Owen Jones in Scotland: Could Jo Swinson actually lose her seat to the SNP?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 май 2024
- This week we travelled to East Dunbartonshire where the Scottish National Party claim they are on the verge of unseating the Lib Dem leader. A majority of 5,339 will be pretty hard to overturn, so are they being over confident? Or will a dip in the polls hurt Jo Swinson at home? And what do the SNP have to offer constituents beyond Independence? I also ask what it says about British politics that we are even talking about two party leaders, Boris Johnson and Jo Swinson, both possibly losing their seats?

This has aged like a fine wine
😂😂😂
I came here hoping this would be the first comment
Well well guess what snp took the seat she's oot
I didn't know Jo Swinson was Scottish till they mentioned it. You'd never tell from her accent.
She sounds Scottish to me, from outside Scotland,
She's from the richest area in glasgow, Milngavie. Her husband got enormous donations from an EU backed ''think tank''
@@mrsmith9031 I,m Scottish and a lot of Scottish people cant stand these people putting on a phony accent, and Swinson is as phony as they come.
@@mrsmith9031 she sounds Scottish to be and I am a Scott. Don't know what part of England the person in the video thought people would sound like that.
Think shes spent too much time in that Westminster bubble.
Mad to see one of these videos with Owen in my own constituency! Prefer Labour but we need to vote SNP to get Jo out.
In my own town
Same man it’s mental! Was hoping to see my mental neighbours shouting at the squirrels again but alas he never visited
its mental labour and tory voters gonna vote lib dems to keep snp out
@Brad Hilton doubt troy voters will switch, hopefully labour supports
@Treble Treble I'm happy your voting snp
The scariest thing about Libdem voters is that they wouldn't vote for a Corbyn led labour government over Johnson which is the opposite to Labour voters who are more willing to tactically vote.
Thomas Middlehurst and visa versa
She has said many times that she won’t put Corbyn or Johnston in number 10
@@bertiewooles3093 Forgotten 2010 to and 2015 have we? Forgotten her advocating for Thatcher statues? Forgot about her accepting money from private health and Fracking. If she thinks she can bully the Conservatives into accepting a new remain leader. She's not been paying attention.
Bertie Wooles lib Dems pride themselves on centrism and centrists as a rule always sway right they never go left she'd put Johnson in without a hesitation
arlo stein 1 conservative coalition in history and 4 Lib/Lab coalitions but yeah they always sway right as a rule 🙄
Jo Swinson is just woeful.
I could be LibDem leader and have collected 40 seats in this elex
Haha a majority of 5000 is hard for the SNP to overturn ignoring the fact in 2015 the SNP overturned majorities going up to 20,000.
Ewan Cuthbertson heres hoping
wood scottish seats are very "swingy" in elections compared to English seats.
Aye, but the Yoons will be voting tactically in this one, like never before.
@@ShaunSayinStuff Actually I don't think they will be I think it'll be like 2015 where yes people tried to vote tactically like in East Renfrewshire but the SNP manage to take it because of divisions over brexit.
Yeh but I think the 2015 vote was people who maybe don't vote often being disappointed with the independence vote, deciding they should get out and vote and that's how SNP got all but 3 seats.
But when Theresa May call her election that motivation had waned and SNP lost seats.
tldr: 20k I think 20k swings are less likely to happen now
but maybe Brexit will motivate those people again
That would be amazing if SNP could pull that off
Kaide Walsh you don't appear to be the sharpest tool in the box to ask why it would be amazing she has a 5000 majority
@@michaelmcginley7930 She appears to be a lot sharper than you ! You only have to go back to 2015 when SNP won the seat with a 2000 majority . So with the Lib-Dems on the back foot and SNP clearly on the front foot , with Lib-Dems mostly relying on Labour and Tory voters to keep SNP out it's hardly a ringing endorsement, is it . Lib-Dems might hold on , but if they do they'll need all Labour and Tory voters to chip in , but more likely it'll be a 2015 repeat!
@@michaelmcginley7930 What was you saying ?
Boy have I got news for you
If you're not bothered about whether Corbyn or Johnson becomes Prime Minister, that by definition means you're also not bothered about Brexit. If Johnson wins, Brexit happens - and hard.
It sort of happened, but not "hard" at all.
Astonishing. That Lib Dem activist could not remember Nicola Sturgeon getting the same treatment as Swinson. Perhaps then, sexism has nothing to do with it, and the fact that Sturgeon took over a Party in government made her confidence more credible?
Im in her constituncy and im voting snp, know a lot of people who are voting snp too
Yes, and you most certainly did!! 😂😂😂
What a Shame
7:32 No she didn't. Because Sturgeon comes across as a competent politician, reasonably sound as they go; and Swinson comes across as a self-important Tory
Jo Swinson is austerity and nukes. No thank you.
