- Stars are the first thing you see on Football Manager. They are the welcoming equivalent of an overall rating as you wade into the very deep pool of being addicted to FM. Then over time, you should learn a very valuable lesson. The stars lie to you. The stars deceive you. Potential ability is what your eyes and attributes tell you it should be, not some random staff member.
I had a consummate example of this on my team with Taunton Town. A legend named Nick McCootie. A player who was never regarded highly in his star rating given by my staff, but a player who fit my tactic perfectly and performed insanely well given the situations Football Manager threw at him.
Much Love,
FM Senpai

This happens in real life too like Graham Arnold sticking with Mitch Duke in the World Cup for his work rate and physicality despite having two more prolific goalscorers in the Australia squad.
Free cumdog
Man this video is exactly what happened last year with “the legend” Tom Denton! Came down to non-league and was smashing 2-3 goals a game in the same system lol
Duke >> Cummings and Maccas
Bro I love you for bringing up Mitch Duke the Goat in Zealand comments
@@KFR an australian in Zealand's comment lol
I remember me in FM19 VNLS signing a free agent 36 yo left back called Kieran Nicholson. He had 2.5 stars in his position, he was slow af, but what amazed me was his +15 free kicks, penalties, long throws and crossing attributes. At some point his star rating even dropped to 2 stars. I stayed with him being the starter LB in defense role and he ended season with 7 goals and 11 assists in league being our best player, nearly getting us promoted. I begged him to stay, but he retired next season, always being remember by me
It's just so satisfying when you get a player like that, you feel like a true manager discovering a hidden gem. In my Leicester career, I signed Ladislav Almási from the Czech more or less midtable side Baník Ostrava, because I liked that he's extremely tall but still kinda technical. The board and fans both gave me an F for the transfer, but he ended up turning into Jan Koller 2.0 and became a two-time Champions League top goalscorer 😂 Just like you said, the most important thing with strikers is simply if they fit your tactics and vision, both in fm and in real life.
I also bought Almási highly recommend everyone gets him. I'm managing St Pauli, got him for under a million and in his first season he broke the Bundesluga 2 goal scoring record and for the last 5 years has been in top handful of Bundesliga goalscorers even though we are fighting for relegation most years.
I got him to replace Lorenzo Lucca in a Pisa save I had. Sold Lucca for 80 mil and got him for a mil. Back to back 30 goal seasons in Serie A and sold for 40 mil.
I mean he's a beast irl too, I have no idea how it's possible that Baník are still keeping him. I can see him doing big things later in his career if he finds a team that fits him.
Laco almasi is our gem in Baník. I play FM23 for Baník, but Almasi immediately left to England. So I used secondary ST in club Jiří Klíma. In Real life he is pretty bad. But in the game, he turned into the beast winning Europen golden boot every year 😂 He can score hattrick every game, Its so ridiculous 😂
@@ButchHudson Klíma scored a great goal against Sparta, though! 😂
Totally get this. Arran Muir was regarded as "a decent league two" player in my Championship team. He scored 23 goals and helped us to promotion. His stats aren't amazing (especially for that level) but the guy can finish better than most and it's all we need him to do.
definitely. Do not go on what the game tells you 100%! Trust your own instinct and go from there. I had a guy in norway who was very quick and had good acceleration and finishing. he was a striker/winger. The game was obsessed with telling me he's a winger. But a winger who can't cross?! I tried him up front and he disappeared out of games, I tried him occasionally as a winger just to tire out opponents and then i thought 'what if I retrain him as a shadow striker to use that pace and give him time to be flying at defenders with his pace late into the box. Yes. It worked lol
It's so satisfying when you get it right!
Should also be mentioned that current form can massively impact your player's star rating. I've had plenty situations where a player on good form goes into bad form, and loses a star in like 2 months - despite attributes not changing at all.
I had a similar thing with my Cliftonville save in 22, sticking with Ryan Curran and Joe Gormley despite having better alternatives, because they were such clutch goalscorers in spite of their below-average attributes. Those two dragged a semi-professional side to a Europa League round of 32.
