For digital painting use Krita, for everything else Photopea, GIMP maybe will be nice in 3.2 or up, when they introduce nested files (smart objects), and non-destructive filters and layer effects, and better vector editing tools or "integration" with Inkscape. Then is all content aware and AI powered tool sets, but that is different story.
really quick and also detailed video explanaing the basic features of GIMP I want to learn GIMP and also Davinchi Resolve after my exams and in my opinion, learning free softwares (as most of the free softwares are available on Linux) first before switching to the Linux is what people should do
I also use the colored icons, they're so much easier to discern which one I want. I don't know if it's frowned upon, but I've changed all my shortcut keys. Since I only use like 10 features for the minuscule amount of things I need an image editor for, I figure it's fine.
showfoto (that comes with KDE Digikam) is also really good.... for me it is much more easier to use.... (haven't stated watching video yet... ) after watching: :) yes... petty overkill for me... showfoto is enough for me....
2:50 - you don't to remove groups you can just turn them off - there is a checkbox for this above of list of tools, and it works the same as if you would remove groups
Neat vid, learned a few tips even though I've been using GIMP since what it feels was the dawn of time. That being said: For the love of whatever's good for you, please don't do that to yourself, stop using discrete transformation tools and embrace the Unified Transform Tool (Shift+T)!!!
The Unified Transform Tool is good allrounder of all the transformation tools, but it can also lead to some to more user errors because of that. When you have all the hotkeys memorized, then you can't accidentally grab the rotate function, since it's not the one you selected. Advantages and Disadvantages. Both solutions are in there for a reason
After switching to Linux I really miss PS. The only Windows Software I miss using. PS AI selection of object was so SWEET. Someone pls share how do U select object to cut out from Background. In gimp! It takes a lot of time HELP!
No non-destructive processing, no go for me. I use Affinity Photo and use the parametric layers all the time. Given where GIMP is now and what version they say this is coming, and the rate the version is happening, it will be 10 or even 20 years before it is available. I wish Serif would at least do a Flatpack, which should work for all Linux systems. They would only have to maintain one version instead of one for each separate system, if I understand correctly. But that will never happen; if nothing else, Linux users are opposed on principle to commercial apps. I understand that, but not having the commercial apps or something close to their equivalents keeps me from every using Linux beyond just as a Firefox box.
Thanks for doing this -- but why all this bullshit to start? This is for beginners, right? Okay, tell us how to begin please Just get to it. For me --experts throw all kinds of crap at us too fast. Just start by starting -- show us how to OPEN or start a work. How the hell do I do that basic thing? How do i import a picture, say, to add text. Very basic,. Why do you go into 50 different things before that?
