Quincy Jones produced this song. He said it was one of the most difficult songs to make because he had to tell all those mega stars that only a few people would get solos. But once everyone came together, they all understood why.

To understand... in the mid 80s, Africa was experiencing severe drought and famine. A group of British rockers lead by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure released a record (Do They Know its Christmas) with all proceeds going to famine relief in Africa. Then USA rockers lead by Harry Belafonte, Ken Kragen and Quincey Jones, recorded the video here with the same goal. The last effort was LIVE AID. This is a weekend concert televised from three continents. The Live Aid video of Queen you watched is from that concert. Phil Collins flew on the SST Concord to all three continents and performed in USA, UK and Australia in the same concert. It was televised on MTV. Incredible concert. The finale song in the UK included Bob Geldof, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury and most of the huge array of rockers that performed throughout the weekend event. The videos of the Uk Christmas record and that finale are on You Tube.
They raised over $200 million and it was sent to Africa. Unfortunately it was intercepted by a dictator and terrorist group who used it for weapons against its own citizens.
Still... no generation before or after in music ever took on such a huge task which could have made a difference. Next to this, in 1986, you have Comic Relief USA by Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal. They raised OVER $50 million for the homeless in the USA. I am very proud to be part of the generation that gave so much to humankind. ✌🏻

No, we don't. The world may be full of political tensions now, but when you see a man with his nine children, all looking like concentration camp survivors, standing outside a tent where his wife and his equally skeletal infant are dying inside then the medical doctor says they'll be dead by the end of the day, and the other kids within two weeks, cause they have used so much of their body mass to feed themselves, they'll never recover. Just giving them small amounts of food in that state of weakness could kill them from the shock to their system. And then multiply it by hundreds of thousands, everywhere, for months on end. It does something to a young person watching that. You do not know how fortunate we are that no one seems to be facing that kind of threat today.

I am so impressed you really did a fabulous job! This song is iconic and will never be forgotten. All of these stars had at least a number one song of their own, but came together for one cause, to help the people during the great famine and starvation in Africa, 1985. All proceeds from purchases and donations went directly to bringing food to Africa. I do believe the song was not just about our own choices to take care of ourselves, but to remind us that we are all one on this earth, And it takes all of us making the choice to come together and make a difference. Together we can make a brighter day. Yes that one artist was Tina Turner, and yes the woman singing with Michael Jackson was the great Diana Ross. The duet at the end with Stevie Wonder I’m surprised you couldn’t remember him “the boss“ Bruce Springsteen! Towards the beginning you had Lionel Richie and Stevie, Followed by PAUL SIMON and you guessed it Kenny Rogers. The next man was Al Jarreau, then Kenny Loggins who sang footloose, Tina Turner, and Steve Perry from journey, you got him. And you guessed correctly Daryl Hall. In the back actually singing chorus was Dan Aykroyd and also Bette Midler. The incredible voiced powerful Black woman was Dionne Warwick joined by Willie Nelson. Next included Huey Lewis, and a voice that you recognized but couldn’t place what is the legendary Bob Dylan! Oh and the incredible voiced woman with crazy colored hair was Cyndi Lauper. You got Ray Charles and of course Michael Jackson. And the incredible duet at the end wells again Stevie Wonder and the great Bruce Springsteen! Towards the end there was an incredible Solo by James Ingram. The song was mainly written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. And you missed the man who produced and was the conductor throughout this song the great Quincy Jones. I know you’re gonna listen to this again many times. Thank you so much for reacting to it.❤️✌️

Just look at the artists that participated.... almost every single one of them are legends. I'm proud of my generation, we tried so hard to make a positive impact. I know there are still people that try but in those days music was for everybody and there were no rock, country, rap, soul stations. I heard it all on every station I listened to. "We Are the World" is a song and charity single originally recorded by the super-group United Support of Artists (USA) for Africa in 1985. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie (with arrangements by Michael Omartian) and produced by Quincy Jones for the album We Are the World. "We Are the World" opens with Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Tina Turner and Billy Joel singing the first verse. Michael Jackson and Diana Ross follow, completing the first chorus together. Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson and Al Jarreau sing the second verse, before Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry and Daryl Hall go through the second chorus. Co-writer Jackson, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper and Kim Carnes follow with the song's bridge. "We Are the World" concludes with Bob Dylan and Ray Charles singing a full chorus, Wonder and Springsteen duet-ting, and ad libs from Charles and Ingram.

As you so often say, just keeping things real as you go down the rabbit trail of popular music, the truth that you are finally discovering is that a soul is not made up of someone's outward appearances or racial color tones. The definition of a true soul is that of an eternal being that does not die. The superficial things of this world will all someday cease and fade. When we experience mere glimpses of awesomeness here in this world and especially through the joy of Music, we get to see just a crumb of what is promised in paradise. If it is an expression of Love and Truth , its a beautiful thing no matter what your pigmentation of skin tones.
Love is eternal, and proof of this is when ever we experience the physical loss of someone dear to us. As you sit in your room recording your reactions to various forms of music , your soul is touched by certain memories that are valued. Your family does not have to be with you in the physical to know that you love them. I know this is some deep stuff, but I know you will understand what I am saying. Music is just that added vehicle of expression to ones inner soul. Good music is simply Good music. Peace.

I forgot all about Dan Aykroyd being a part of this. Also, to the 5 people who down voted this, I hope you find a rattle snake in your shoe.

Poor rattlesnakes don’t deserve that. They’re just living their rattlesnake lives.

I was eighteen when they recorded this song. Exciting! This song played all over the word. The conductor was Quincy Jones. A hug from Brazil 🇺🇸🇧🇷

My favorite part of that song is the duet with Stevie and Bruce - the contrast between Stevie's smooth notes, and Bruce's hard raspy fry is so epic. My favorite moment of Leo's reaction was when he realized he recognized Steve Perry - "JOURNEY JOURNEY"
Amazing to think a year ago when you started this...ahem...journey,...you would have known maybe three of these. As a fan of most of these artists growing up in the 80s this is a powerfully nostalgic moment and I loved seeing Leo enjoy the same artists I'm loved my whole life.

Prince and The Revolution recorded "4 the Tears in Your Eyes" for the album. A rare live version of the song, done for Live Aid, was included on Prince's The Hits/The B-Sides.

You have such a beautiful heart, Leo & I was so proud when you yelled out Journey & Daryl Hall! I don't know why, I just was. Maybe it's because I enjoy seeing the boxes that separate us all destroyed! Whether it's race, religion, or music! We should at least open ourselves to a little bit of everything. I am so proud of you for doing this yourself, in spite of what some others have said. Keep being you...you're a gem!

Notice no one here is in their 20's.... these were all ACCOMPLISHED artists from the 60's, 70's and still extremely relevant in the 80's and many are extremely relevant TODAY! They aren't one hit wonders like artists today and they all could SING without the use of technology. That's why this is a group of LEGENDS!!!!!

And that is just one reason why the 80's is still seen as a golden decade for music. Sooooo many talented singers, in all genres.

Brings tears to my eyes, so many gone now. This was a time when stars could get over thier egos and come together for the sole purpose to try and save others. It was a beautiful time...pulling together to do something right. British did one too, Do They Know It's Christmas, with British singers.
