Your deep thoughts made me think of my mom. She was an amazing quilter who started many more quilts than she finished. It's now up to me to finish all the quilts she started, most of which are finished blocks that need to get sewn together. It makes me sad she won't get to enjoy the art she created. Having more ideas than time to finish everything is real.

I’m a multicraftual person / hoarder and a shift worker so the projects are piling up but every year for Christmas I always make my children their Christmas gift (usually finishing off on Christmas Eve, however, this year I am done the gifts already and I really don’t know what motivated me) The good thing about my craft hoarding is that my kids always find the items they need for school projects in my craft space, the bad thing is we can’t always walk thru the crafting area 😂

I also have that "not enough time" overwhelm. I write done any ideas that come to my mind on coloured index cards and then revisit them later to see if it's something I still want to craft.
So glad to see you were able to fix the neckline on your linen dress. It looks wonderful with the sweater you made as well.
Also, I loved seeing you use the glass spindle whorl. I have an interest in hand made glass beads and it was great to see a whorl made from glass.

Creative brains are so fun, and challenging. Learning to give myself permission to be done with a project was a huge help for me. Saying I don’t care to finish it and ripping it out - even though there was nothing wrong with it was such a relief.

I really appreciate how much BLF/Silk this box has been giving us to spin.
As for how I handle too many UFOs...I'm kinda knitting or spinning because I have writer's block and nothing will motivate you to do something more than the desire to not to something else.
I do also have to say that as someone with autism, working with my hands and building something is so satisfying and rewarding and really helps me unwind (or wind up) at the end of a workday. I do try to keep weekends for big projects or things I know will require concentration. But during the week, I do what I can do quickly and put down without too much trouble.

Honestly, this Deep Thoughts with Evie could have been a fairytale, since fairytales have some sort of cautionary or moral aspect to them! I think the idea of staying balanced with crafting and hobbies is a huge struggle for a ton of people, I know it is for me. Everyone I love has winter birthdays, so that added to the holidays means that it's back to back projects for other people and it can start to feel overwhelming, especially if I feel like I got started "too late". It's a continual process when you really want to Do All Of The Things!!

I love how your dress turned out. The colour is awesome to. The reason the neckline got stretched out is because you indicated that you hung it overnight. Staystitching helps with preventing the bias from stretching. Even ironing the interfacing prior to staystitching can distort the neckline. The worst part is a lot of patterns don't indicate to stay stitch necklines. So frustrating when you work so hard in something but I'm glad you were able to fix it without having to start over.

With my ADHD i get hyperfixation so one week I'll be sewing, the next week its spinning, ceramics takes etc etc. I've got so many ideas just swirling around my head and so many unfinished projects. Then im always too exhausted to do anything. I find that if i just make time to sit and spin and listen to you in the background then I'm grounded and it must activate my creative brain because the following days I'm able to put in more effort with other stuff. It's like a gateway craft for my brain.

A few years ago I narrowed the types of crafts I continue to do. I took out things that I didn't do as often like cross stitch, beading, and weaving. I had a floor loom for over two years and I warped it once. My top craft consistently is knitting and second is spinning. I also love to sew bags, make epoxy tumblers and woodworking. At some point I would also like to get back to bobbin lace making, which is what lead to my woodworking journey. I was not able to afford to purchase my tools, so I learned how to make them.
My plan to help me focus so I am more efficient with my craft time is to build my RUclips channel and share my crafting journey. Not sure if it will work but that is the plan for 2023.

I honestly can't imagine what it must be like to have just a few projects going at a time! Usually it's more like multiple projects across many domains... spinning, weaving, dyeing, knitting sewing. Sometimes these projects are bigger, crossing from one to another (dyeing and prepping fiber to spinning to weaving to sewing). Sometimes they are just one offs. Because of the children I'm parenting, I only have an hour or so to do one of those things each day. I've learned to accept that long timelines are normal and some projects may take years (because I'm also a mood crafter as well.) I've been working on focusing on process rather than product, gaining satisfaction from the act of making and learning what I can with each project.

