Cladding our Curved Campervan Ceiling | Transit Van Conversion E20

- Опубликовано: 4 окт 2024
- It's time to put up our ceiling cladding in our campervan! Our Transit has a curved ceiling nearest the cab so it was a bit tricky at times!
First we had to choose between some different coloured osmo oils and make a few custom pieces so that we had somewhere for the cladding to sit on all around the ceiling.
We pre-drilled all the holes first and then got to work putting up the ceiling. A few quirks along the way but we're very happy with the result, it makes suc a difference.

The curved ceiling gives it some real character…I love it…well done getting it worked out.
Thanks! Yeah we really like how it turned out 🙂
The joys of cladding I’m doing mine this weekend and trust me I’m dreading it!! 💯💯😂😂
It took a while, especially with the curvy roof! Good luck 👍🙂
@@SelfBuiltStories what I like about you guys is your patience and attention to detail I sadly skipped that part of programming when I was born, but I’m taking my time and will do my best can’t wait to see your van completed.
Haha cheers, hope your build is going well 🙂
Great build series guys. I’ll be tackling one soon as a solo newbie. Wish I had a team like you as you tackle all of the challenges amazingly well together. Love it!
Cheers! Having two people definitely helps, especially for this project as I (Tim) had the job of being tall enough to use my head to hold the panels up while Abi guided them into place 😅 Good luck!
Wow. That really looks stunning. 😲 And I just made a note on how to cut out our fan opening - ingenious! 😎👍
Looking back to the days of the "bare metal loading area" - you have come a long way. Thanks for taking us along...🙏
Best regards from Germany! 🚐☁️🍀
Cheers! We're happy with how it turned out and the colour we went for 😀 Yeah we look back at the start of the build sometimes and it is quite fun to see how it's changed, can't wait to have it finished though! We were a little nervous cutting out the fan hole but we'd seen it done like that before and figured it was a pretty tidy way to do it, and actually was pretty straightforward in the end. Think the router is one of our favourite tools now, keep finding new uses for it! 😀
Another great build and the end result looks fantastic. It looked like it was more difficult than you would expect, but you've done a great job.
Can't wait for the next stage.
Thank you! We can't wait for the next stage too 😀
That ceiling looks amazing
Love the little touch with having screw all facing the same way
So glad it's not just me
Cheers! Haha, it seemed rude to not spend a few minutes at the end to turn them all after spending so long putting them up there 😛
Wow, you two are artists at heart.
Haha, thanks 😁
Your ceiling looks amazing and the curve at the front looks really good. This is turning into such a quality build your attention to detail is great, your should be so proud. Looking forward to the next one. Take care and stay safe guys xxx
Thanks Norma! We're happy that the curvy cladding has survived quite a few miles on the road now too 😀 We are proud of what we've built so far, can't wait to have it all finished 😊
The ceiling looks great! I describe the ceiling in my US Transit as “tortured”. The compound curves towards the front are a challenge. Well done.
Thanks! Yeah there are definitely quite a few times we've had interesting challenges thanks to the Transits curves! 😆
Hard work but came up good. Nice job guys
Cheers! Yeah we love how the ceiling turned out 🙂
Well done, it is always handy that the lady of the house is a talented carpenter.
Cheers, we both started at the beginning with pretty much zero experience so it's been fun (if not a lot of work sometimes) to learn all the DIY skills together
Great Video. love the step by step process you guys provide.
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it! 🙂👍
That looks brill well done
Thanks! 🙂
The flashbacks to "ceiling week" for us. We had two apertures to work round with the minibus skylight and Maaxair. We took a week's leave and the ceiling took all week at Easter, the strain on neck and arms was as bad as Abbie says, I'm only 5ft3, and the last few strips at the side/front were horrific to get set in. I was lucky that I cut and stained all the strips in the garden as good weather. We worked round both openings, and spray painted the plastic apertures brown as one was white and the other grey. I think ours looks like a whisky barrel as the stain is a little darker. I love our ceiling but if we do another van it will be a straight one! Everything must take 3x as long filming. Hats off to you both. You work so neatly.
Thanks Fiona! Sounds like you had similar pains getting it up as we did then 😆 Worth it for the end result though 🙂And yeah it does take a while to film and edit, 3x longer is probably about the right ball park! It's nice to look back and see the progress through the videos though so we're glad we're doing it 😊
Great job. Looks amazing
Thanks Kevin! 😊
Ceiling looks awesome! Great work. I'm staining the wood up for our ceiling this week 👏
Ah thanks very much! What colour are you going for?
Judy discoverd your channel. finding it hardto find someone help with electrics, so will have to embark on daunting task. trying to find your first video on step one 😄
Welcome, hope you enjoy the channel! We have a playlist of all the videos in our conversion here right from the first one: ruclips.net/p/PLaS9zgelfoIiMR5RWctgR_vwCkpu-h0t0. There's a few on the electrics in there, yeah it is a daunting task at first, lots to get your head around! But not too bad once you start to get an idea for it, good luck! 👍
Your videos are super helpful! We're in the process of converting a transit as well so it's great seeing how you approach things
Cool, glad they're helpful and good luck with your build 🙂👍
use a bit of saw dust and wood glue mixed together to fill any holes then just give a light sand and stain over
yeah we've done that in a few places actually, works well. But this one it just bothered us not having the screws there 😅
Superb; keep sharing and smiling.
Thank you, and we will!
Well done guys, I like your locking for the detail .
