    I love old aer lingus footage! It shows that flying used to be glamorous to many. To be in the sky and treated with luxury, was to may peoples likings back then.

    Brings back childhood memories. I remember flying out to New York from Belfast via Shannon on this particular plane in the summer of 1969 and coming back on St.Enda three weeks later. It was a time flying was a special experience.

    Wow! Makes me think of my grandmother. First time she was on a plane was an Aer Lingus flight from New York to Dublin in 1965 to visit her family that she hadn't seen since she and my Grandfather left Ireland for New York as newlyweds 25 years earlier. There would be many more visits after that, always on Aer Lingus!

    Thanks for the maginicent scenes of the EI 707 - she looked very fine in the old shamrock livery. The aircraft at the beginning of the video, EI-AMW, was written off in Damascus in 1982. You can still see the remains of her there, as her fuselage has been transformed into a restaurant!

    This brings back strong memories for me. My uncle, Sean J White went with his family to New York for three years as the Bord Failte representaive, possibly about 1969, and seeing these pictures recalls the exact same view we had of their Aer Lingus B707 on the tarmac from the balcony of the old airport building. Other times, me land! Other times.

    In 1968, Aer Lingus made a documentary for cinema release called "Shamrock Sky High". I wonder was this taken from that film. Lovely stuff to see as that was the time I first started taking an interest in aircraft and flying.
    I notice that they made sure they didn't show any of their Viscounts - which would have been looked on as a bit old fashioned by then.

    When I flew for the first time as a child in the mid-1980s the last, vaning remnants of this age could be felt. It created my deep interest in aviation. However, from a technical side I still find flying fascinating but the passenger experience has declined a lot. But much improvement have been made in safety - during early Jet Age (1960-70s) there were a lot more crashes than today...

  • @lospazio
    @lospazio 15 лет назад

    Oh, yes!! How wise of you! Those were really the glorious days of aviation, in which one could fly from Paris to New York paying the equivalent to 5000 or 6000 dollars of today. How could it be compared to the present days, in which people with no style can board a plane for a few hundred dollars...

    The Aer Lingus 707s were TURBOFAN powered, not turbojet. They operated a fleet of Boeing 707-348Cs which were powered by the Pratt and Whitney JT3D low bypass turbofans. They also operated a three smaller Boeing 720-048s which WERE turbojet powered (Pratt and Whitney JT3C).
    Aer Lingus operated (and still operate) into London Heathrow.

      @@user-ky6vw5up9m Sort of. It evolved out of the 367-80/707 basic design but it was substantially different in many area. That's why Boeing decided not to give it a "707" designation. The original plan was to call it the 707-020 but they changed their mind.

      For bonus points, can anyone identify the Air Canada plane in the background? (I don’t know the answer).

    • @EricIrl
      @EricIrl 3 года назад +1

      @@gerardacronin334 It's a Vickers Vanguard. Only about 40 Vanguards were built as there were only two customers - Trans Canada Airlines (later Air Canada) and British European Airways (BEA). Air Canada retired theirs in the early 1970s. BEA later became British Airways and their passenger Vanguards were all retired by 1975. Some BEA/BA Vanguards were converted to freighter configuration (the Merchantman) and these stayed in service with BA until around 1980/81.
      After Air Canada and BA retired their Vanguards, the surviving aircraft soldiered on, mostly as freighters with airlines such as Air Bridge Carriers and Elan Air Freight , until the mid 1990s.
