I have fairly decent bass pro shop model low profile baitcaster that has an 8:5:1 ratio and I love it but lol it's tedious when fishing for crappie and reeling slow .. I know that baitcaster aren't really ideal for crappie fishing but I love using them because they're just satisfying to use. Closest I can get to fly without a fly rod and I'm not trying to cast a fly reel into the brush for crappie and bluegills. I use it for everything really lol mine has 20lb drag and I use it on a pretty heavy medium ugly stick. I have good cat poles with large baitcasters and I use the heck out of them but I always bring my low profile with me to get into those sweet spots that I can't aim well at with the big ones. Love it and it cost me $130
Good video, very informative; just a word of advice, I noticed you adjusting your spool tension to the lure. With a DC reel this is not needed, you simply adjust the spool to remove the side to side play, the IDC5 system will take care of the rest as long as you have it set to the correct lure weight. Same thing with the older IDC4 system, just set it to the correct line type/wind conditions.
Hey bud. Quick tip. You don’t need to loosen up the tension knob per bait with the higher end reels. All you have to do is loosen the knob just enough for the spool to have a little play and tune with the dc brakes and you are golden. This applys to that high end daiwa. The knob is hard to reach because the knob is preset from the factory
I got the same one in the LH. Took 2 months to come. The wait was agonizing! But we'll worth it. Casts a mile and it is so smooth. My favorite reel to date!
Some people claim that if you get spoiled by a big fish and your line is tied threw the holes in your spool then it could potentially warp the spool, but I've never had any problem with this at all but your guess is as good as mine my friend. I just got the 21 scorpion 300HG MD LH, the reel is a beast! I’ve been eyeing this scorpion DC or the 18 Anteras DC. I’ve recently started fishing mostly bigger baits, but want to jump the shark on a DC reel. Nice review, I like the price point on this Scorpion vs the Antares. I’m not sure why, but I’ve avoided the curado all together🤷🏻♂️

The holes are for weight. The holes are on one side because the dc system it would change how it works if they was on both sides. You don't need to use mono backing if you tape the line to spool. I make sure to use one full wrap of tape to keep weight even on the spool. But braid can squish and get wavy if super thick so sometimes I will use mono backing because I don't need a full spool of braid. And instead of taking it off or using the opposite end I'll just add whatever amount more that I need but that's just preference. Just a heads up I have the 17scorpion and you can make it a micro module unit by buying the pinion and main gear from the curado mgl 70k. I got the hg like my scorpion was before but the mm gears sure make a difference and also you can add the worm screw bearing on the 17 as well as one in each knob. Now mine is micromodule and 10/1 bearing configuration instead of the stock 7/1. I know the 21 could also use one bearing in each knob and the main gear I believe does not have a bearing, For whatever reason but for the small money to get a bearing it's totally worth it. And I'm not 100% sure but the worm screw may be able to get a bearing instead of bushing also. It's so worth it.
I have 4 scorpions. I just wrap it around the spool, tie a square knot and put a small 1/2” piece of gorilla tape to hold it and spool it up. No problems and the reels have not failed once in 2 years. I have had some backlashes but those were my mistake by not adjusting for the wind.
When I tried tying the line through the holes on my caius it cut the 30lb super braid with a fairly light tug, if you ever run your line all the way out it's probably a lot more likely to break off of the spool like that.

Keeping up with reels is seriously like trying to keep up with the latest phone. haha.. I still like my 2020 Metanium MGL the best though. I can cast that directly into strong winds with no issues at all! Oh, and it is smooooooooth. Just like all other high end Shimano reels. Nice vid man.
Now I think this is a way better reel then the Curado but rn it’s a little overpriced and I can’t find a 151HG right now so I think I’m gonna go with the Curado. Lmk how you feel about me buying the Curado instead. Also how long do you think this will be $350 and if there will be a 151HG model?
Hey Westin! I just received mine from Digitaka. It's weird out of the box I tried spinning the handle usually you get that "DC sound" mine has nothing at all. Is yours the same?
I use the adhesive strips that comes with the reel, and follow the diagram in the instructions. No tying to the spool. I haven't had any problems with setting the hook, no slips, no problems at all. BTW, loving the Subie.

I just got my 21 Scorpion DC 150HG and I love it. Odd that yours has "power grip" written on the handle, mine doesn't say anything. It also has some movement in the handle side to side, don't know if that's normal or not, would love to hear what you all think.