Cheers, it took a while but we're happy with how it turned out :)
Great video as always. I did pause the video as I noticed something in your hair, then continued watching and your husband confirmed it was saw dust haha I did think it was something else at first. Just about to start my roof now, thank you for the great footage I will be following your foot steps.
We often have sawdust everywhere 😛 Thanks a lot and good luck with your build 👍
Great video as always! Great to see more of the interior coming along!
Thank you! :)
Looks amazing. Great team work
Thank you!
Nice job
Thank you 🙂
Loving your van videos guys!
Thank you!
Awesome content guys.
Thank you 🙂
Looking good!
Thanks! 😊
We love your videos!! The cinematography of nature and farm animals is spectacular! I am just about to put up my cieling, I lvery much ike the way yours turned out. Could you please share what were the lengths of the cuts you made in your A and B diagram?
Thank you! 😊 And sure, the B's were 239.5cm and 149.5cm. The A's were 141cm, 150.5cm, and 98cm and that's from the front to the back of the van. It was mostly dictated by where the fixing points were in the ceiling that we could fix a batten to so we could secure each end. Hope yours comes out well, if you haven't done it already by now! 🙂👍
So lovely to hear from you. Today we are making templates for the outside edges. Its been a super challenging project with many mistakes! How long did it take you and how long was the total van build process? Your farm looks so idyllic!
@@larryvito8769 Ah cool, yeah it took a while with all the curves at the front! The ones towards the back were fine and didn't take very long at all to put up, as we had predrilled and countersunk all the screw holes before we started. But the ones at the front took a bit of effort and getting creative using our heads (literally) as props to keep it in shape while we slid them together 😄We did the build over a couple of years but with some big breaks in between too, and would probably say that filming and editing it made it 3-5x longer 😛 Good luck with it!
Well done :-) !
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi there, love your videos and the cladding looks amazing. Is there a particular reason that you used screws instead of a nailgun for the roof cladding?
Cheers! 👍 We avoided using nails anywhere in the van as we much prefer screws. It means we can easily take down any boards we need to for any maintenance/new projects etc (which we've done), and also screws have much better grip strength so with the particularly curvy roof was quite important for us to hold the boards on the curve and not work loose with all the vibrations down the road. The cladding we went for is also just the cheap stuff from Wickes which is quite fragile, so the nice thing about a screw is we can take it slow when fastening them up. With a nailgun there is a chance some of them might break trying to apply the gun and force to pull them around the curves. HTH 🙂
Love it, what lengths where your panels cut at?
Thanks :) And there's quite a few different lengths we used for the configuration. We had an 'A' row of 3 different lengths and a 'B' row of two different lengths, and alternated them. But we basically just made sure the joins would be in good places on the battens on the roof, and that there would be enough length at the front to mould to the curve of the van. HTH!
Hi there, love the videos. It gives me enthusiasm towards my own build. Well done. Can i ask how many packs of wicks cladding did it take to do your ceiling? Thanks
Hey 👋 Thanks, glad you're enjoying them! And we live quite far away from the nearest Wickes so we ended up buying more than we needed just in case, so not sure exactly how many we used for the ceiling. But in total we originally bought 16 packs of the 1800mm and 10 packs of the longer 2400mm (both 8mm x 94mm). That was enough for the ceiling, the bulkhead, and everywhere on the walls we used it, with a fair amount of leftover. Our ceiling is 17 claddings wide if that helps (with one line being split in half for the smaller slivers on each side), and each line is made up of either 2 or 3 bits (ruclips.net/video/UcrIgiBpgNE/видео.html). HTH!
@SelfBuiltStories Thank you so much for the reply. That certainly helps me get an idea of how much I'll need. 👍
@@duncanhaller8340 No problem!
Hello! I'm interested to see how you made the wood panel fixed to the top of the rear doors at 11:35! Thanks
Hello! No problem, we made it all in the previous video here: ruclips.net/video/DTzaAh7on4c/видео.htmlsi=KmKPgv3ESa_MS9Xz&t=751 🙂👍
Great videos guys .. just one question ..where sis you manage to convert your van ? I don't have much space where I live
Thank you, we are fortunate to have enough space to keep it outside where we are. We do quite a lot of work right by the van under the awning, as long as the weather is not too bad
Hey guys, loving the videos. We are doing our build at the moment but nowhere near to your high standards!! Just been looking for your drill sander bit, the round one, on Amazon but not having much luck. Where can I get it?
Cheers! And if you search for 'rotary drum sander' you should find the same kind of thing, www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=rotary+drum+sander. These ones look pretty much the same as the set we have: www.amazon.co.uk/Sanding-Sander-Sleeves-Drums-Drills/dp/B07P86SL9M/. HTH 👍🙂
@@SelfBuiltStories you are amazing, thank you so much!
No problem 👍
We are looking at how many packs we need for the ceiling, we have the same van as you. Can you please advise. We are also looking at the wickes panels. Whichs sizes dis you get and how many packs please

Can I please ask what colour/product you used? It looks great 👍
Sure (and thanks!), we used Amber tinted Osmo Polyx Oil and then their semi-matte for the second coat. Really nice stuff to use 🙂
@@SelfBuiltStories Thanks for that. I really enjoy your videos... You two seem so down to earth... keep it up! 😀
No problem! And thank you, glad you're enjoying them, we will try 🙂
I think you were running the router the wrong direction...
Hey thanks for the heads up, you've led us to learn about the difference between a push and a climb cut 👍😁
:)
Thanks for watching!
