I was getting FREE 5 gal buckets from a grocery store bakery. They were so kind, called me when they had some.... Eventually I , on occasion, realized I was drawing some attention from a couple of employees as to what I was doing with them... So I started going at 7:00 a.m.when the store just opened for the day. As always, be mindful of who might be paying a little too much attention to you! ❤️🇺🇸👍💪🙏
My daughter went to a local grocery store bakery and asked about buckets. They were so tickled they had them piled to the ceiling in the back room, and just begged her to take more and more of them. She thanked them for them even offered to pay. The next time she went back, they were mean and grouchy and said, no, we don’t have any!!!! I thought what the heck?!
we lie , or i call it throwing off , i tell folks i am growing potatoes in them ( we do grow in pots here but 10 gallon tubs we get for $4 each ) , and have a couple videos i can send real quick to give examples of growing veges in buckets , if they push and ask why buckets we explain the soils not good here , pretty toxic really .. its sad but , so its safer in buckets with potting mix ..... shuts them up and they lose interest
I also wanted to add, save your glass or plastic seasoning containers. Their great to put your dehydrated herb mixes in. Also, the plastic Parmesan cheese sprinkle tops fit on mason jars to use for your own grated cheeses.
I keep all of my glass and plastic containers and their lids from salsa, peanut butter, coffee, creamer, olives, iced tea mix, pickles and so on and use those for storing a lot of things....food and otherwise. Even if buckets and lids are NOT food safe, I use those to store things like first aid supplies, bars of soap, cleaning rags and so on in.
I use my coffee mate 5.1lbs containers to put my beans and rice in until I can put them in large jars. I leave them in their bags till I get the jars 😊
Love the Classico jars, I use them for a lot of my vacuum packing with the Food Saver. I get a little low key mad if someone brings home a different brand of sauce 😂
Jinnie, I get all my buckets from our do-nut shops around our area. $.50 for buckets, $.50 for gasket lids. $1.00 for a five gallon set up is a heck of a good deal and I store as many as I want by adding an oxygen absorber and a dry packet, then stack 'em high in the sides of the garage.
I've been using those Classico jars for years also! And yes, I think they are thicker than Ball jars as well. Omg BUCKETS!! I was at my egg lady's house the other day. She got 18 pickle buckets from some guy at Chick Fil A. Now only a few of them had lids. She said she'd just plant a tomato or pepper in those. They weren't white though. They were green. Any time I've ever asked places for buckets I've had no luck. So, I just stopped trying. Obviously, people like my egg lady have hook ups I guess.
I got a lot online, 5 gallon food grade buckets with the lid for $1.00 each. I bought 60 of them. I thought I found a gold mine with them. I have stored so much in them. Any food that is in glass jars, I buy if my family likes it. I reuse the jars and the lids. Sauce jars, pickle, olives, sauerkraut, 5 pounds of honey jars, gallon glass jars that I get from Costco that has honey, ginger and lemon in it, large glass jars of preserves or jelly. Liquor bottles that are glass, I store rice, or orzo or spices in it for short term storage whatever we use within 3 to 6 months. I make sugar syrup ahead of time and put them in glass bottles so I don't have to make it that often. I put my home made vanilla extract in the glass bottles, also oregano tinctures. I have my friends giving my glass liquor bottles, because we don't drink. I wash them out and reuse them. We save the Arizona ice tea gallon bottles, made with heavy duty food grade plastic and we store water in it. I have yet to have any of them leak. Have to reuse and save our food in it. Keep prepping everyone. 🇺🇲
I've been buying new metal garbage cans and storing long term food in them. Not directly in the can itself, obviously...lol, but in foodsaver bags and mason jars. It's dry and dark in there and best of all they're critter proof!
My daughter works at a fruit stand..they make fresh pies there. She got me a dozen of the 5 gallon buckets & some 3 gallon ones too. I love them to store dry foods in. I had been buying them from wallys for $1 each. Then some lady (a friend of one of the employees) had her save them for her. My son bought me a jar sealer (it's a single one that's recharable) I've been vacuum sealing jars of dry food. IE: oats, cream of wheat cereal & rice. It's so great. Only takes 20 seconds to seal the jar. I do freeze the food for a few days then let it come back to room temp before I jar it up.