Creativity overwhelm is a permanent state in my brain! I find it so difficult to throw anything away as everything has potential for a crafter, and I often "see" finished crafts with pieces of junk. It can get to the point where it is paralysing and nothing gets done because it's too overwhelming. 🤯 My brain will often "guilt" me into not crafting too, since if I have the energy to craft, I must therefore have the energy to do other chores and tasks. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Thanks for your deep thoughts, and the wonderful videos. Lots of love from a fellow creatrix. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I think most people get overwhelmed with the amount of projects they want to start. I try to keep my works in progress to five or less at one time (sometimes I have more but I try to keep it to five or less because that feels manageable to me). When I finish a project then I can start a new one. I love the green plaid fabric!

Even though I’m retired now I still find I have many more projects going on and in my head that there are hours in the day! I was really resistant to making a “list” of my goals because it seemed way too much like my previous job. I decided the way I would keep a list was to have a craft journal and not only try to document what crafts I worked on each day ( weaving, spinning, knitting, beading) but also what I wanted to accomplish for the next day. I am really surprised at how well it has worked and how much more fun it is than I expected! I’ve bought a new journal to use for next year (my Christmas present to me) and am looking forward to it! It has been a great feeling of satisfaction to look back over the year and see what I actually accomplished!

I can relate to feeling creatively overwhelmed, and having more ideas than time.
Part of my challenge is I'm a stay at home mom, with my youngest still preschool aged. Anything more complicated than basic handspun, or stockinette stitch for knitting, is a no go for me right now. I just don't have the free time to focus during my breaks in the day, or the brainpower after the kids are in bed.

I’ve a stack of bagged up projects waiting to be done, which I’m working through, but there’s always something wonderful that comes along to attract my eye and brain, and money. My main concern is becoming a hoarder of supplies. Like others, I have skeins suffering from the “once used/gone forever” syndrome. But I have started to use them up as, I’ve realised, there are always more to take their place anyway. Because makers and dyers are talented. I don’t want the once cherished ones to suddenly be lost to the “I don’t really like that anymore” doom pile. Or for something to happen that prevents me from ever using them. Perhaps a My Precious MAL. Where we each use something we’ve resisted using. Whatever the fibre or project. Lovely ep today. Thank you.

I am almost always in "idea overwhelm." I'm going through a pretty heavy period of it right now. The way that I handle it is really just to realize that I'm not going to follow through on everything and let it be ok. I know that for me, a big part of the enjoyment is the excitement over finding and trying something new. I also try to be gentle with myself when I don't come back to a project.

Also the deep thoughts section was so welcome, I'm constantly talking to myself about whether I should enthusiastically go with a new idea, or ban myself from doing so for the sake of the unfinished projects sadly sitting abandoned in a bag plus there's the consequential guilty feelings. Then again perhaps I would be doing myself an injustice not embracing the new idea or potential experiment. Back and forth in my head... And in the meantime I could be actually working on that plan or UFO rather than wasting time and energy stressing. So comforting that this is not a phenomenon unique to me also to see how much you achieve whilst following your natural inclination to begin new projects as they occur to you. Your enthusiasm is contagious.

I've cultivated a no-buying without plans approach, which helps with the consumerism part, but of course I can make LOTS of plans... I think the main things I do are 1) not plan more than 2-4 projects out, and always have 2-3 projects going (right now it's knitting a sweater, knitting a beaded shawl though that's a little bit of time out during gift making season, and spinning prooooobably for a colorwork hat but mostly to practice spinning), and 2) make the crafting part of my day; I take my knitting with me EVERYWHERE, and because of my family structure and my disabilities, I spend a lot of time driving people places and then sitting in the car waiting -- which is knitting time. So I knit throughout the day, I spin when I have some upright energy, and if I think a craft or project looks really neat or I want to do it but I can't figure out how it would fit (sometimes literally -- I'm looking at you, weaving) in my life, then I just let it go as something cool that someone else can do.

