awful on YOU
Yeah, my Dad wore them back in the day. I never considered my Dad fashionable ... he wasn't, the Army made him do it.
Military trousers quite often have the fastenings offset so they do not interfere with the buckle of the military belt.
'One of the most elite training programs in the world'; Britain is the only country that has successfully fought off a Communist insurgency in south east asia (Malaya). I'll give you three guesses why ...
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I only see these being made too short, exposing the ankles and bottom of the leg.Can you reccomend a maker that avoids that?
I see the appeal for other men, but for me they’re just a step too far. I like high waisted, pleated pants but I’ll stick with side adjusters.
It sounds like you've landed on a style that works for you, and we'll cheers to that! 🥂
My Nepali wife approves these trousers
Define heat?
I've been wearing Rubinacci Manny trousers for many years.
Women universally despise them!
What isn't discussed is the utter nightmare in the toilet. Then the roll up when sitting.
I only wear them to specific events, classic car shows, yacht club events and polo
Heard of it the first time. As well as of these brands. Sorry, Europe here...
Spending money for good pants is one thing that you'll only regret once.
👍🏽 Buy once, cry once
Erm... some Brits love the heat, and Gurkha Trousers! Although, should they really be called Gorkha Trousers?
Fun fact: "gurka" means cucumber in Swedish 🥒
I fail to understand why these pants aren't good in a suit, but good with a sport coat. If you have the jacket on, it hides all the loud details, and when you take it off, it's a statement piece. Why doesn't it work either way?
Odd jackets and sport coats don't have the same level of formality linked to them; you can take off an odd jacket more readily than a suit jacket, which is typically meant to stay worn. Therefore, an odd jacket gives more opportunity to show off the Gurkha trouser's details.
@@gentlemansgazette ah I see. Learn something new everyday. That’s why I follow you guys!
Not a trend at all. Bought a pair from Tayt Collective last month and the fitment is just so much nicer than other trousers
I see styling the trousers with desert boots, to maintain the military heritage....
More pleating than I like.
Pleats make your thighs look big so unless you are super thin it’s a no go family
Thats not always true- I wont find nice fitting pants without double pleats... people who squat and Deadlift heavy will know the struggle.
And they drape really well- but each their own.
If youve got a more muskular build they are the way to go.
And if youre thin, then the pleats will look even worse sometimes as your upper body is then out of proportion
Actually if the pants fit right the pleats slim down the pants.
The whole idea that pleats make your hips and thigs look big comes from grandpas wearing pants that are too big.
The pleats are folded when standing and expand when sitting down giving more room since that's when your thigs expand.
Once you go pleated, you don't go back.
Would trousers with just the side-tab adjusters be considered Gurkha trousers? What are some good brands for pants with just the side tab adjusters?
Cavour and no.
As there are a few defining features that make a trouser a pair of Gurkhas, side-tab adjusters alone wouldn't be enough for a pair to be called "Gurkhas". That being said, there are many stylish trouser options out there with side adjusters!
Look ah savini dir gurkhas
I for one would not have the courage to tell the Gurkhas that their trousers are merely a trend! Therefore I'll go with them being timeless.
think men needs a bit space in hot climate
Nice, but men do NOT wear shorts in Italy. Ever...
1337
Now I just remember what very tight jeans can do to your fertility.....so a pair of Gurkas can do the trick
I prefer trend so they go away.
But, they look very wrinkly...
Nobody looks good in them.
Trend? I've never seen these atrocities in the wild and I hope that won't happen either.
Some clothing items are meant to stay in history… Im sure that a very woke person will say they are a symbol of imperialism and colonialism🤷🤷🤷🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