We have a friend who's neighbor works at a food plant, they're able to get 4 & 5 gallon sized buckets that had chocolate syrup in them for free, they don't have lids but we use them for lots of things, even have drilled drainage holes and use them for container gardening.❤❤
Hi Jinne, today I cut a milk jug to bring eggs from my chickens in. I kept the handle and opened it enough to fit the eggs in. I usually use baskets but didn't have any handy. I'm hoping to get to town Monday to a thrift store and they often have Mason jars. I did just buy 2 dozen quart jars at my local farm store. Wide mouth because I can easily get my hands in to clean it. Thank you for your continued diligence in bringing us so much great information.
I got free opaque 35 gallon barrels with the lids from my local soda pop bottling company. They are glad to get rid of them. Had a little pop syrup residue I cleaned out but was great. I covered them with dark tarps so bacteria wouldnt grow in the sun. Used them to store emergency water. Figured i could always use my Berkey or purification tabs & boiling to sterilize it.
I literally dropped a jar of broth I canned in an Atlas jar and it didn’t break. The lid even stayed sealed! I had another 2 jars fall out of my SUV onto the gravel driveway and they were perfectly fine too! 😂 I’m so clumsy!
Thank you. Wonderful advice. I'm new to stockpiling and needed jars. I found 30 at an estate sale for 25¢ a jar. I think I did pretty good. The soda bottle tip is cool!
I just learned something from the provident prepp. It is important to have other ways to cook. They filled buckets with BBQ brickets to store. I learn so much from all of you.
Good info as always! I need to buy distilled water regularly so I spend about ten cents more per gallon to get the clear jugs that don’t break down as fast as the milky colored jugs. These are perfect for things like pasta that can be sharp and puncture a vacuum sealed bag. Thanks Jinne
I use Tidy cat litter buckets. I place white trash bags in it. Then they are filled with sealed food. I get them from cat rescue free. They hold just over 5 gal. They stack very well. I have 5 high.
15 years ago Dollar Tree had tall containers that hold 12 cups of beans, flours, what ever your storing wish I would have bought 8 but got 4. I have bought the other DT containers , so I have total of 12 of the containers with the white lids. I had 4 five gallon buckets, I got rid of it was to much food at one time for me to store, and my food was starting to go stale before I could use it up so now the DT containers have been the best for me to store in.
Walmart in bakery has frosting food grade 5 gallon buckets for $1.00 and I use cat litter containers for bagged beans and rice after washing them of course
I use cleaned cat litter containers for powdered cleansers, septic treatments, steel wool pads and other things that we should put away that should not get damp. I use the very cleaned jobs to put away extra water for cleaning, toilet flushing and , push comes to shove, filtering and treating to drink.
I get FREE 1-5 gallon buckets from the bakery in grocery stores... plus when your mother is manager of a bakery... I have a huge stock pile of them in my basement... I wash them and sanitize them....
Thank you for your video. My first fifty buckets were recycled. Then I gave up and started buying them new. $10 for a new bucket and lid and I'd buy 10 at a time. Back then it took me awhile to fill 10 buckets. Not so slow these days. I filled the last ten buckets in under six weeks. Brag, brag. BUT! I've lost count of those things too. It's always a good sign when you have so many you lose count. IMHO. I've graduated to 45 and 35 gallon food grade barrels now. They are great for the big bulk buys like Rice and Beans. And the God's of the discount bins were good to me today. I found lots of goodies with 50% off stickers. Last week it was four jars of Parmesan cheese. That stuff never goes bad and I just took a jar of Parmesan out of storage that I put there four years ago at least and it's still good as gold. Keep up the great work and good luck
And if you end with too many there are many other uses for those buckets. I took some 3 gal square bakery buckets to store my products for my vending booth. They stack up neatly under the table. I also like this size for not being too heavy even full of heavy items, that way most anyone can help carry it.
Great ideas!!!! I've not done many of those, but a few, i have and do. My biggest thrill was going to an Irish festival last weekend where i spotted three one gallon jars that had recently held sauerkraut in them, just sitting on a low shelf. I asked if i could please have them, and for them for free...i was so thrilled !!!!
I nearly choked on my cuppa when you said "$115 for 6 buckets." Sheesh.😮 Great ideas for frugal food storage Jinne.👍 Completely daft paying to much for storage that you then can't afford to fill up. We're Homebrewers, so have made good use of Brewing buckets, & concentrated Grape Juice Jugs, (they'rejust like your Vinegar jugs,) & those kinds of things, all food grade. TFS HC, take care & keep really busy everyone. ❤🙂🐶
Talenti gelato was on sale at Kroger, and I love saving the containers with their lids for buttons, sewing needles, and other notions, and my husband uses them for nails, etc because he can fit his hand in there. Obviously good for popcorn, millet, or I bought some dehydrated lemon packets, etc, that would be perfect for that size of container. Always thinking how to get the biggest bang for your buck nowadays.
