🇬🇧🏃‍♂️ London stories: Running in Hampstead Heath

When we were in lockdown, with no possibility to travel we had to better explore the places around home. And why not doing it running then?
Spread over the hills in North London, Hampstead Heath is one of the most beautiful park in London. From here you can admire beautiful views over the city
It’s an ancient park, known since medieval times. It was popular with highwaymen, who for centuries preyed on wealthy travellers on their way to London. When they were caught, they were usually strung up on trees on the Heath. Their are the ghosts of HH
The park exists today thanks to a long, hard battle that was fought through the 1800s to protect one of the last remaining ‘lungs of London’ for everyone to enjoy. By the 1860s, common spaces across London were under threat and the area was targeted for massive real estate build up speculations. But thanks to a battle fought on tribunals, newspapers and even in Parliament, the public interest prevailed. A legacy of those days is the viaduct, a build that was build to give access to a new residential areas, never built
OK, let’s clear this fake news. No BBQ allowed at HH. But they are possible in the nearby Waterlow Park and in some of other parks in Camden. But HH is managed by the CoL and has different rules
Kenwood House is a large mansion. We said that public interest prevailed, when the park was protected by construction projects. Well, it looks like that the Earls of Mansfield, who owned Kenwood House, also opposed to avoid any construction and less noble neighbours would ruin their view on park and the city
The ponds originates from the springs of the River Fleet which flow to River Thames near what is today Fleet’s street. Today it flows almost entirely underground but in the days it was also known as Holborne, which gives the name to the Holborn neighbourhood
Parliament Hill is our end game. Legend has it that Guy Fawkes and his fellow 1605 Gunpowder Plot conspirators stood on the Hill as they looked toward parliament, waiting for it to blow up, earning it the name Traitors Hill for almost a century. It gained its current name while it served as a point of defence during the English Civil War for troops loyal to parliament.