I'm not a fan of Sturgeon and her independence views, but she does come across as a lot more amicable than Swinson, while still coming across as strong and articulate.
Good point and I'm a very vocal feminist.
Very magninimous of you, sir ;-)
You seem a good sort, you sure you don't want to come over and join us?
@@chloemcdermott2978 Nothing wrong with being pro-nuclear weapons whatsoever.
Since it's Christmas....
Owen: "We all know Jo Swinson's not going to be Prime Minister"
Lib Dem: *rolls eyes* "We don't know that".
Audience: "OHHHHHHH YES WE DO!"
Even as a Lib Dem voter I laughed at that
What kind of Labour guy prefers the lib dems to the SNP in 2019? Did he fall out of a time machine or something?
I can understand it being close when the SNP enacted austerity within Scotland and the LibDems supporting it nationwide. If remaining in the UK is important to him, I can see why he’d rather vote libdem.
@@chrispeacock1257 maybe in another constituency that makes some sense but Jo Swinson is the face of their anti-Labour turn and a massive Thatcher fan
Stasi Kapetanos If I’m a Scottish Labourite, I’ve spent the last several years seeing the SNP as the main competition.
@@aperson22222 yeah for Scottish Labour seats but there's surely a difference between competition between progressive parties and competition against the Tories and their ilk
@@chrispeacock1257 if anything the SNP have tried to mitigate austerity cuts from WM, by plugging the funding gap for the bedroom tax, and keeping the nursing burasry, for example, so can you please give some examples to support your statement?
This is Scotlands business, not mine, but so many Scottish people want independence, but want to remain in the EU. The EU doesn't allow independence, it is a contradiction. I would like to hear the views of our Scottish neighbours.
Can't blame Scots for wanting to be rid of the tories, wish it were that easy South of the border.
Doesn’t everyone think that the conservatives ignore anybody who isn’t rich and powerful? Not just Scotland.
I have such opposite politics to you but I think you have some of the most moderate and level headed interviews. You’re a down to earth dood Owen
I had no idea Jo Swinson was Scottish. What happened to her voice? My uncle has lived in London for over 20 years and still sounds Scottish
The Scottish cringe happened.
@@fynesider maybe! Haha. I have never understood how somebody can change their accent from living in a certain area. Picking up phrases makes sense but to change your voice is ridiculous
The SNP ousting the Lib Dems would be phenomenal.
@Logan Helsven Scotland is even more anti free speech than the rest of britain
Why would the Scots vote for a Tory Lite austerity princess.
I'm Happy to say I voted SNP and helped get rid of Jo Swinson but I voted for Scottish Independence.
Jo Swinson, more like Jo Swansong
Jo Swinson, more like No Swinson
She lost her seat because of Bowlers. She gave the go ahead to open a new sports complex which didnt have a bowling green which left a bunch of local bowlers very upset. They managed to canvas hundreds of votes which they used against her tactically to get her unseated. Dont mess with the bowlers!
Well bowling is what old people do. And Millengavie is like Jurassic park.
She did lose her seat.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA
The more I've seen of Jo, the less I trust what she represents. The voting record aside, there's a lot of hubris. The leaflets I've received in the post have deliberate factual errors and it is all about Jo.
The biggest factual error, or misleading fact, in my constituency, is a graph showing support for the three parties - in the EU elections. The year was correct, but the fact it was an EU election was left off. The message they keep trying to send is that Labour doesn't stand a chance. The truth is, Labour stand more of chance than the Lib Dems on past voting data.
The issue of trust, therefore, once again pops up.
The impression I get is of a one-person, one-policy party. Sure, that obviously isn't the case, but the impression is there.
There is nothing profound in terms of the changes we need. The policies seem somehow 'second hand', borrowed. My gut feeling is that Jo is in this more for herself than for the people. It's a gut feeling and it could be wide of the mark. The problem for Jo is, there are a lot of people who get these impressions. It's all in the body language, in the marketing - Jo, Jo, Jo, Jo. She is thrust front and centre, the rest of the party and the policies seem to be secondary, which is entirely the wrong way around.
Sure, Labour and the Tories are putting their leaders to the fore - obviously - but there's also a lot of other big political figures doing the rounds on both sides. There's more balance, more permanence.
As for sexism against Jo, absolutely, there is - some really horrible stuff is going around - but that doesn't detract from criticism and opinion that isn't based on sexism.
Jo Swinson handed me over a symbolic award for participation at a local East Dunbartonshire primary schools chess tournament when I was a kid. Let her fall.
What a cheek didums Jones crossing the border to bore the harmless citizens of Dumbarton.I notice he did'nt risk imposing his pathetic wokeness on the local Neds.
this was a great video, owen. my favourite from the campaign so far: really well approach, presented and summarised!