Hi Jinny, Very helpful video; thanks! You really made me smile when I heard you say 'Transfer Station.' Before I movedto Houston 10 years ago, I lived 25 years in Vermont. Our lical Transfer Station was the community gatheting place; and often a treasure hunt! I do miss that place😊
May I suggest cleaning and keeping sturdy plastic containers from food items to give away or trade small amounts of food? I also use them to send left-overs home with family members so they don't have to bother to return containers. The biggest problem is finding glass containers. I use 3 liter soda bottles for rice and beans/lentils, and Gatorade/Powerade bottles. I have a few glass soda and wine bottles from other people and use them for some dried items. I use Classico jars from my son, and salsa jars, pickle jars, any glass jar I can get my hands on. I use plastic peanut butter jars for dehydrated items, as well as sturdy plastic other containers. I have a lot of buckets from bakeries, but they are hard to store.
I occasionally get containers from my mosque, such as glass sauce jars. a few were Classico jars. I have gotten buckets from a friend who worked at a store. I have also found jlass jarsby the dumpster of my building or left in our laundry room. I just need to get lids for them
@@ellenedwards7029 Me too. I have been saving them for a good while now. If it comes in a glass jar, I save it. I have some in boxes up in the attic just in case. All different kinds. I swear sometimes I think I have enough spice jars to open a spice company. LOL I do use them for my own dried herbs. But, lets face it. After you've got about 50 or more spice jars...that's enough. Several years ago, I worked at a small grocery store. That helped me out so much. They never carried canning jars though. Never understood that.
Lately we’ve been vacuum sealing our dry goods in Wallaby Mylar bags and then storing them in 6 gallon buckets we bought from a local cream cheese factory. Just gotta keep stacking! ❤️🇺🇸
I love the gallon size pickle jars. My kids and their friends could eat a whole jar in one day. I saved them for years and used them for things like soap scraps and things like that. The kids have been out of the house for years but I still have my gallon pickle jars. I've scrubbed most of them out and have food in them now. They are great for sugar and flour and powfered milk. I also have 5 pound glass peanut butter jars that I've had since I was a kid. I used to buy instant tea in glass jars, too. I've had beans and rice and things like that for years.
I'm Blessed in this area my daughter works at one grocery store in town and my FSIL works at the other.... We have Buckets 😊😊😊. Great video Jinnie 🤗🤗🙏 Kendra
If anyone likes salsa verde Great Value uses what looks like canning jars . I use those for my dry goods. They seal very well with just a hand tightened
Great video, Jinne! I have been saving the big plastic jars that had peanut butter in them; they don’t have a rubber gasket, but they will hold smaller amounts that I can keep in my working pantry. I save my husband's empty iced tea bottles, too. Anything glass. We don’t buy pop, so I have only a limited number of them. But I have put out the word to others, who willingly bring what they have collected. I use the plastic Solo cups for starting seeds for my garden, so I'm planning to ask for those at the end of every family reunion. Like you said, I will gladly wash them since they are my favorite price! These are a bit pricey, but as far as lids for food buckets, I have purchased a set of the Gamma lids for the buckets I will be working out of. Once you get them settled tightly on a bucket, you don't want to have to transfer them to another! Whew! So I thought I'd use a different (cheaper) lid on other buckets of the same food. For instance, if I have 2 buckets of beans, one bucket will have a Gamma lid, and I'll work out of that bucket 1st. When it's empty, I'll pour the beans out of the bucket with the cheaper lid into the one with the Gamma lid, and work out of it.
If you make tinctures and your own vanilla and buy the handles of Vodka, they are perfect for refilling with water. You sure don't have to worry about any bacteria. LOL
Tidy cat makes thick plastic containers that can be reused for water. Just wash them out. They work great for water to flush toilets, or water plants. You can run the water thru your filters if you need to drink it.
I always wondered about those Classico jars. I have read in the past that you can't reuse grocery store containers for canning because they aren't strong enough to be safe to use. So it's good to see that you can.
I get good buckets from Sam’s club for $2 1 gallon or 5 gallons. I also get the 1 gallon buckets free from our local Amish stores. I also get from friends and family. I’m like you started saving my Mason jars from spaghetti sauce
I have never been able to get (or buy) *any buckets from my deli/bakery areas. They either don't have any (most of our grocery stores no longer actually design/frost the cakes on site) or can't/don't give away/sell them. I went to a local bakery last year and was told they had to "recycle" them (?) But you have given me hope about asking at Chinese restaurants! I never thought of asking there. And I have been wanting some Moo Goo Gai Pan !