Im also useing Flouro and it feels great for your gridiron jigs and many other things like light Mepps spinnners. Also I thought about the "power grip" writting and it may be the XG model vs HG/Standard which as you said have longer handles which i was origicanlly going to get. Saw you way back on Googan channel and JonB, I enjoy your content and remember watching your Metenium DC review/Scorpion DC 2017 videos over 10 times in prepration to buying this DC reel and I dont regret it. If you baying a reel what is for the JDM Market then the Manuel is in Japan, if you're baying in UK or USA then the Manuel is in English, that was easy isn't it.?
With braid, you should add backing. Add 5 yards of mono so the braid has something to grip onto. With enough pressure, the braid could slip on the spool even if you went through the hole.
I want to know on the scorpion DC reel if I set the adjustment to W or A and I don't put my thumb on the spool it is impossible to have a blacslash Thank You
I use a hair bit of the tape from the line spool to hold the braid on the reel. tying it can make a small bump and an uneven spool. never needed a backing on a baitcaster, spinning ALWAYS use electric tape or some cheap mono for backing.
This thing a beast. I had the slx dc xg. Return it and got the 21 scorpion xg instead. Can definitely feel the quality and a whole lot smoother. Also got it from Japan. The exchange rate for the win. So i actually got a better BC for like $10 or so cheaper hahaha

I have two of them now. One is stock and one is fully APEC9 ceramic bearings. Drag clicker mod and high crank handle. To be honest, it's not worth the money. Stock is still nice.

Great reel i bought one …. Just be REAL careful removing the spool adjustment knob when cleaning …. the threads are too fine and i ran mine over…. had to send it in to re-thread . Otherwise GREAT reel
Probably best buying a reel like this as first year take care of it and have it for years to come .My honest opinion ! Really get what you pay for ! I've been through many reels in my life time and more you pay in most cases the better the cast , stronger , holds up.Even this reel is still a cheap compared to some other reels !
All my shimano reels could crap out tomorrow and I would go right back to them. 2 metaniums 4 curados 1 scorpion 2 slx dc and mgl all but one are xg and it's my crank bait reel. I have never had one crap out on me. I have 10 year old curados.
I feel the same way. Im a shimano man through and through. Ive tampered with other brands here and there and I do own 1 diawa tatula elite and 1 diawa tatula sv but none compare to what I get out of shimano reels. They last and they have a smoothness that I dont feel in other brands. I like my 2 diawas I have alot, but I love my shimanos.
Those holes in the spool have sharp edges and will cut right through your line under load. I just wrap a 1/4" wide piece of electrical tape around the middle of the spool over my initial anchor loop pulled as tight as possible, and then start my spooling around that. The tape prevents slippage.

I believe the W is for Windy and replaces the “A” or “Auto” of the previous gen. It’s just for extreme situations I believe

I just put black electrical tape on the spool before I put braid on. The braid will have something to bit on. Then put braid on.

Also, the Alberto knot is an easy knot for leaders. check it out bud, its not difficult to learn and takes only a minute to do.

Youre not supposed to tie the line through the holes of the spool. Those holes are only there to make the spool lighter.

All my shimano reels could crap out tomorrow and I would go right back to them. 2 metaniums 4 curados 1 scorpion 2 slx dc and mgl all but one are xg and it's my crank bait reel. I have never had one crap out on me. I have 10 year old curados.
I feel the same way. Im a shimano man through and through. Ive tampered with other brands here and there and I do own 1 diawa tatula elite and 1 diawa tatula sv but none compare to what I get out of shimano reels. They last and they have a smoothness that I dont feel in other brands. I like my 2 diawas I have alot, but I love my shimanos.
How do it compare to the curado dc

Yes those is just to lighten the spool only
Those holes in the spool have sharp edges and will cut right through your line under load. I just wrap a 1/4" wide piece of electrical tape around the middle of the spool over my initial anchor loop pulled as tight as possible, and then start my spooling around that. The tape prevents slippage.

Yeah, it the same DC chip as the metanium DC reel. Only the 2021 Antares DC has the new chip remap.

Just use fingernail polish to secure the braid. Clean up during swap with acetone.
Never never never put the line through that hole, voids the warranty an can crack the spool according to rep.
Any tips to preventing line slipping if not tied to one of those holes?
@@SLA2014 I’ve never had line slip when I’m using mono or flouro. And whenever I use braid I put a mono backing on it.

Shimano explicitly says to use a little electrical tape to secure the braid, but yes not through the holes.