Nick McCootie was the star of my very first FM game ever with Bath FC.
Carried me up two divisions and kept scoring for me even then.
Similar point - I won the champions League with Michael Obafemi from Swansea up front in my save, just because he had the work rate, pace and composure that I wanted from my advanced forward
Obafemi is good tbf
It can work both ways . Zealand talking about shooting with power . I bought a guy who had the trait . One on ones he was next to useless. You Don’t need to burst the ball with how hard you hit it every time . I had to train it out of him ! He had technique and composure but his previous manager had obviously told him he needed to twat it every time lol
This video has really made me look at players differently. Which is great because im mad new lmao. Thank you for this !
Jake Young was a player I bought in my Wrexham game, never got more than 3-ish stars and hovered closer to 2 for a majority of the play through. He just captained my championship side through promotion and is my favorite signing of all time at $54k from forest green. Just makes the game so much more fun with these hidden gems
Something similar happened to me with Daniel James on a Manchester United in FM 20. For the entire time he was on the team he never got higher than a 3-star rating but he was the leading goal scorer for the team multiple times.
I'm sick of telling people that stars don't mean what they think they mean.
EDIT: This was a supremely good video teaching things that people absolutely don't typically think about. I shared it in a group I'm in.
Nick Mccootie is cracked in FM, even in FM2019 he easily gets top scorer in the league
He's probably a cheat player, older managers are full of them u just need to find them.
There are some things that seem to never change with FM that go all the way back to the CM days, which is if a player has limited Current Ability and only the right attributes for a role, he does better than a player with a better Current Ability. It's like they have less options as a player and concentrate on what they're good at.
I think CA has more positive bearing than it used to 20 years ago. However, I still think that if your player is low CA for your level but has the right attributes, they'll overperform. Plus, I think they design the database so you see far fewer guys who are good at one or two things because they're overpowered.
@@Azizi1163 mateus bastos was a player like that until 2023 or i am wrong about his nerf.
Todd Boehly would dump 100M on McCootie if he saw that goals comp
This reminds me, when I wanted to go from the lowest English League to Premier League with Bath, I had a player whom was 5 stars in the beginning, but once we hit premier league he was like a half star… yet, he was my highest performing player. So I let him keep playing, until he got a long term injury, and I gave him a fair shot of coming back into the lineup but alas, the dust had worn off. That’s what I love about FM. Sometimes it’s a matter on how the player just synergies with the team, tactics, management, etc. that just clicks and then they just perform… despite FM doesn’t change a huge ton annually, it still has significant depth and nuance to the game and a shitton under the hood. It’s amazing.
I'm currently playing with Besiktas, and in 2024, my 19 year old striker (Semih Kilicsoy) who spent his last year on loan in the 4th Turkish division and had a CA of 105 at the time, ended up scoring 65 goals across all leagues, and 42 in the Turkish süperlig, breaking the Turkish all time record and winning him the European golden boot ahead of Mbappé and Haaland. That's the most crazy thing I've ever seen. Two years later he's still my best player even though his CA is still much lower than anybody's in the entire squad and his value is barely 10 milion euros.
I have him up front for my Aberdeen save, he's been scoring like 60 goals per season in all competitions. Not bad for 50k
can we just say what a marvelous tactic Zealand has rather than a typical formation
playing something like this tactic since beta and manage to get from vanarama south to championship .... in championship working hard and atletics is not enough to keep clean sheets , athetic attackers tho contnue to get long direct passes from almost defence and continue to score on counter
Had the same in FM2020 with Tonbridge Angels. Jayden Antwi was the lowest star forward in the team, but had to play due to injuries. He just wouldn't stop scoring. He then tallied up 38 goals in 49 games, after which the Assistant Manager said I shouldn't renew his contract as he's not good enough! Obviously I ignored that. Funnily enough - and I hadn't noticed this before - he also has SHOOTS WITH POWERRRRRR!!!
Thanks Z, I think this is the best video you’ve made when it comes to explaining how to think in an FM way!!!
