So many great Iommi solos, but my favourites are those in ‘Lonely is the Word’ and ‘Over and Over’ - both so melodic and so epic.

Great selections! Love the Wheels of Confusion intro. Another of my top 5 would be its outro, which I believe is called The Straightener.

Yes Darin! Was wondering if it the solo on Dirty Woman would be listed. Agree word for word! It’s an incredible solo and my favourite part of the song. It’s the first BS solo that comes to mind. Very emotional and epic.

Favorite solo = the noisy Amp Squealing 20 minute lead from the best Black Sabbath album Live At Last. Other than the solo Ted Nugent struggled through on the Prodigal Man from the Live Survival of the Fittest by the ultimate Metal band Amboy Dukes. Both are as rugged, noisy and as garage as it gets.
Best Lead = Sabbath Bloody Sabbath just before the crescendo

So here's the thing for me John. I think, I think...Iommi is a way way better solo player than Jimmy Page or Even Blackmore ....Yes they do have better solos, and Iommi isn't a soloist or a Shredder...but here's the thing ... His Live performances are way more consistent and most rock guitar players, what you get on tape /Cd is what you get live... its brilliant ...
And also, he's basically a blues player, but the way all his solos are phrased and the context he plays it in (the riffs) is as good as anyone, if not better...
Well, I saw your choice... so here's my take... While I love most of his solos...
Here are mine - Some honorable mentions first...
Killing yourself to live (the bloody whole song is a guitar solo, one it kicks in!)
Born To Lose- Another forgotten solo from a forgotten album but no doubt brilliant...
Johnny Blade/ Junior's Eye's/ Air dance/ Shock Wave- I'll just club these together, you know what I mean, there's so much going on in each... and Junior's eyes is so emotional ...Dirty Women, You won't change me... heaven and hell... The Warning...i could go on...anyway... I am sure I am forgetting a few...!
    5. Over & Over- Its just so emotional
    4. Planet Caravan- Has to be there, its not pentatonic! Its Jazz! Its so trippy! Nothing like he ever did before or after maybe Zeitgeist but that was a very reserved version of it...
    3. Black Sabbath- A classic early bluesy Iommi solo- with all kinds of chuck berry and Hendrix nuances but so differently put...again the context!!! I would maybe add war pigs here in the same league
    2. Under the Sun- Outro solo- I really can't explain it makes me cry this solo....
    1. Die Young Live Intro solo wacken/ And all the fills and the outro solo...
Now this solo has evolved over the years in the 1989 version ruclips.net/video/ULzQ62B5q-w/видео.html (goto 0.55 what's that lick it sounds like malmsteen!!)

When you mention Iommi being better soloing live than Page or Blackmore, what are you comparing? Are you talking particular live releases or are you comparing live performances that you’ve personally witnessed?
Blackmore would improvise solos live and not stick to exactly reproducing the solos on the studio version.
There aren’t a lot of official live recordings of Zeppelin but I can’t think you have seen much of Page live?

@@jimmycampbell78 Consistency of performances. Improvisation is great, but never consistent as Neil Peart said. Just pure consistency. No wankery!