Well i guess i am late to the party... but Evie, if you are reading this:
i can totally relate to that pile of "i want to do this with that and thats why i bought this" and UFOs, i had this problem since i was 7yo (now 21). With 18 i had my graduation in sight and knew i had to move out shortly after (and leave most of my stuff if i don't reduce it), so i picked one of my many notebooks (yes, i collect beautiful notebooks too) and did this: I wrote every idea that crossed my mind or fell in my hands, not even hobby related but also poetry, recipes, some entry tickets from concerts i've been and so on, in that notebook. I would allow myself to have "one WIP of every kind", so i had a painting, something to knit, to crochet, sewing, papercrafts, and sometimes other stuff like clay figures, but not more than one. Every other idea i would write down, with name of the fabric or yarn, the amount, what i had intended to do, every thought i had on that. If i finished one of said WIPs and not have the next thing in mind i would look through the notebook and choose the next. If i ran across something that would not be available any longer, i would simply sleep a night over that idea and buy it (make an exception) or not. When i finished a project that had a "project page" in the notebook i would print out a small photography and glue it in place somwhere on the page.
That concept left me with a notebook that kind of represented my brain and activitys over a certain time, something like a diary, but without the typical "dear diary,..." texts. Its always fun to look back on the last years, collect ideas for presents or just embrace what i managed to do. And, if i have something in mind that i don't have the capacity to do right now, i know where to write it down to don't forget, and where to find it if the time comes. Now i am on the third notebook and i don't plan to quit this way of doing things.
I just wanted to tell you this because it helped me a lot during that time of reducing my stuff, and also during exam phase when i had to learn but wanted to do everything but learning, and since you said you've been having that problem of too many projects for a too little amount of time and wanted to not forget doing something for you, i thought this idea of a notebook would help you keeping track of your ideas, for whom and when. If not, i hope jou enjoyed reading the story of my path :D
    Happy delayed new year!

I do medieval reenactment too, so I get all these ideas for tablet weaving, and knitting those tiny silk reliquary bags, and then I need to replace all the socks in the house with the superior hand knit ones but that means I need to knit them and and and.... Yes, I get it. Best thing I do it knit on my reliquary bag once a week (is tiny and fiddly), then work on my household projects. And remember that nothing has a deadline unless I give it one, so I just... don't. There will always be another competition for Arts and Sciences, my husband will be happy for warm socks anytime of the year, etc. So while I don't necessarily get overwhelmed anymore, I do make lists and try not to add to them until something else is finished.

That green flannel is just so PRETTY! A dress made out of that will be soo cozy. For the Creative Brain shenanigans, I am definitely one of those people who are working several projects at the same time. The one way I have found to rein myself in on buying new materials/getting new idea overload is to move/reorganize the stash I already have. It both reminds me of just how much I have (which is always more than I think it is), and also re-ignites my excitement for projects that I have already bought materials for and then never started. Then I can pick one of those projects and push them further up in my queue (which, coincidentally, makes room in the Stash for new projects 🤭...)

I have many projects in line to hopefully finish someday. I do what I can, because I also work full time teaching. It helps to make a project list to keep track, and then decide which one you want to make the priority. Right now I am spinning and dreaming about crocheting, knitting and weaving with the spun fiber. You can also put a note with the fibers as you get ideas of how you want to use it. Our creative minds are always planning the next wonderful thing to try. I need to live past 100 to get it all done. Happy crafting everyone!!

I absolutely love your dress and sweater combo. I totally get overwhelmed with all the projects I want to knit and sew(linen dress being on that list). I have to just stop and consider what projects I have in the works and tell myself if I get this many done I can start something new. It works because I feel such an accomplishment when I have a finished object to wear🤣.

I think the green plaid dress would be lovely on you, can't wait to see it!
My personal tip is, Do Not start a new project until you finish the old one, whether it be spinning, knitting, etc. That keeps me task orientated and a really big sense of achievement when I do finish a project. Also, I have a size constraint on my stashes, in particular, my bought yarn has its own basket, and I don't go over my basket limit (though it is completely filled to the brim). It will last me a while and by the time its empty, I'll have my own hand spun to refill it with.

