  • Climbing the Sigiriya Rock in Sri Lanka was one of the things we really wanted to do. Sigiriya Rock, or Lion Rock as some call it, was home to a king that lived in a palace on top of this rock fortress. As you can see it is very impressive. The best part came after that as we also decided to visit the Pidurangala Rock, one that was even more beautiful for us. However something bad happened making it impossible to show you guys 😞
Accommodation: we stayed in a beautiful classic hotel near the Sigiriya fortress called Hotel Sigiriya, please check them out at their website: www.serendibleisure.com/hotels...

    History of Sigiriya
Sigiriya may be the kingdom of Ravana who ruled the country maybe 3000 years ago. Rama from India defeated Ravana. Ravana was a undefeatable man. He can be defeated only with a particular weapon of Ravana. But who gave that weapon to Rama to kill Ravana and to destroy the entire kingdom? As the weapon belonged to Ravana Ravana´s stepbrother Wibhishana stole it and gave to Rama. So Rama killed Ravana. It is considered Sigiriya was the kingdom of RAWANA. Some believe that Ravana built the Sigiriya. After that Buddhist monk may have stayed there.
After maybe 2000+ years of Ravana, Sigiri Kashyapa developed the Sigiriya as his own Kingdom in the 5th century AD. Kashyapa was the first son of the King Dathusena. However, the king wanted to pass the reign to his royal son, (second son Mugalan). Kashyapa was the first son but his mother was not from a royal family. To be fair to the King Dathusena, the royal advisors forced to have a Royal Concubine to strengthen his reign. Because the Kingdom was not stable after an invasion from the South India. Dathusena was the King who defeated the invasion by the South India. Before Dathusena, there were six south Indian kings (invaders) who ruled the country from Anuradhapura.
However, due to a conspiracy by Migara who was the son of the sister of the King Dathusena, Kashyapa had to kill his father and took the crown by force. Migara, who was the Army Commander of the King Dathusena´s Army had a vengeance against the King because the King ordered to kill Dathusena´s own sister (Migara´s mother) as she was involved in a conspiracy to oust the King Dathusena. After understanding the death of Migara´s mother, his father also died due to a heart attack. Migara´s father was also a member of the conspiracy.
Migara was married to the daughter of Dathusena. However, this daughter also (Kashyapa´s own sister) was from his first marriage, which took place before he became the King.
The marriage between Migara and Dathusena´s daughter was not successful. There was also a feud between Migara´s mother and Daughter of Dathusena. Migara and his mother harresd Dathusena´s daughter.
Both Dathsena and Kashyapa wanted to build another palace in Sigiriya. However, due to financial issues, Dathusena gave up the idea but Kashyapa did not. At the beginning, Kashyapa did not have an intention to become a king by killing his father because he knew that Mugalan was the right owner to the crown.
Migara told Kashyapa if Kashyapa wanted to build the Palace on top of the Sigiriya, he had to become the King. Kashyapa believed it and he ousted the King Dathusena by force. But when he wanted to build the palace there was not enough money in the treasury. He asked for money from the deposed king Dathusena.
As a part of Conspiracy, Migara told Kashyapa that there should be a great treasure of King Dathusena, who may have hidden it for Mugalan. Kashyapa believed it without knowing that it was a part of a conspiracy to kill Dathusena by Migara to get his vengeance fulfilled. The king Dathusena had built 18 large reservoirs and 18 large canals for irrigation and agriculture. These reservoirs and canals exist and function today itself doing great service to the country. Due to these reasons, there may not be enough money to build a new palace on top of the Sigiriya Rock. Due to unbearable harassments, Dathusena, the deposed king agreed to show the treasure by himself. Then Dathusena went to the Kalawewa (his largest reservoir) and showed that the reservoir was his only treasure. Migara knew perfectly there was no money in the king´s treasury but his all intention was to kill Dathusena he pretended a kind of fake anger and ordered to kill the deposed King Dathusena by walling him alive into the reservoir bund. By this time Kashyapa had have given full authority to Migara to do what he wanted to find the wealth of Dathusena. Kashyapa was so sick of finding money. On the other hand, Kashyapa also had a sort envy against the King Dathusena because Kashyapa may have felt ill-treated after Dathusena deserted the kashyapa´s mother. Dathusena invited Kashyapa´s mother to go to the place but she did not agree to go to the palace as she did not accept Dathusena´s second marriage.
However, after killing his own father, Kashyapa withdrew from the Anuradhapura Kingdom and located his palace on top of the Sigiriya.
The great irony was by the time of Dathusen´s death, merchants who did trades with India, Greece, China and old middle east countries had agreed to incur the total cost of the construction of the palace on the top of Sigiriya. Migara did not want the king to believe merchants as the intention of Migar was different. Migara tried to convince the King Kashyapa that the merchants might not be able to incur the cost of the palace. However, the King tried both options, either to find the treasure of Dathusena or sponsorship of merchants. At the end, King Kashyapa built the palace on top of the Sigiriya Rock.
Mugalan went to India and returned after 20 years with an army from India to fight against Kashyapa. The fight started at the foot of the Sigiriya. During the battle, Kashyapa wanted to change his root tactically. However, Kashyapa´s Army assumed that the King was running away from the battle and the army too withdrew from the battle. Kashyapa was isolated and he had to commit suicide with his own sword. Then Mugalan took the crown and established his Kingdom again in Anuradhapura.

