  • A drawn out, barely edited video chronicling the removal and replacement of a water pump on a 2015 Volkswagen Passat with a 1.8tsi CPRA engine.
    ‪@deamonmachine‬ was the inspiration and motivation to make this video. Please take a moment to watch his video.
    This should work for any CPRA/CPKA (EA888) found in:
    2014 - 2017 VW Passat
    2014 - 2018 VW Jetta (including Jetta Sport)
    The specific car in the video is a 2015 Passat with a manual transmission.
    Water pump started leaking around 93,000 miles. Coolant could be smelled after driving and a small puddle would form immediately after driving. Water pump did not leak while sitting, only while running.

    The was you showed me these parts, I don't have to do a ton of the other work I thought I would have to. And you showed me a few of the things I was wondering if I could do man. Awesome and thank you

    So if all you really need is a water pump than this is a great shortcut.
    However the thermostat housing and the small plastic nipple are well known to crack and leak . Its really not hard to remove the intake manifold. The only work underneath is the shield and a clamp and bolt for the air tube.
    A triple square socket is needed for the lower brace bolt on the intake near the alternator.

    Thank you for this very helpful video. I'm am about to do my 1.8t water pump bc of overheating. it's a mystery... I actually pulled the thermostat totally out to see if that fixed...not. I'm thinking either water pump or a clog somewhere. Thanks again.

    I think it would better to take manifold to do the water pump and a big reason is to decarb the intake. Getting two birds with one stone

    I am replacing the water pump today, the hardest annoying part has been that air filter assembly holy shit 😂 I had a question is the thermostat connect right there with the water pump? Because might as well replace both ey? Thanks for your input and thanks for the video and detailed angles man!

      @@dareiapowell2276 so a heads up for that air filter assembly my vw is a 2016 Jetta you just gotta yank the shit out of it because these stupid plastic clips really hold it down, and it takes allot of force to pull it and the thermostat is pretty much connected to the water pump housing so it’s legit right next to it when you remove the water pump. As I would deff advise to replace both, no need to worry about it that soon hopefully lol. Also I’d add that you don’t have to remove as many things as on this video just drain your coolant to make it easier although the water pump will have some in it as well and don’t forget to change your oil as I’m sure it’s mixed with coolant by now. Also note the 2 t30 screws on thermosta u can get from underneath just remove the skitplate.

      @@Aesthetics622thank you so much . i have a 2014 vw passat, I was able to get the water pump out but my thermostat i cant reach for some reason also did you mark the timing belt? I did not think that would be a concern but apparently it is.

    • @Aesthetics622
      @Aesthetics622 8 месяцев назад

      i ma unsure of the passat but on the jetta, timing belt is on the left side, and the water pump and thermostat is on the right side both of them for the jetta. But if you are removing anything around the timing i would for sure mark everything and even take pics along the way. @@dareiapowell2276 so i take it yours is on the left side which would be even easier to get to imo just take your time.

    Unbelievable. I don't know mechanics and have no desire. I'm kinda broke right now so I'm looking for other ways to replace my water pump and housing iny 2016 VW Passat SE 1.6 L that are less expensive than the two quoted I got: 1200 and 1/2 Day
    2. 1800 and 4 days. How do I find aecuanic who's gonna chargee a fair price? I looked up the cost of water pumps with housing. I HATE being ripped off (broke or not) but I can't drive it. The symptoms before I had it diagnosed was coolant leakage. Any thought? I'm thinkin maybe I can do it??? Uh, a little risky!

    Super helpful video. How did you know your water pump was going bad and needed replacement? Trying to figure out if the weird noise coming from my 2015 Passat 1.8T engine is the water pump going out or something else.

    • @JustinRaymer

      I noticed a puddle of coolant under our car, only after it had been driving.
      When I cleaned it up and let it sit, there was no leak. There was also a smell of burnt coolant after driving and a slow drop of the level in the expansion tank.
      Facing the engine, pump is on the right of the engine. Above the transmission. If the noise is coming from there, it's a possibility. If the noise is coming from the left(passenger) side, it could be a pulley, like an idler pulley or tensioner pulley.
      EDIT: In every example I have seen of a water pump failing, they either leak from the shaft the pulley/gear sits on, or out a weep hole.

    Thank you for the video. I have a 2016 Passat SE. Question; after the installation you fill the system with coolant and you don't have to do anything else? I am about to replace my water pump.

    • @JustinRaymer
      @JustinRaymer  5 месяцев назад

      Correct. However I did need to use a vacuum filler to completely fill the engine with coolant.
      You need to make sure you get all the air out of your engine block.

    • @JustinRaymer
      @JustinRaymer  4 месяца назад

      I did not touch the thermostat.
      The pump has an o ring/gasket and no sealant is needed.

    Is the belt on it the water pump the timing belt?

    • @JustinRaymer
      @JustinRaymer  4 месяца назад

      No. It is it's own separate belt.
      These engines run a timing chain.

    Did replacing just the pump help? I'm having literally the same issue, I have a 2015 Passat, with almost 123,000 miles, and it is still running elegantly, but it is the same exact situation, no leaking at idling just leaking under pressure, but I'm not sure to fix just the pump or the housing as well.

    • @JustinRaymer
      @JustinRaymer  Год назад +1

      In my case, replacing the pump fixed my problem of losing coolant.
      After removing the pump, you could see that coolant had been leaking from the shaft that the pulley was connected too. In hind sight, this could have been verified by just taking off the water pump cover and checking with a flash light.
