Great list! I just opened a box from 2019 with breakfast bars, grits, Little Debbie oatmeal creme cookies & crackers that were not repackaged ! So far all is edible & is as tasty as if freshly bought. They were kept in the house & out of direct sunlight. So your list makes me very happy, as we have everything but ghee put back in mylar & oxygen absorbers, vacuum sealed or put in airtight containers. Many thanks for all you share! Yes, I noticed that also. Our local grocery store had their store brand gallon distilled vinegar ‘on sale’ for $1.99. I went to store and it was 4% acidity! Am glad I actually looked at it as price was so cheap because I usually just grab and go.
One thing I appreciate is everyone talks about basics and some on your list were but there were quite a few that I never heard/knew of. I'm keeping a list and this is one of them. Your list will make life not so bland for this single mom with a young son. I need to learn how to bake bread now lol!
That's good to know about maple syrup. We're moving from NH to PA so we bought many bottles from our local syrup farm. I was just storing them in the pantry but I wont hesitate to freeze some if it wont harm it. Thanks
@@JakeJakerson2 We were tired of the winters. We didn't want to go where there was NO winter. But they're much milder here (we lived not far from here 15 years ago). Thank you Jinne. Great list of forever foods. I do have some items to get and repackage so thank you for reminding me! 😊❤️👍Have a great night with the family.
I just opened up whole powdered milk that is a year and a half past used by date. It’s still perfectly fine. Not sure it will last 20 years, but does have a pretty good shelf life. The only thing I’ve had bad luck with is anchovies. I’ve opened up tins past their Best Buy date and they were pretty much liquid.
I keep my honey in warm light on top of my kitchen cupboards. It is not meant to be in a cool dark place according to my honey bee store (they have their own hives) If you uncrystallize honey, it loses its antioxidants.
We buy bottled water in cases from Costco. Make sure you put on pallets and not directly on concrete floor. I use a flash light to read the date on case and rewrite with black sharpie.
We have all these items stored accept wheat berries, we have no way of processing it...... They say you don't have to re-package freeze dried coffee and others say do re-package it, so I did, I transferred it to a brown bag, put in the label and then into a vacuum seal bag and vacuumed sealed it... Sugar was vacuumed sealed on the wet setting, so it doesn't pull all the air but seals it. So far, my sugar isn't hard but regardless, it will become hard over time no matter what.

Adding baking soda to old beans when cooking helps to soften them and will cut down the cooking time.

If you have sugar that gets hard, use a grater to get it back to a good condition.
To prevent sugar from hardening, put slice of bread in with the sugar
If store in a Ball canning jar it won’t get hard. I have keep for years and the sugar does not get hard.

With old spices, if you heat them in a dry pan, they release their oils and get a little more flavor. Just be careful as they burn quick.
You can heat up a cast iron pan, take it off the heat, then dry saute the spices to release the oils.