Matt Dolan was the same for me, bought for Dundee from Newport in fm 21 and was consistently a 7.6 across the season as a defensive midfielder with loads of goals and assists from freekicks as well, I've bought him every year since
This is like Kyle Hudlin for my Solihull Moors team last season. At 6’7+, and as a natural Target Forward, he just kept scoring as we got to the Premier League and the stats that always increased every season were Finishing, Work Rate, Off the Ball and Teamwork. Don’t know why but as they increased, he went from beating Robert Sanchez in the Championship to getting a double vs Ederson in a 4-3 win vs City.
not really the same at all lol
This reminds me of one of my CM 03-04 saves. I was managing Farnborough Town. We had one player upfront who probably would've been 5th choice, if he wasn't banging in a couple of goals every game. Won the league with him.
I start the following pre-season with some friendlies against non-league opponents/easy wins at home to keep morale up. Playing against Marine, and their striker tears us apart. Well, I didn't know who he was, and he didn't seem that special. But he didn't miss a shot, and I'd learnt once already to trust my gut, so I sign him on the cheap. The pair of them together were unstoppable, bagging 30 goals a season each, as they fired us all the way to the PL. To this day, I'll maintain that Potter and Somerville were the best strike pairing I've ever had, and any time I go back to the game, they're the first two players I sign.
I used to have a huge hang up over playing players in their perfect positions until last year when I used Sotiris Alexandropoulos as a libero. Now, I’ll play anyone in any role as long as I think they can do it
Happened to me with Marc Cordona back when he was a youth in Barca, signed him in my Koln career, won the 2nd division and the bundesliga title straight after with him as the top scorer
Taunton? They have the last service station on the motorway, we always stop there!
Taunton is my non league to legend save as I live in Devon. McCootie was my back up striker in season 1 to Martell Taylor-Crossdale. MTC scored 29 in 34. McCootie got 21 in 18, including two hatricks and one against Torquay in the league above. Sims-Burgess also has bad ratings yet got 15 assists and 14 goals as an inverted winger.
I’ve found the lower rated players often out perform 4-5 star players, this was true of my Blackburn save too.
imagine being named nick mccootie lmao
I'm playing a network save with Dulwich Hamlet and Danny, Danny Miiiiiiiills is an absolute beast. Love that man.
Hes genuinely insane, scored 40 goals in 41 games in the first season for me
@@1uca670 I've got him next to a pacey AF, he's picking up almost as many assists as he is goals!
Speaking of eye test... the best striker I ever used, was not even the best striker on the team at the time in terms of attributes. But the way he played, the way he was opening counterattacks was incredible, the passing range and accuracy, dude would absolutely blow my mind every other game, usually by being involved in the build-up play for a goal...he was scoring like 10-15 goals per season too, but his ability to make his striking partner look better was like nothing I have seen before or since
Glad to see this, bought Sean Roughan for Norwich just as a stop gap left back till Giannoulis got fit, 2 stars despite being good IRL, but you wouldn't know it cause he's been one of my favourite players
100% agree. I'm with Sheffield F.C getting them from the 9th tier to L1 so far, and I've upgrading most positions along the way apart from one of my strikers who is now in his 4th Season. Real player called Alex Hutchinson. 2 stars where most of my other player are 3 - 3.5 stars, with the odd 4 star. He's tall, strong, has reasonable finishing, but he just can't stop scoring. 20+ goals each season. But because he's so good in the air, he's great for flick-ons and set pieces. I daren't sell or drop him.
I also did a Taunton save, Jay Foulston and Lee Lucas were big players in gaining promotion for me, Nick McCootie however I sold right away😬😂 but will definitely take a new approach to FM after this video!
In fm20 I played with anderlecht. Youth prospect striker, mohammed guindo 19 pace and accelaration 16 finish and the other stat were decent. Played him 1 time because of injurries and red card. 3 goals. From that moment on he was a regular starter and he had 1 stat ca and 2 star pa. What a guy
Love how Zealand has players from my save in his team rn
I live in Taunton this is cool to see someone doing a save on them
In previous versions Odion Ighalo was the beast in same situation. Winning golden boot with 2.5 stars. He out scored Ronaldo & Messi for many years.