I have been putting flour, sugar, oatmeal, dried beans and rice in gallon mylar bags with oxygen absorber and then putting the bags inside 5 gal Lowe's buckets. Thank you for all the ideas.
@kentearly805 Thanks for reply. Will check if any friends drink those brands. I had one friend who drank wine from glass jug with handle & saved them for me but he passed away several years ago. 🏜
I miss the days of being able to get free gallon glass jars from restaurants. Very little comes in glass jars anymore. You can still get jalapenos in big glass jars. Also look at yard sales for them.
@@americafirst9144 Sometimes pickled gizzards or pickled eggs and maybe pickles to go with bar food - on burgers, sandwiches that type of thing . Hope you can get ahold of some.
If you are familiar with the Cracker Barrel restaurants, (worked at one for 12 yrs) Their honey and chow chow relish came in glass gallon jars. I still have 10 or 12 gallon jars left that I gathered up out of the trashcans from the years I worked there. Correction I came back to fix. CB's honey was delivered in 8 ounce glass jars, not gallon jars.
This was a very informative video Jinne. I have done most of these but I have got to ask around about the buckets. I have some but I need more. I'm so busy but I need to get in gear. Thank you so much for reminding us of what we need to do. 😊❤️👍🇺🇸 Have a great night with your family.
I go to goodwill every Tuesday for seasoned humans! I find mason jars and other glass containers. They are cheap. I reuse my Rao’s spaghetti sauce jars also.
Great ideas, Jinne! I especially love those clear plastic canisters peanut butter pretzels come in at Costco because they have one indented side I can grab easily with my arthritic hands. Great Value applesauce jars had nice indentations to grip, too. We've gotten free frosting/creme 3 and 5 gal buckets w/lids/gaskets at our IGA grocery bakery. They 're usually just rinsed, but since they get the initial greasy stuff out, they're easy to wash. Perfect for all our grains. We also saved the Tidy cat 35 lb pails/lids for non-food storage (fertilizer, compost, tool caddy), and the smaller handled jugs cat litter come in are good for storing water in the basement to use for the toilets in an emergency.
My BF work at a fast food place they get their pickles in 5 gal. Buckets now he know to bring them home... They do smell like pickles but we use them for water storage until the smell goes away then I'll use them for food if I need..
Where do you store all of these buckets? I have a one bedroom apartment and a garage. The garage is not climate controlled so there is excessive temperature ranges.
You could store non food Preps in your Garage, & put a food filled 5 Gallon bucket on each end of your Sofa, cover them in matching fabric, they'll look like end tables, no one will know. Do the same with your bedside cabinets too. Also you can put book shelves behind Sofas, & fill with tins of food it'll look like an ordinary Sofa shelf. You've probably done these already, so just ignore my waffling on. Lol. 🤗

Lol, I had to pause and go look at my spaghetti sauce preps. I do get the Classico but didn't realize about the different lids they use. I have a mix. I 'm wiser now. Thank you. 😊 Do you know if canning lids fit the style without the screw lines? Thinking for dehydrated foods. I haven't been successful in ridding original lids of odors. 😒
hi there, Is there a place where we can find out how much or if needed the oxygen absorbers ? Like a print out sheet... Thank you in advance.. Love your channel..

Great video! I need to see if I can find some buckets. God bless you and your family.
Lately we’ve been vacuum sealing our dry goods in Wallaby Mylar bags and then storing them in 6 gallon buckets we bought from a local cream cheese factory. Just gotta keep stacking! ❤️🇺🇸
Good advice as usual!
Good video and tips , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Thanks for sharing! 😊
If anyone likes salsa verde Great Value uses what looks like canning jars . I use those for my dry goods. They seal very well with just a hand tightened
Hello have a great evening.
love your videos! your dog is huge lol. we have a half husky half silverback German shepherd, she's a nut case.
Thanks for the update
Great video lots of great information.I get buckets from a bakery use to store things and to grow food in.
I think I'd do the opposite - use the ones with the cheaper lids first, THEN use from the Gamma lid buckets. JMO, though😊
Don't forget big Gallo wine jugs for storing water.
If you make tinctures and your own vanilla and buy the handles of Vodka, they are perfect for refilling with water. You sure don't have to worry about any bacteria. LOL
Thankfully I get free food grade buckets from our local grocery store 👍🥰
Thanks, Jinne, have a good weekend. It's going to be a pretty wet one here in Nashua. ⛈️
Love your channel thanks for sharing!!!