I hope so... she voted for austerity and the bedroom tax
She's narcissistic a woman who cares not about anyone but herself, thinks she's above everyone and is not a team player. Her bus sums it up 'Jo Swinson's Liberal Democrats', as I say arrogant, delusional and just someone who should be no where near politics.
Video description .... A majority of 5, 339 will be pretty hard to overturn ..... guess not Owen!
Yes because ignoring the democratic vote is deplorable. Hope she learns a valuable lesson.
Very sad that Scottish people with all that talent have been discarded for so long. So although a very sad thing we should allow Scotland to be independant.
What talent? Getting pissed off cheap cider and shooting up smack?
@@Rozmic ha ha thats such an amazing talent its clased as superhero status in Glasgie.
I liked Tim Farron and Vince Cable, they distanced themselves from the Tories, but Swinson is woeful
Vince Cable for me. He always listened and considered the question and didn't just parrot out lines like all the current lot.
You know she spelled Dunbartonshire wrong on her campaign papers
Certainly hope so. Excellent video Owen! Everyone viewing appreciates your hard work.
i love seeing owen interview people, always listens so intently and remains light hearted and human💜
Big thanks to owen he is an outstanding political commentator and reporter
Are you doing one for Wales?😊
SNP voter is just a Labour voter that wants a quick exit from the Tories BY CREATING A NEW COUNTRY
Nnnnnope! Scotland is an ancient country.
It was a country long before England was formed.
Unfortunately through generations of being assimilated into Greater England (UK), that fact has been forgotten about. All about to revert back soon though :-)
As a Scottish voter it pains me that Sturgeon gets a free ride from a lot of other voters.
- Highest budget defecit in Europe
- Maths and Science standards falling for almost 10 years
- Only 2 out of 8 NHS Scotland targets met
- Highest amount of drug deaths in Europe
To those interested in voting for independence
1. IFS says we’ll need budget cuts and an austerity agenda if we become independent to make up for the lack of Barnett Formula funding
2. We’d use the British Pound (according to the SNP) for possibly 10 years post independence. This would mean following the interest rates/monetary policy set by a foreign country. (We’d then use a Scottish currency - goodbye pound)
3. If UK leaves EU, there would have to be a hard border with England (as that would be an EU border)
4. But there wouldn’t even be a guarantee we could re-join the EU because we don’t meet their requirements (budget defecit, for example, has to be less than 3%, we’re at over 7% - UK Defecit, for contrast stands at
@Traditional Arts International No, they're facts actually. Look up FullFact UK. Unlike most SNP voters (who are usually ill-informed hybrid nationalist-socialists) I actually care about facts. I also care about remaining part of one of the oldest, longest running and most successful political unions in history.
@@MRAROCKERDUDE You care to be ran from Westminster by London toffs elected by the English population. That is really the case in simple terms. You either want sovereignty and change for the country or you want to play it safe and just continue with the same. I care more about Scotland than I do about the union.
Yes
I truly hope so..
Immediately the Liberal Democrat representative argues that people were sexist towards Jo Swinson when describing her as a person, I don’t suppose she has ever seen the amount of abuse aimed towards Boris Johnson, Donald Trump, David Cameron, Ed Miliband and Jeremy Corbyn? People don’t aim abuse at politicians simply based on their gender, people in general just don’t trust politicians. Furthermore, people were justified in describing her as “arrogant” because quite frankly a lot of the statements she made publicly were outright ignorant and delusional.
Hi Owen, can you do an Owen meets with Douglas Murray? Cheers!
Lib-Dems declined in the polls coincident with no prospect of close working with Labour to steer country towards a referendum. Labour might think they've played it clever but this has increased the chances of Johnson rule. Lib-Dems challenge in Tory marginals now weakened. But we can live in hope for another five days.
Sharpest haircut yet Owen.
That really added to the political debate. Get a brain.
@@michaelhunt8419 There isn't a debate on Owen Jones channel. Only cheerleading.
I'm sorry but... am I crazy in thinking that in 2015 Jo Swinson lost her seat and John Nicolson was MP for East Dunbartonshire? Oh yes that did happen because I voted for the guy! All this talk of the SNP potentially winning the seat being overly ambitious and only something you'd think after a few drinks is pretty shameful Owen. Could you please do your research next time.
Owen you're an awesome journalist, all your hard work is much appreciated.
Yes. Bloody hilarious.
Would be funny if the rest of the kingdom voted the liberal Democrats into government based on Ms Swinson but the people of East Dumbartonshire kicked her out.🤣
You'll be very well served by this smart lady.
Yes.
Voting Lib Dems & their ambitious not-local representative because Labour is 20 points below here. Hooray for this rubbish 'first past the post' voting system.
