    Why did they ever get rid of the 3-blade prop?! That thing was simply majestic! Once they went to the 4-bladed prop, it seemed like it lost not only a bit of character, but performance as well.

    • @Voodoo1650
      @Voodoo1650  4 года назад +7

      darkjedi74 The 3 blade propeller was very hard on the airframe, the torque from it was huge, plus John Penney said the he could feel it in his feet..... the propeller beat the tail and rudder up pretty hard.

    • @jaarryifleshblood315
      @jaarryifleshblood315 4 года назад +1

      Voodoo1650 was there a slight change in performance?

    • @Voodoo1650
      @Voodoo1650  4 года назад +6

      JaArRyi FleshBlood She was definitely fast with the 3 blade prop, but she was very difficult to handle on the course, at high speeds she felt like she wanted to swap ends due to the huge amount of torque produced by that prop. They figured that with a healthy engine and the four blade propeller, she was just as fast, and way easier to control on the course.

      Voodoo1650 that’s good, does hp and to Toque really matter when it comes to piston racing planes...?

    • @Voodoo1650
      @Voodoo1650  4 года назад +4

      JaArRyi FleshBlood oh, yes!! Even on a small Cessna 172 you feel the torque from the prop and it will pull you off the side of the runway if you’re not countering it with rudder, now amp that up a LOT with 4,000 plus horsepower, and that big heavy prop spinning out front.

    My dad & his crew were the reason the bear got the top qualifying spot for that years race. I remember he spent weeks at the hanger tearing that plane apart, buying parts, & repainting it. Penny could've smoked everyone in the first lap if he would've opened her all the way up but penny being a chicken shit refused to.

      It's a shame so many of the unlimited are not racing.Sure miss Rare Bear,Precious Metal,Sept.Fury,Checkmate and the rest of the cool and fast birds.Are Voodoo and Strega coming back? I'm a newly retired a&p out of Wichita and was hoping to go to Reno when they race again,thanks!

    • @Voodoo1650
      @Voodoo1650  4 года назад +3

      JetTech Don Unfortunately pretty much all the top Unlimiteds are done racing, Strega will not come back unless someone fronts a large amount of money to sponsor her, and Voodoo was retired and donated to the Planes of Fame air museum (they still maintain her in race form, and there’s plans at another world speed record attempt) but she probably will never race at Reno again. You still have Dreadnought that races, and she’s a very fast plane on the course when needed, but these last few years, they haven’t had to really push her too hard. Also Dr. Hisey still races Miss America, and she is pretty fast too, so if you do end up going, you won’t be too disappointed, there’s plenty of warbirds still racing which is fun to see, and the sport class keeps getting faster every year.

      @@Voodoo1650 I'm pretty uneducated on the history of the reno air races, so I'm wandering why all these unlimited racers are being retired? I know a lot of money is involved racing them but is a lack of funding the whole issue or something else? Also, if a lack of funding is the issue, why is it now when it wasn't before? Thanks in advance, love your channel👍

      @@danraymond1253 money and pilots most of the pilots are getting old and there isnt a next generation of well funded racers to pick up the torch.

    Reno is at ground level, but WW2 fighters like the Bearcat were designed to fly their fastest at about 30,000 feet, for dogfighting and to escort bombers. So what top speed would Rare Bear be able to reach at 30,000 feet, a/ if no adjustments were made to its current engine and b/ if it were adjusted to give its best at 30,000 feet?