You can reuse Classico Prego Ragu Great Value Mt Olive etc jars
I get good buckets from Sam’s club for $2 1 gallon or 5 gallons. I also get the 1 gallon buckets free from our local Amish stores. I also get from friends and family. I’m like you started saving my Mason jars from spaghetti sauce
Very helpful. Thank you!
How do you make your own laundry soap?
I have bought some 4 gallon buckets from bakeries. Thank you for giving us other idea's of where to go. Have a good weekend.
Useful information! Thank you for sharing! I could use more buckets. They are so expensive.
Our bakery's have stop the 5 gallons. Tractor supply had food grade buckets 2 for 10 lids 2.17
Thanks
What is your laundry soap recipe?
I get two gallon buckets ,from Wal-Mart bakery, for a dollar a piece. Great for storage.
I love your new intro. Thanks for the consistently great videos. 😊
Thank you Jinnie for the great tips. Can you please share your homemade laundry detergent ingredients
Thanks for sharing! I work at a grocery store and keep all the olive buckets. They are amazing!
I tend to save glass jars. They can be used to store a number of dried foods.
Plastic 42 oz. beer bottles work great.....(Ice House) (Steel Reserve) (Old English 800)
@kentearly. Do they have pop off or screw on caps? 🏜
@@lynnheffron6905 They are screw on caps with plastic gaskets built into them. They can be screwed down very tightly and work great.
@kentearly805 Thanks for reply. Will check if any friends drink those brands. I had one friend who drank wine from glass jug with handle & saved them for me but he passed away several years ago. 🏜
Thanks for sharing I place dry food in the liquid creamer containers.(beans.pasta etc.)
I also use atlas jars for canning, they also have pizza sauce in smaller ones that i also reuse
I got buckets for free at Mc Donald's Burger King and Wendys ask the manager and sometimes they throw them out
Love when I get free 1 gallon pickle jars from our local club. They're great for beans, rice, sugar, etc.
I miss the days of being able to get free gallon glass jars from restaurants. Very little comes in glass jars anymore. You can still get jalapenos in big glass jars. Also look at yard sales for them.
Ask at bars.
@@UpNorth069 What comes in glass jars at bars? Olives and cocktail onions?
@@americafirst9144 Sometimes pickled gizzards or pickled eggs and maybe pickles to go with bar food - on burgers, sandwiches that type of thing . Hope you can get ahold of some.
@@UpNorth069 I appreciate the heads up.
Exactly! Thank you! Great info!😊Regina
2 liter drink bottles washed out for water storage also they stack like logs or any beans, rice, salt
Great video, Jinne! So helpful! You are appreciated! TFS!
Hello from Oregon. I am new to your channel. great information.
JOINT COMPOUND IN 5 GAL. BUCKETS. THEY ARE SAFE.
I buy cookies a lot and it comes in a bucket. This way, I'll be able to use them to place chicken feeds and storage for food items.
Thanks for the ideas and info.
Great ideas!
Great tips !!
Love video so helpful and keeping us on our toes, thinking outside the box and being resourceful.
My BF work at a fast food place they get their pickles in 5 gal. Buckets now he know to bring them home... They do smell like pickles but we use them for water storage until the smell goes away then I'll use them for food if I need..
Thank you
Thank you for a great video! Have you ever given your laundry soap recipe?
Love you! you are the boom on this info video, thanks for sharing your knowledge. ML & BLSNGS to you and yours. GBY :) SSOT
We buy nuts at Costco (and those amazing peanut butter stuffed pretzel bites) those containers are awesome for reuse.
I save the gallon jugs of vinegar when used cause they are really thick, are they ok?
Where do you store all of these buckets? I have a one bedroom apartment and a garage. The garage is not climate controlled so there is excessive temperature ranges.
You can store under your bed , or under your couch if it is off the floor. Any place you can store inside or under as long as it is protected is good.
@@bettyc.parker-young1437yes I store in those places but no way a 5 gallon bucket fits in either place.
Lol. 🤗
Is your homemade laundry soap safe for septic tanks?
I think so, we've been using it for years, and the septic guy has never mentioned an issue.
@@HomesteadCorner would you like to share your homemade laundry detergent recipe?
Yes
Walmart used to give me icing buckets. Now they have to put them in the dumpster instead of giving them away. Pretty sad....
See if you can dumpster dive for them!

I was wondering that also. 😊
hi there, Is there a place where we can find out how much or if needed the oxygen absorbers ? Like a print out sheet... Thank you in advance.. Love your channel..
