Over in England the small market town of Wooten Basset used to turn out to line the route of the dead returning. The Queen was so touched by this that she bestowed the title of Royal on the town. It's now Royal Wooten Basset.
I served in our military, and one day my youngest brother called me saying he was on his way back to Toronto, and happened to be right behind the procession of cars in a convoy returning the body of one of our fallen. He was in tears as he described the people along the route all standing at attention, some waving flags, but all showing respect.... I told him that this is whats being a Canadian is about...and it is..
Kastrenzo74, The Government is doing what's in the country's best interest. You got to think of it from his perspective, id imagine a job like his probably isnt the easiest. Politics are never that easy. If you dont stand behind harper than still stand behind the Country and what Canada stands for; your not cynical for saying that. I think it's good that people critic the goverment, thats a right that you have as a canadian and ultimately builds a better country. Just don't mix up what the government stands for from what your country stands for.
I maybe a proud Canadian and have a huge respect for the Canadian Military but that extends to the American Military as well. My boyfriend was a Sergeant in the US Army (he’s now Retired). Both country’s troops have one thing in common, they fight and sacrifice themselves for their country so that they can keep us safe. They’ve seen indescribable horrors that we can only begin to fathom and we won’t know what those truly are until we’ve experienced them for ourselves. They are our heroes. They paid their price for freedom. May God watch over them, protect them, and keep them safe. For those who died in combat while serving, they died a hero’s death. They died by fighting for us and protecting our freedom. May God continue to watch over them in Heaven. Thank you to all of the men and women who have served or are continuing to serve our countries. Thank you for continuing to fight for our freedom to protect us and keep us safe. Thank you for sacrificing your lives for us. Whether you’re in the Canadian or American Military, you are all the true heroes.
regardless of my opinion on politics and policies in the USA...thank you MSNBC for this segment, and to those from the US who have posted positive comments. It does not go unnoticed. I am a damn fucking proud Canadian and thank the 2 man, most recently, and the many more who have given their life for this country...my country, my home. we may only need 2/3s of your flags colours, but...im sorry (hey, im a canadian) we have twice as much heart n pride. Oh Canada, My Canada.
Yesterday, a sad, sick, deceived man did evil at the Ottawa soldier's memorial, and tried to attack parliament. Our thoughts must be with the family of the murdered soldier.
I could watch this 1,000 times and still shed tears for a Mothers loss, the Soldiers loss serving his country with pride and bravery. RIP soldier, God bless you Mother.
This may be from 2008, but we had to do it again last week in 2014 for Cpl. Nathan Cirillio, shot in back twice by a terrorist wannabe while he was standing guard over the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier at the Canadian War Memorial in our Capital Ottawa. He was the second soldier killed last week by wannbe terrorists, Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, a 28-year serving member was killed in hit and run in a parking lot at Sainte-Jean, Quebec, he was buried on Nov.1.
I remember a few years ago it had snowed and i was going to my sisters to plough her driveway with my ATV,, I came to a bridge on the highway of heros and there wer 4 very old vets trying to shovel the banks that the snowplough had pushed up against the guard rails, I ask them what was going on ,,they looked exhausted , they said they were waiting for a soldier to come by, I took my snow plough and cleaned it out for them, on my way back there were about 15 men there all in uniform holding there flags up high
i live in ontario i am so proud to have the highway of heros everytime somebody that supportes my country i go and watch that just shows that i support them
If I could I'd stand on one of those bridges... unfortunately it would be one solitary Stars and Stripes in the sea of Maple Leafs.... They died in defence of MY country. This Yank will always be grateful.
+Andrew Oriez There are more than you can possibly know that stand on that highway. The last I looked Canada was still part of the North American Continent. Have stood on that road twice. It is hard.
grant manewal Good... and I wasn't implying anything other then the fact that as a country we forget that other countries have sacrificed on our behalf.
I saw a cool thing driving the other night (Sep 14), a local fire hall had "September 11th, Never Forget" on it's marquee. We honour American tragedies too.
It's beyond me ignorant that someone could vote negative for this. How can you not feel heartbroken for all the lives lost and respect for all the men, women and children who showed their love and support for the fallen heroes who protected our freedoms. Whoever you are that did that you make me sick
yes we have our "highway of heroe's" here, our small way of saying thanks those who served and paid the ultimate price. May all soldiers who have died for our freedom, both American and Canadian all - R.I.P :(
North Bay has it's own Highway of Heroes. It's Highway 11. And it was lined solid for fifteen miles the day Sergeant Martin Goudreault was brought home. Soldiers, Veterans, Cadets, First Responders, and just plain civilians wanting to say "Thank You"
I didn't know that! Great to hear that other regions are setting up the same thing. We are kind of just outside of the hwy of heroes but we had the terrible 'privilege' to be able to stand for Nathan when he went through our city.
We just had a vertan return home 3 days after rememberance day. I felt my city was grieving but 1000 showed up and 1000 of people miles away stood on the bridges. One thing that makes us Canadians is we stand by what's right and respect the ones who fight for us
It warms my heart and gives me solace in the face of unimaginable loss that the mother of a young private lost in combat takes comfort from her fellow citizens showing up to pay respects and recognition to one of their own. I wish everyone a peaceful and reflective Remembrance Day.
Canada is a nation ALL nations can follow are a teacher of how to honer your hero's coming back from home for the last time . Signed by an American Vet !!!
They willingly fight and die so none of you have to. "March no more my soldier laddie, for for there is peace where there once was war. Sleep in peace my soldier laddie. Sleep in peace now the battle is over."
We were asked to go to Afghanistan by their government. If you don't want to stand behind our troops then feel free to stand in front of them. Canada, Forever Proud.
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old, age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn, at the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will, remember them
The bridges / overpasses are maybe the 'coolest' thing. There are dozens of them along the length of the Highway of Heroes, and it is regular everyday folk that fill them all along the way. The family of the fallen soldier is often in the parade of vehicles. We know when one is coming because the 3-4 lanes of traffic are closed. The Highway of Heroes has signs all its length. It is 175 km long and stretches from Canadian Forces Base Trenton to the morgue in Toronto. In the end, a very, very small gesture, and really not all that hard to organize and respect. Thank you, fallen heroes.
Tears just tears, RIP guys, thank you for your sacrifice, God bless Canada & death to all who defy her and attempt to hurt her citizens & allies. Tears.
I wear a poppy proudly every day of the year for our troops, it's the least I can do. Nothing would make me happier than joining their ranks someday and being a part of our proud military history.
we love our country and its people more than words can ever convey, and the loss of but one of our hero's effects us all in ways that are difficult to express except in pride and unity, we are as one.
We honor our fallen soldiers on the highway of Hero's because the fallen soldiers fought to make other people's lives better and because of that I'm proud I'm Canadian
So often we drive a wedge between us but if we can all stop once in a while and each swallow our pride, we will come to realize that we can learn so much from each other. Thinking about my brother from another mother to the south. Peace ✌
Too bad they left out the initial 'ramp' ceremony in Kandahar for the fallen soldier. Incredibly moving. Standing ramrod straight on the tarmac as a civilian behind our military men and women listening to the bag pipes, watching his mates load him(them) onto a C130 for the ride home...never felt so Cdn as I did on that far away tarmac.
I'm so proud to be a Canadian. Regardless of our leader, regardless of whatever social issues are going on, we're a resilient group of strong people. We always get back up and support each other.
I have always felt so proud that Canada honoured their dead soldiers. We wait hours by the road just to salute them and thank them for their sacrifice. It has always sickened me that the Bush/Rumsfeild/Cheney team made it a law that not one of the almost 5000 soldiers in the USA that lost their lives fighting for freedom were allowed a public ceremony, because it would draw too attention to the creepy, evil, greedy leader Cheney.....evil personafied!!
That is awesome! Thank you to our brothers and sisters in the great white nort called Canada. Its sad that your brothers and sisters to the south are plagued with too many bleeding heart liberals who are anti this and anti that to the point that one needs an act of congress or the will of God to do simple, honorable deeds like this. Semper Fi from a U.S. Marine.
I hate traveling the 401, AKA Highway 401, AKA Highway of Heros, because it makes me sad to think that many soldiers have returned on the 401 in caskets, while I hate it, I would like to see one someday to send off a fellow Canadian, I wish we didn't have to fight this war on Terrorism
I am Canadian. And I love my neighbours to the south. Never had a single person do anything wrong to me in the USA. light ribbing. Some jokes all around. The USA is the Greatest country on Earth.
For 100 miles, people wait. Summer, winter, regardless. . 100 miles of bridges and roadway where people honour our fallen and show the families that we care. We appreciate their sacrifice and bring every hero home the same way ruclips.net/video/7vVvw6KCJjg/видео.html
I often think how Americans should do this as well. I watch videos of that crazy wbc protests and it makes me sick. I would think something like those would be louder than their hate...

