We originally built the claws several years ago during an internship at a local machine shop. Based off of the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), the claws measure 33CM (13”) and are made of high carbon steel, nickel plated for a mirror finish.
They took approximately 20 hours to manufacture. The outline was waterjet cut, the blade details were machined on a CNC, it was hand ground to shape, and then TIG welded together. The entire assembly was then nickel plated to create a mirror finish.
The claws were used for a few cosplay photoshoots, and even tested by catching 50lb hay bales in the attached video.
To create a sparking effect better than the original CGI in X-Men Origins, a car battery was connected to the claws, positive on one claw, negative on the other. When connecting the claws together, the car battery is short-circuited, resulting in big sparks! These sparks can draw anywhere from 200-300A, which the car battery can safely provide (rated for over 1000A cranking).
The sparks are actually tiny bits of superheated metal coming from the claws - so the effect does slightly damage the props. Basically, the claws are acting like a resistor - becoming red hot, melting, and shooting little bits of molten metal away at high-speed for a glorious effect.

The sparks are exactly like how the claws are portrayed in the comics and cartoons. You made Wolverine's claws more realistic than even the studios could do with their limited practical and CGI effects.
Realistic... they did the spark thing once, and it looked dumb as shit. There is absolutely no reason why Wolverine's claws would spark in reality.
+Lcomus Well duh. What I meant was out of all the mediums Hacksmith did the claws closer looking to the comics than even the movies did.
+MsSomeonenew It was dumb in the movie because the claw and the spark were all CGI. Here on the other hand, the Spark is real, the claw is real and it's as close to the comics as one gets. Wolverine's Claws spark because they are one of the sharpest metals in the Marvelverse and the sparks are the result of the weaker metal objects falling apart at a microscopic rate.