I used to be a one project at a time type of person but with so many beautiful projects I have changed that. Now I have a minimum of 3 projects or my three levels. I always have one quick one so I can feel like I always finish something. The second project is usually a simple sweater, something rhythmic and take a couple of months to finish. Third is my "this is taking forever project" and those are the blankets, crazy cabled sweater or anything that I know will need some serious dedication to it. If I have more than that it feels like I never get anything done.

Whenever I take up a new hobby, I always go overboard! My new love is weaving so of course I wasted no time getting a rigid heddle loom and an inkle loom. I bought books and accessories for the inkle loom which enable me to do plainweave (which I'm currently enjoying), Baltic pickup, tablet weaving, and making Sami bands. I have so many projects in mind! The way I avoid becoming overwhelmed is by learning and practicing each method before moving on to the next. It takes some self-control but it keeps me focused!

Always a fan of spindle spinning, especially medieval! I think the dress turned out lovely; oatmeal linen is my fabric of choice so often, so I'm biased, I guess. :) I'm not very good at controlling my creative impulses, except that I don't like to buy plastic more than I have to, and I don't want to own more "stuff", so if a creative urge requires a whole new set of equipment, it probably gets more thought before I dive in. At the holidays, I find that the urge is strong to make decorations (hand sewn ornaments, or woven table runners, quilts, coasters...) but I'm always running behind with things I'm making for gifts, so I inevitably decide to make the chosen decoration at the end of the season and often just finish in time to pack it away. But then the next year I get a fun surprise! That's happened the last few years and I think I like it now. I think, especially as a creative professional, you have to give in to those urges, to recharge yourself and your imagination, to learn new things, to remind yourself that you have fun doing these things, or you are facing burnout from the activity that, in theory, brings you the most delight.

I loved your deep thoughts! I've always said my crochet is my self care. (I'm new to spinning so that's joining my crochet). For being overwhelmed with Ideas, I keep a journal where I jot down things that fly through my brain so I can revisit them when I am feeling uninspired.

Love your fabric choices, I think the dress/shirt combo is going to be super cute! I always feel so overwhelmed when I think of how many projects I want to make. Something I've gotten in the habit of doing is keeping a crochet journal. I have "to make" lists (marking with a star if I have the yarn, and making sure to note which yarn I want to use for it). I also have a "current projects" list, it helps me keep track of when I start and finish a project so I get a little seratonin boost when I see how quickly I wind up finishing a thing. If I can't decide what I'd like to work on from my "to make" list, I'll write the names of every project I have yarn for on slips of paper, put them in a yarn bowl, and tell my partner to pick one at random. Keeping track of all my projects I've made in 2022, and all the projects I want to make, has helped me be a little more focused and a little more mindful of my yarn stash. I also keep random project-related notes and thoughts in the journal. As someone who is list-oriented, it's been really REALLY helpful.

Happy Vlogmas! Over the past few years I have started collecting more and more hobbies, leading to more UFOs and just feeling overwhelmed. What I ended up doing that worked for me was taking a piece of paper, creating sections or boxes for each craft I do (ie, a box for knitting, one for spinning, one for needlepoint, etc), and writing down each UFO. That way I could really look at what I was working on at the time. I will highlight the ones that I feel are priority or are time sensitive, and anything else I just work on when I want to. On the other side I keep a list of want to's for each section, so I can keep track of new ideas or things I have seen that I don't necessarily want to start yet but want to think on a bit more before doing.
At first I thought the list would make me feel overwhelmed but instead it reminded me of projects I had started but hadn't finished and I had renewed energy to work on. It also allows me to have a good place to go when I want to work on a particular type of craft but don't know exactly what I want to work on; makes it easier to select sometimes when I just have a list in front of me.

This really resonated with me! I have been struggling for years getting excited about a new project before finishing the last one. I'm trying a new strategy this year - only having two projects on the go at any given time; this helps me switch between the two and not get bored easily while still inching closer and closer to completing all of my UFOs :)

It really is a beautiful dress. I wish I was good at sewing. I use my creativity with wool, yarn and weaving. Completing all my projects can be difficult. I have a woven pillow cover from last summer that I have yet to finish. However, I have no problem with finishing a project if it is for a gift, then there is no problem.