Thanks for the tips. I saw who gave their opinion on the player stats but I couldn't find the setting to who to give the opinion. Also, even my manager has high player knowledge seems like totally useless as the star-rating is based on whoever that gave his opinion...
Player knowledge affects the how much of a players attributes you see when using attribute masking I think. So with better knowledge you know more about players prior to scouting them.
It's current and potential ability judging that dictate how accurate the stars will be, which isn't too accurate at all, and certainly nowhere near as accurate as what Zealand called 'the eye test'. Just get them out there on the training pitch, reward the ones who train well with game time, drop the ones who train badly, keep doing that the whole time, and from doing that you will eventually get to know who the useful players are and aren't in your squad. Forget about stars. Play the players who work hard through the week, and play them in positions which seem to best match up to their attributes and traits.
Us FM players we spend so much time making fun of fifa with it's overalls and it's simplicity, yet we run to the most simplest, most basic and least useful method of judging how useful a player will be for us that we can find.
TAUNTON TOWN IS MY LOCAL! Get in Zee lad!
I turned a 130 PA Luca Wollschläger into the greatest player to ever touch Belgian fields simply by building an entire strategy around him dominating the air.
FM21 I had striker, which was 2.5 star player. That guy slammed goal(s) practically in every match I allowed him to start. Tried to "replace" him for years with 4-5 star players, none of them ever (even if stats were all around better) managed to be as good/reliable as that 2.5 star guy, which scored us to couple championships and cup wins. So after that I kind of stopped being obsessed about having full line up of 4-5 star players. To this day I'm not fully sure why he was so good though, in my headcanon he just had perfect mentality.
great video , im finding same i got a 4/5 star striker yes he does score for tonbridge angels but a 2 star yng lad called louis collins a very PROFESSIONAL player is 18 and hes banging them home
Yes, I had my record breaking goalscorer with 2-2,5 stars in Vanarama South with 59 goals all season. He was a beast in both the league and the cups. The name is Jack Stainrod BTW.
Same for me and my Schalke Save, wehre I spend 4Mil on Walemark from Feyenoord. 4 Years into the game, He is now rated at 2.5 Stars (won the Bundesliga thanks to bad Bayern) but hes still on par or even perorming better as Players with 4 Stars :)
In my admittedly limited experience with this game, I played a save of 3 and a bit seasons with Stirling, in Scotland. Had a 2 star striker named Owen Moffat who just... scored everything in spite of the game trying to convince me on its knees that he wasn't good enough to be in the first team. XD
Josh Sargent in my Leeds save. Hardwork, pressing, completely stamped out DCL from the team scoring 30 goals
it's unfortunate you spoiled the season end for us live channel watchers
Marc Guiu, a standard league one player for me, had a 20 goal season in the prem and is already on 12 this season in Jan
i live in and support the peacocks and really nice to see Mcootie get a mention, even if it is only a game lol
Very similar player in my save is Kyle Hudlin. By far the worst player according to stars but is consistently my top scorer. He's 6ft9" and just spanks them in from everywhere with every part of his body
Had this with yuriel celi on fm22, won 5 portugese titles in a row and he was easily our worst playwr attricutes wise but got an average rating of like 7.5 or above every season
I was watching Nick playing for Weston-super-Mare last season, so this video is wild to me
Reminding me of Moneyball's he gets on base scene with the works hard tall athletic lol
had this with kayle price at golcar, 58 goals in one season at 1.5 stars
(side note, he’s 5’3” with 1 jumping reach, which i think might have influenced it)
I’m relatively new to fm yet I decided to play it with my friends in a network game I picked chesterfield and oh my god Tshimanga was so unbelievabley good in his first season he got over 60 goals he still plays regularly enough but I bought a new striker in Kyle hudlin who is a giant to stick all of my corners and set pieces on.
I like the idea of this setup any chance to find this tactic somewhere to download? I would love to check it.