    Sigiriya Rock Sri Lanka
    Sigiriya History
The Sigiriya Rock Fortress of Sri Lanka is situated in Matale district near to Dambulla. It can be reached along Colombo- Habarana highway and turning towards East from Inamaluwa. Then proceeding about 10 km from Inamaluwa and passing Kimbissa township one arrives at Sigiriya.
Before Sigiriya became a Kingdom, the Sigiriya Rock base and the places such as Pidurangala which were endowed with many Caves and a temple had been dwelled by Buddhist monks from around 3rd Century BC. It is also found that these areas had been inhabitant by people prior to King Kassapa's rein. Many Caves also have Brahmi Inscriptions dating back from 3rd Century BC to 1st century AD.
After King Mahanama who ruled Anuradhapura from 410- 432 AD, a Prince named Dhatusena became the King of Anuradhapura in 459 AD, defeating the Indian invader 'Pandu'. The King Dhatusena was the ruler who constructed Kala Wewa or the Kala Wewa Tank, by building a dam across Kala Oya , which is a small river type. The man made 54 mile long Yoda Ela, which takes water from Kala Wewa to Tissa wewa is considered as an Irrigation engineering wonder even at the present day. It has a gradient of just 6 inches per mile along the first 17 miles , which means the level different is just over 8 feet even after the 17 th mile along the canal. During his rein the famous full relief Aukana Buddha statue also was constructed out of a rock which stands 42 feet high.
He had two sons from two queens. Mugalan [ also called as Moggallana ] from the head queen and Kassapa's [ also called as Kashyapa ] from a companion queen. Prince Kashyapa, with the help of the general of the army of King Dhatusena, named Migara, got his father killed and became the King. Prince Mugalan, fearing for his life, escaped to India. The Buddhist Bhikkus and the people were against his conduct and favoured Price Mugalan for the rulership. Fearing that Mugalan will come with an army from India to avenge him at a later day, King Kassapa decided to make Sigiriya as his kingdom. During his rule of eighteen years from 477 AD to 495 AD Sigiriya Kingdom was created. It is believed that he sought the refuge of Sigiriya rock for his safety fearing for his life.
After 18 years, Prince Mugalan came with an army from India to fight with King Kassapa. During the battle Kassapa killed himself thus Mugalan became the King. He went back to Anuradhapura and ruled the country from there and handed over Sigiriya back to the Buddhist priests. Sigiriya as a Kingdom was abandoned in around 1150 AD and was almost forgotten for the next seven centuries Though King Kashyapa is not regarded in high esteem in Sri Lankan history due to his dubious conduct, he is credited as a ruler with unsurpassed imagination put into reality to create a Sri Lankan style marvel of high calibre art and engineering skills that could even challange the outer world structures at that time, which definitely is amazing even in the 21st century with whatever is remaining as ruins of Sigiriya.

Hey David, thanks! You're not allowed to fly near the rock unless you've got permission, there has been an incident of someone crashing his drone in the rock a government officer told us. We didn't bring a drone in the park, we just flew it highly from a far distance and consciously didn't get closer than 100m above it (we wanted to though, but looked for a good middle way)

Do you realize you visited an ancient giant petrified tree stump?
Cracks me up when people say this is carved stone.
None of these ancient civilizations were rock when they were carved. They were wood.
They recently just found mummified/petrified bats in a “rock” cave in the Grand Canyon, weird thing is... they are only TREE dwelling bats.
We are living on ancient petrified land.
