I remember seeing the first "Scream" at the movie theater there... About a year after this video.... Lived up on Banker's Hill next to Balboa Park... Loved San Diego in the 90's...... The whole city feels so busy and crowded now...
People hate on Horton Plaza now, but it sparked life into downtown. It's really sad what is happening to retail businesses. The internet is taking their lunch and fewer and fewer people have any discretionary money to spend anyway.
So many beautiful memories. Time flies by. The 90s were the best years of my life, I was a child. I am 29 and seeing videos like these make me tear up.
I was 15 when this video was recorded, and loved to hang out there. Such good memories of going to Sam Goody's and listening to CD's, and wandering outside the mall. Back then there were lots of homeless people outside the mall and it wasn't the busiest or fun mall compared to Fashion Valley. It was more of a tourist trap and not many locals went there.
Holy shit, so many memories are flooding back right now! I used to go into that Warner Bros. Studio Store and Sam Goody all the time as a kid. And now this mall’s completely dead and about to be turned into an office complex for startups. What a damn shame.
3 years later, it is being knocked down and re-developed to a office space and maybe some residential. And they are getting rid of that structure, it was a work of modern art imo
I remember La Salsa, and there was this Gnome troll statue at the east side of the mall. Scared the hell out of me as a kid. Saw a bunch of blockbuster movies at the theater.
@scrappyjaunk Yeah, I didn't take most of the video so. This is also an old video with a oldschool camcorder. Why did you keep watching if it's that bad?
I remember going to Horton with my stepmom (RIP), going to the shops. I can't remember the name of this eatery right now, but it was known for its many types of fries.
I had to cross staircases a few times to get to the right floor in parking garage. Kinda scary. I remember THE NATURE COMPANY, SUNCOAST MOTION PICTURE COMPANY, I tried to park in same area to not get lost! Vegetable 🌽 or Fruit 🍎 floors ?!?! Avocado 🥑, Strawberry 🍓, Corn 🌽, Grape 🍇. What else ?
So we just went to Horton Plaza today and man, times have changed. I remember going there as a kid back in the 90s and it was such a good time. My dad would take us out of school and eat at the food court and I remember when one of the eateries, I don’t remember which one, sold a big cup of french fries that we would just binge on. haha, good times. I wish I knew the name. :/
I can remember exactly how this place looked the day it opened and to my recollection, the only place that survived from opening day was the Panda Inn which remained a time capsule since opening day. Every other place was changed.
nostalgia big time, i used to spedn lots of time there, hot topic, sam goodies. i believe it was Amc theaters, i wish i could visit one more time before it all closes and gets demo
It’s ironic how this mall was designed to revitalize downtown SD, and now downtown is revitalized and Horton Plaza is pretty much dead.
Downtown sucks more than ever now.
Your MESSAGE SUMS IT UP!
I first arrived in San Diego in December 1997 while stationed in the Navy and found Horton Plaza as my primary haunt!

I first arrived there in late 1997 while stationed in the Navy and saw "Titanic!"
@@m.alexanderzagorski2438 I remember seeing Titanic, but at Fashion Valley Mall over by USD. Good times! Miss those days..... and my 20's. :-D
Regret never watching a movie there 😪
SO glad you shot this video in it's heyday - remember when it was so chic to have a glass of white wine and shop at Nordies!
Nice video! I miss Horton Plaza from the '90s...

I appreciate this footage! Thanks for posting it!

I was 16. Same. I remember the place since it opened. It was and is one of a kind. Very few places still look modern that were built 33 years ago.
ABSOLUTELY!
I was in the 6th grade remember it was always packed in the late 90s
I lived there in the 80's, I always remember walking under that big cinnamon bun air vent and getting very hungry
Right? Before it turned into the chain. I can still smell that to this day.

I remember the Sesame Street Store as a kid and Oscar the grouch would pop out from his trash can
Thank you for this video, unfortunately this mall is now abandoned and slowly going down. only think left is smaller stores and the movie theater 😔
3 years later, it is being knocked down and re-developed to a office space and maybe some residential. And they are getting rid of that structure, it was a work of modern art imo
The Nature Company in the 80s. What a wonderful spot ❤️

I'm 44 and 1995 was such a simpler time sans Social Media, Android Phones,as well as Google, Wikipedia, etc! 😂
I stop by there every few years and see it become more lonely every time. It's really sad to see a downtown die like it is now.

I loved Nordstrom old logo

Superfries -- you're welcom ;)
That had to have been Boardwalk Fries
Horton Plaza was great back then. Now it's a ghost town.
I can remember exactly how this place looked the day it opened and to my recollection, the only place that survived from opening day was the Panda Inn which remained a time capsule since opening day. Every other place was changed.
San Diego has more people spending less money now...
Walter Wynnchok not necessarily. their just spending it more online
I remember that classical music in the background they used to play.
In 1995 Tony Gwynn (May 9,1960- June 16,2014) earned his sixth career batting title,.368!
+MatthewTS22 it was called Boardwalk Fries they were the best! 😋

OOh, i leave in Tijuana, i remember the Warner Brtothers and the old Logg from Nordstrom.

Downtown SD has never been a happening place always a dead downtown
you’ve never been there on the weekend then. not the craziest downtown but it was far from dead.