Rather quiet 🤔😂
You have to talk a 1000 words a minute at Owen or you won't get a word in.
Honestly I understand Scots, If I was Scottish I would probably vote SNP too
I certainly wouldn’t and I have a Scottish friend who would abstain rather than vote for the SNP or Labour.

ユーネ / Yuune so you understand why Scots vote for SNP but only if they happen to be left wing? I see the level of debate here
Hope everyone noticed almost everyone who's lib dem or tory barley has a Scottish accent
John Rab so are you saying SNP voters are stupid and poorly educated because they use a local accent?
@@davidjames3125 no you clearly are it isn't a local accent it's called scots
John Rab are you serious? Are you saying that there’s no variant in the Scottish accent depending on what part of Scotland you are in? Hahahaha. Let me guess, you’re all for Scottish independence yeah?
What's that got to do with it? My father in law speaks with a scouser accent, has lived in Scotland 50 years and votes SNP and pro-indy.
It wasn't the accents I noticed so much as the pro-Unionists seem to all be boomers.
She couldnt tell the public what a woman is. Well neither could that joke Owen
Well it would seem the answer to this question is yes... But then what could you possibly expect from someone that featured on the front cover of the 'A Brighter Future' magazine with the caption 'Britain's Next Prime Minister'. Not only was this just obvious trash to the readers, but it ignored the fact that the Lib Dems simply didn't have enough candidates that could be fielded on the night to even support any chance of it coming true. The result being Jo Swinson being wiped out in her own backyard should be seen by many as a life lesson about not counting their chickens before the eggs have even been laid, and thinking too much of yourself from the start.
Ultimately this was the story of arrogance of a wannabe leader gone horribly wrong.
Sad but ultimately true.
Big up Owen-man of the people
Francesco Dizazzo watch Danny tommo make a mug of Owen .... again .... he also got labour MPs admitting they support Jew hating terrorists. It’s well worth a watch.
That woman at the end...
Can you do one for Cornwall Owen?
as a No voter in 2014 i would prefer Scottish independence to brexit so will be voting SNP
Owen plese can you interview Noam Chomsky
No real socialists here. Under a socialist EU all countries (or in socialist terms, jurisdictions) would try to work together and help each other grow economically and provide a high standard of living for everyone. Under liberalism or nationalism you get factionalism and secessionism
Very intelligent owen jones
lol, absolutely hilarious, top banter Owen Spitting image should hire you it'd be a proper hilarious piece of work
How come when Owen goes out and asks people about Jo Swinson, everyone hates her. But when he goes out and asks people about Jeremy Corbyn everyone loves him....I say this after the election.
Corbyn made it difficult to vote for him even when liking him.
I love this, top notch journalism.
Well done owen on predicting this..
Scratches my head at this,...
1:50 "lets be neighbours and friends but not be ruled by each other"
exactly as Nigel Farage said about the EU.
The EU didn't control anyone though. Why does the everyday person care about trade agreement? I care what affects me on a daily basis and that control is held at Westminster.
See you didn't challenge the person attacking people with English accents, Owen?
does the argument from the guy at 6:18 make sense to anybody here?
Hope so

John swinson wanted to be prime minister but didn't even win her own seat lol 😂
In a SNP-CON or SNP-LIB marginal, all Labour voters should not SNP. Only the SNP will prop up a Labour government, in SNP-LAB marginals everyone should vote LAB obviously, but honestly, the SNP is an ally not foe in ending austerity.
For the last few days I have a strange premonition that Johnson and Swinson will both lose their seats. I have a premonition that Raab, Gove and Duncan-Smith will also go and Hastings will change hands.
When the SNP candidate went to the door of the man who said he always voted SNP and the other supporter, they would have know they were down as a long term supporter from their records. Scottish people I know are viscerally opposed to Scottish separation and would vote LibDem even if they were not Liberal. Of course the video presents the visits as if they were random. Swinson's previous SNP opponent vanished, as he was looking for an easier seat to win.
ParcelOf Rogue GDPR they can’t hold personal details of how any household votes. All they will be doing is looking for general numbers of who says they will vote for them. Waste of time though don’t care who she is and why she comes to the door it’s none her business who people want to vote.
Did that just call Jo Swinson a "he"?? 😂 5:22

Great work Mr Jones.
it did cost her her seat
Owen Jones is honestly the worst!
I hope Swinson keeps her seat, The SNP should be concentrating on beating the Tories, not a ally, I hope it is Lib Dem gains in South East England, maybe SNP gains as well, and some Lib Dems gains in Wales, that cause Bo jo, to not get his majority, Plus Labour keeping the vast majority of it's northern heartland seats, that the Tories want. Swinson is delightful,
