  • Following a theme I have already made a video on.
    Westerns and action definitely go together, just like cowboys and cows.
    It’s hard to think of a John Wayne, Clint Eastwood or almost all A-lister Western lead actors westerns that didn't at some point set the screen on fire with gunfire, explosions or some impressive action sequence. Let’s have some fun today and revisit some of the best!

    Here are some of my favorites in no particular order: 1: Fort Bowie: Why? Ben Johnson on a horse in a battle scene catapulting into the fort. 2: Two For Texas; ( TV) Why? The Battle of San Jacinto brilliantly done. 3: Major Dundee. 4: Vera Cruz. 5: The Command. Somewhat obscure Guy Madison film based on an actual Congressional Medal of Honor winner.

    This is an interesting post, but to even mention a pile of horse-dung like The Magnificent Seven remake is an insult to both the Sturges and Kurosawa films and the superlative Wild Bunch and Open Range. Costner's underrated masterpiece will be seen as a classic in a few more years. We CARE about the characters, just like we care about the Bunch despite their flaws. Fuqua's senseless waste of celluloid is flashy and empty. A re-assessment of Heaven's Gate is long-overdue. Well done! The Long Riders is another unfairly neglected oater.

    I'm glad you acknowledge Heaven's Gate. I've seen it on the big screen, full version several times and absolutely love it. My favourite all time action scene in a western is the finale of The wild Bunch. Does the end of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly count as Action as only two shots fired? The Magnificent Seven remake was crap though

    Great shootouts and action scenes for sure. Glad you included the shootout in 'Open Range'. Always a favorite of mine. Although the knife fight scene in 'The Long Riders' is memorable, the failed bank robbery shootout and escape from Northfield is an action scene classic.

  • @lib556
    @lib556 5 месяцев назад +2

    It's unfortunate that you can only choose one per film. The shootout during the botched bank robbery/ambush in The Long Riders is great. Also, the epic final gun battle in The Wild bunch...

    I tend to favor action scenes with great emotional or creative content (not just bloody shootouts).
    Some that come to mind:
    1. The revolvers clicking on empty cylinders near the end of The Outlaw Josie Wales.
    2. The dream-like scene of Little Big Man leading his blind (invisible!) grandfather away from the cavalry massacre (also the shooting of his wife and baby).
    3. The cat fight in the saloon in Destry Rides Again. Also, the end fight between the townsfolk and the bad guys.
    4. Any fight scene with Jackie Chan in Shanghai Noon.

      I did not like Little Big Man. Along with McCabe and Mrs Miller my picks as the most overrated westerns ever.

      Those two movies are considered classics. In Fact McCabe and Mrs. Miller made the AFI top westerns list. But I did not like either movie. Especially McCabe and Mrs. Miller. There are 5 actresses I cannot stand and Julie Christie is one of them. Others? Miriam Hopkins, Katherine Hepburn, Honor Blackman and above all Kay Francis.

    • @davidbrown386
      @davidbrown386 5 месяцев назад

      I know those movies are classics but none of those movies are favorites of mine. Long Lost Father ( because of John Barrymore) is the closest to a Hepburn movie I enjoyed. Some of the actresses I do like? Myrna Loy ( I have seen over 70 films of hers), Sophia Loren, Irene Dunne, Kim Basinger, Veronica Lake, Salma Hayek, and Madeline Stowe.

    • @TS-wh4ey
      @TS-wh4ey 5 месяцев назад +1

      I never understood why they need to do remakes. There are plenty of novels written and any one of them could be the next great western movie.

    • @davidbrown386
      @davidbrown386 5 месяцев назад +1

      There are very few remakes as good or better then the original. Here are a few In the western genre. The Magnificent Seven is a classic as is Seven Samurai. Branded ( Alan Ladd) is every bit as good as The Texan ( Gary Cooper). Last but not least: Tombstone which is as good or better then any version of the Earp/Clanton incident.

      @@davidbrown386
      Umm....I like the 1967 version of 'Hour Of The Gun' as much as 'Tombstone'. However, you certainly have to appreciate the performance by Val Kilmer as 'Doc', which definitely stole the show in 'Tombstone'. Not to mention a great cast of villains, that stacks up against the best outlaw gangs from 'Fistful Of Dollars' and 'For A Few Dollars More'.

    • @davidbrown386
      @davidbrown386 5 месяцев назад +1

      Do not forget both Hour of the Gun and Tombstone are remakes. Law and Order ( 1932) was the earliest film I saw dealing with the Ok Corral incident ( although Walter Huston did a factionalized Wyatt Earp). ps. Huston westerns would make a great video. Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The Virginian and The Furies to name a few:

      Yeah the first one that came to mind as an original Earp/Clanton movie was 'My Darling Clementine' 1946, but you're right about the 1932 'Law and Order'. I think the Earp/Clanton Ok Corral story consist of the best remakes in this western movie lore. 'Gunfight At Ok Corral' and 'Wyatt Earp' are two other decent remakes.
      IMO

    I have always thought the Pale Rider shoot out scene was plain silly and spoilt the whole movie - supernatural or not. The film was an extremely poor and obvious steal from Shane anyway.