That'd be an interesting experiment - what star ratings are given by staff of varying "judging player ability/potential" ratings. If someone has 1 for both judging ability and potential, how much worse are they than someone with 20? Does it actually make a significant difference in terms of judging your own players as well as judging players not at the club? Does it affect just the players the recommend or do they just become clueless with star ratings? My guess is that the difference would be much smaller than you'd expect - maybe half a star at most.
I had an atletic striker with the trait shoot with power in FM12. He just couldn't stop skyrocketting the ball even 3 yards away from the goal, so I benched him and never used such a guy again in the last 10 years.
But maybe I had just bad luck... lol
I had a 1 star 42 year old score 42 goals in 30 games and break all sorts of records then retired haha after picking up player of the season for the league , club and top scorer for league and club
I played with AIK in Sweden a youth player had 1,5 stars, all my strikers got covid (mod) so I had to use him, he scored a hat-trick, after that he was my starting striker and got 3rd in the internal goal scorers list (in just half the games as the rest of the squad)
I know nobody plays in wales, but Mike Williams for Llangefni is an absolute STUD. Once a 5 star rating, he is now only 2.5 in the premiership and is still averaging a quality 7.8. It baffles me how much better he is than my new 4-star CBs. A jumping reach of 17 and not being an absolute moron gets you pretty far in Welsh football!
I played in Wales, really enjoyed it. Won back to back titles with Bala before leaving to join Linfield in Ireland
Here's an interesting question. If you replace your assistant with someone of 20 Judging Ability, does it still show ~2 stars?
Probably there or thereabouts, honestly
com o tempo talvez sim, tem a questão de adaptabilidade no clube
I think the star ratings only really relate to the hidden CA/PA numbers. McCootie is extremely one footed and has terrible balance/composure, which suggests low CA. A better Judging Ability attribute will only tell you more accurately that he has a lower CA, not that the reason he has a low CA may not cause him to actually play badly.
@@bruceylike9666 They definitely also relate to the quality of the team and league though. Overall McCootie isn't as good as the others (that's why he's ~2 star), but Z has figured out how to use the strengths that make him different and hide his glaring weaknesses. That shooting trait is doing a lot of work too.
I don’t know if anyone has commented this but if you hover over the stars it tells you what that means relative to your first team.
Nick McCootie is a proof that stars doesn't matter as long as he keep his good form and being consistent then he can help achieve something. Let's see how he can play against National League and tried to get us promoted to the English Football League.
This same thing happened to me with kelsey mooney and Leamington where in league two he is one star 🌟 and scored 25 goals
You shouting McCootie is class! Sod if he’s world class 🎉
This guy is absolutely bonkers, but easy to watch. 😆
He was Taunting the defence.
I love to play Jordon Ibe in polish league or even better championship teams, he's 2 (somethimes 2 and a half) stars but the always provides a lot of goals and assists
Shaun Okojie is my Mcootie.
He scored 4 against the peacocks 🦚
1.5 stars 40 leauge goals and 11 assists
This message needs repeating
This happened to me with Arsenal, Jesus got injured and then Nketiah scored 23 goals in the second half of the season to win us the league.
Hamlet legend, Danny Mils 😍
I had a 2* striker score 30+ goals for me as Chelmsford City, Mikhail Kennedy, assistant manager kept telling me to drop him before every match, despite being top scorer.
You can tell it isn’t objective either by looking at the analyst report and scouting report. Usually different in ratings
Anderson was my best man utd player . Very single football manager . But they refused to give him the Ballon
We all knew McCootie was gonna get his own video 😂
Elvar Mani Gudmundsson out of the 2 tier of Iceland helped me gain promotion with Treaty United and won me the league title in the third season. Ridiculous finishing ability at this level.
Hey Z, good video but as someone who's only watching the Peacocks on youtube it was pretty frustrating having the rest of the season spoilt without warning
Sam I didn’t think of this because the schedule was altered after recording, I want you to know I am really sorry about that, rest of it is out tomorrow
@@ZealandonYT yeah of course and I'm sure things have been crazy with all the WC vids, just thought I'd say in case there was anything you could do and just for future reference, I can at least be excited for Taunton now :)
Nick McCootie ist back!