Salute to all the men and women who had served in the Canadian Army. Condolence from your Alaskan brother.
Gees Alaskan ? you are more like us than the rest of the states, and thank you sir.
Your welcome too we feel a special kinship since both us live in the coldest place in the world.
Over in England the small market town of Wooten Basset used to turn out to line the route of the dead returning. The Queen was so touched by this that she bestowed the title of Royal on the town. It's now Royal Wooten Basset.
I'm proud to share a continent with this great nation. Long may the U.S. and Canada be friends!
As a Canadian I'm proud to be an ally to the USA, I'm ready to lay my life to protect the USA and our democracy value.
I served in our military, and one day my youngest brother called me saying he was on his way back to Toronto, and happened to be right behind the procession of cars in a convoy returning the body of one of our fallen. Canada, I salute you in the way you honor your heroes.
As a Canadian, I salute you sir, for being so genuinely kind.
+Len Martin Thank you Mr. Martin. greetings and hello from Jakarta, Indonesia.
I'm Canadian and this brings tears to my eyes! Beautiful tribute
Same here
RIP to my cousin Aaron E Williams. KIA by an IED on April 8th, 2008
God Bless this country. I will lay down my life for this great nation.
lay down your life for harper more like.
Sorry to be cynical but I'm really not as proud of my country as I used to be.

Proud to be a Canadian. This is what it's all about. We go through rough times together.
its nice to see a big american broadcast company recognize the Canadian Military and their fallen soldiers
Well, the reporter is actually a Canadian, who came across this when driving down this highway to visit his parents.
Yesterday, a sad, sick, deceived man did evil at the Ottawa soldier's memorial, and tried to attack parliament. Our thoughts must be with the family of the murdered soldier.

Not a, "hit and run" it was cold blooded murder.
To Col. Nathan and all Canadians who were taken down the Highway to their final rest, all love and blessings from me and all Americans!
I’ve watched this a few times a year for a decade now and I cry every time I watch it.

very beautifully stated
+Andrew Oriez I do not think waving a different countries flag would be a problem
Wolves600Gaming I didn't say that... I just simply said I would be one..... when it should be many.

I just got teary eyed for some reason. I love Canada!
me too and I love u!
this piece never fails to make me cry even all these years later! I ♥ my country....
"Never was so much owed by so many to so few" was a wartime speech made by the British prime minister Winston Churchill on 20 August 1940.

"March no more my soldier laddie, for for there is peace where there once was war. Sleep in peace my soldier laddie. Sleep in peace now the battle is over."
Where did you get the small poem?
Abigayle Lyon
They are the words of a Scottish pipe tune called " Mach No More" (March No More)
I was in error! The name of the tune is "When the battle is over" There is a great rendition of it by Andy Stewart on RUclips.
nathan will get this honor in about a hour from now. he is getting a police escort along the highway of heroes to my home town of hamilton
Methos Films We definitely made sure all the bridges in Kingston were full for him when he passed through.
We were asked to go to Afghanistan by their government. If you don't want to stand behind our troops then feel free to stand in front of them. Canada, Forever Proud.
A lovely and gracious tribute to our fallen Canadian heroes and their families. Thank you.

Well done, Canada !!
Inspired by stories of the "Highway of Heroes," Canadian rock band The Trews wrote an excellent tribute song with that title.
Stand Proud Canada!
Canada is totally crushing the internet today.
salute to Canada. God Save the Queen.
cool to see Canada on American news...hooah! respect
WE keep our land glorious and free.
they put us to shame the respect they show there

My hat off to you and you parents
I live in pei so i see soldiers everyday so i cried
Very sad.. but beautiful
Her son is not only a Canadian hero but an American hero as well because Canada is not an Ally that's too impersonal their family.
I'm so proud to be a Canadian. Regardless of our leader, regardless of whatever social issues are going on, we're a resilient group of strong people. We always get back up and support each other.
this is what being Canadian is all about!
May you rest in Peace my Brother In Arms,Per Ardua.

There is actually a song about it by the band the trews call highway of hero’s

I am Canadian.
And I love my neighbours to the south. Never had a single person do anything wrong to me in the USA.
light ribbing. Some jokes all around. The USA is the Greatest country on Earth.
They protect us all, and nobody acknowledges it.
We stand tall tomorrow lads on Parade.
True heroes , those fallen soldiers , the peoples response , a proud Canadian here , our governments treatment of the military ,,, disgraceful
thanks Stephen

America’s Gallant Soldiers
Poem By: David O. Melton
America’s gallant soldiers
Serve to keep America free,
And some pay freedom’s highest cost
And die protecting you and me
These valiant men and women
Whose mortal bodies now lay still,
In death earned the greatest honor
Herald by a lone bugler’s skill
Because they preserve our nation
Chosen honor guards stand abreast,
While a lone bugle sounds out taps
For each great soldier laid to rest
Yet far greater than all these things
Beyond the stones of marble white,
Behold God’s tribute of honor
That’s shining eternally bright
Greater love has no one than this,
To lay down one’s life for one’s friends,
This honor is proclaimed by God
Over everything it transcends
Now honor our gallant soldiers
Who under freedom’s banner fall,
Soldiers who had to leave loved ones
And made sacrifices for all
Uplift their hurt and grieving child
Left to long suffer and travail,
Each soldier’s widow and orphan
Greatly needs our help to prevail
Let our nation and our people
Honor all sacrifices made,
Now honor our gallant soldiers
And our sacred freedoms they saved
Reason why I enlisted
One day Afghanistan will become a free Country :) Good Luck to Afghanistan and Iraq
In nova scotia it the section 102 from the mergeing 118 from dartmouth / toward the Halifax Stanfield airport
I support the family of the canadian heroe

the Canadian government should look after the war vets for life. It is bullshit that most of them end up living on the streets