Zealand I have a Question: Is there a way to see the top 100-500 goal scorers of all time or top 100 active goal scorers /assists in game anywhere? PES 2012 used to have this feature on a 3DS game, it seems odd that a game with all these stats, doesn't have a sheet/page that just lists all the top scorers of all time.
* Is this something we can mod?
NICK MCSHOOTIE MASTERCLASS
Michael cheek in my Bromley save is scoring 30 + goals a season
This is like Todorov in 2003 :)
Spoilers for Zealand Live watchers. One stream too early. ;)
Signing a player based purely off attributes who becomes a huge success will always be the most rewarding thing in FM.
I remember a few years ago in my Portsmouth save after getting them to the prem signing a Márton Dárdai who hadn't fulfilled his potential from AZ at the age of 24. He came in to be my wide centre back in a back 3 on account of his long passing ability and interceptions which he would make during the counter press high up the field. Season long loan with a 2.1 million option to buy probably one of the best signings I've done in FM.
Played super well for us keeping us in the division until that Prem money came rolling in and we could truly upgrade the squad.
got a few 2 to 3 star players at AIK won 2 Champions Leagues in a row.
As a fm player for like the last couple of years, I really struggle with seeing the difference between a GOOD player and a GREAT player. Is there a way you can make a video where you compare sort of similar players and explain why the one would be worth 40 mil while the other might not even be worth it to take.
Hey, have similar struggles, would be really happy if there was a video for that
Brilliant taunton town are my local team
In my Chesthunt save, I got Linton in my 2nd season and he scored 55 goals in Vanarama National despite being 2,5 stars and significantly worse than my other strikers. 15 acc and pace, 13 work rate but other that that he's quite garbage and he's also short..can't see what made him score so many goals.
I wonder if this would work with a player who has a current ability of 1?
Ye this happened to me I got endrick at 2 stars to sporting and he is after scoring 33 goals in all competition
great video!
Have this most of my time with BWM, always rather play them with great performances than looking at the stars. It's mostly my 2,5* player, playing better than the superstar player who just averages a 6,8 over the season. Also got a same situation with goncalo ramos as a PF right now. decent attributes but nothing special. In form he's a 3*-4* player, out of form, he's just a 2,5*, but most of the season he's just banging in those crucial goals.
I think with a BWM you can go for a lower star player, as there are not many key attributes that need to be high, and it is ok if he is a 1.5 or 2 star if he is a one trick pony with like 16-18 in all attributes needed to take the ball from the opponent.
@@lisaruhm6681 yeah sure, but doesn't this goes for every position?
Even if the star BWM has better key attributes he's not performing well. I dunno maybe it is my tactic after all. Star ratings are always useful but just don't decide your starting eleven purely on them. Gotta go with your guts sometimes.
@@PESandNHL yeah, consistency and also big matches hidden attributes play their part too. What I mean was, that in some positions where only a couple of attributes are very important a overall worse player can be better in a specific position.
If I had a dime for every time I overpaid por a player because he was 4 stars or something... Just to find out he plays like crap in my system.
6'6" and 220? Kargbo is an absolute unit
Great video but please can we go easy on the camera movements?
If your in a top league try Beto for this. He’s competing with Halland in goals.
Is there a way to change who provides the position/role/duty ability report in the tactics screen or is it always the assistant manager's responsability?
Stars dont mean jack... many times ive had very low rated players be great. it's basically a way of min/maxing but instead of RPGs or slashers you're identifying the crucial attributes you need for a certain role, finding a hidden gem that has those attributes then nurturing them, adding traits and get them playing the right way and you will get performances out of players most wouldnt consider are good. one of my favourite things on the game is to find cheap hidden gems and turn them into premier league regulars.
you cant trust stars in lower leagues because you have crap scouts that give you the stars rating .....also wage and comparison with other players in the club are part of the start value....this video should be 1 minute not more ;P
Actually, I think the "lob keeper" trait does the same thing as shoot with power. Just, you know, the opposite. ;)
