  • This special talk was recorded at the Science Museum’s IMAX Theatre between astronaut Buzz Aldrin and British physicist Brian Cox.
Aldrin was selected by NASA in 1963 into the third group of astronauts and on 20 July 1969 made history with Neil Armstrong during their Apollo 11 moonwalk, becoming the first two humans to set foot on another world.
Since retiring from NASA, Aldrin continues to chart a course for future space travel and is passionate about inspiring the younger generations of future explorers and innovators.
Dr. Aldrin is an author of nine books including ‘Mission to Mars: My Vision for Space Exploration’ which outlines his plan to get us beyond the moon and on to Mars. He continues to inspire today’s youth with his illustrated children’s books including ‘Welcome to Mars: Making a Home on the Red Planet’.
Professor Brian Cox is an Advanced Fellow of particle physics in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester and presenter of numerous science programmes including BBC2’s Stargazing Live.

I met Buzz once at a NBAA Convention in New Orleans many years ago. Inside the convention Big room he was sitting by himself had some papers in his hand and I walked up and I stuck out my hand and he stood up and shook my hand. I thanked him and said “I watched you guys on TV and what you did convinced me to become a pilot…Thank you .” I’m now a 70yo Veteran and retired pilot who had a wonderful life flying around our world.

I saw him driving down the street in an old corvette in Ventura Ca. I thought I would die. I waved and shouted hello and he smiled at me and waved back. I almost drowned in a pool when I was nine and I woke up in a hospital and watched them launch and by the time I got home they were walking on the moon. My Mother said "I am glad that you lived to see this" I thought, yeah me too!

Brian is an outstanding interviewer. He asks the simple questions and lets the speaker "speak" without any interference whatsoever. Amazing. Most interviewers would be compelled to intervene and interject something along the way. But Dr. Cox sits back and does his job. Brian Cox is one of the best interviewers I've ever seen of Buzz Aldrin. BTW, Buzz legally changed his name to "Buzz" in the 1990s according to the book "Rocket Men" by Craig Nelson.

@@shakedown2246 QUOTE: "The radiation belts of the Earth do, indeed, pose important constraints on the safety of human space flight. The very energetic (tens to hundreds of MeV) protons in the inner radiation belt are the most dangerous and most difficult to shield against. Specifically, prolonged flights (i.e., ones of many months' duration) of humans or other animals in orbits about the Earth must be conducted at altitudes less than about 250 miles in order to avoid significant radiation exposure. A person in the cabin of a space shuttle in a circular equatorial orbit in the most intense region of the inner radiation belt, at an altitude of about 1000 miles, would be subjected to a fatal dosage of radiation in about one week. However, the outbound and inbound trajectories of the Apollo spacecraft cut through the outer portions of the inner belt and because of their high speed spent only about 15 minutes in traversing the region and less than 2 hours in traversing the much less penetrating radiation in the outer radiation belt. The resulting radiation exposure for the round trip was less than 1% of a fatal dosage - a very minor risk among the far greater other risks of such flights. I made such estimates in the early 1960s and so informed NASA engineers who were planning the Apollo flights. -- James A. Van Allen" END QUOTE

One of the cues that someone is lying is when they can't keep a story consistent, or when their facts change when challenged. None of these are present when Buzz Aldrin or in other videos Neil Armstrong are speaking so I accept the fact that China, Australia and England exist because of my friends speaking calmly and consistently of their time spent in other countries. Buzz Aldrin is telling a story his stories haven't changed over the years so it stands to reason that based on everything we know he probably you know actually did these things and actually went to the Moon. It's sad that people like you want to tarnish Our Heroes by trying to make them out to be liars and charlatans.

It was really really cool and he was (pardon the pun) very down to earth.
We didn't even talk about space at all (I tried hard not to be a starstruck douche). We talked about the next port of Civitavecchia, Italy (port of Roma) and Italian wine mostly. Wow! We actually have a real SUPERHERO still living (The SECOND Man To Walk On The Moon)! He is currently 94 years old and still looking great. As a 16-year-old in 1969, it was great to experience our astronaut heroes routinely landing on the moon until 1972. However, nothing in that era was more heart-pounding than the first mission of Buzz and Neil. It was all so unreal!

Be sure to watch the video of their post flight press conference. A British journalist asks the threesome what it was like to view the stars out there, obviously implying that it must have been a magnificent sight. With a deadpan expression, Armstrong replies only that the stars were not visible from the surface of the moon "without optics". At this, Collins, who of course was never supposed to have set foot on the moon himself, tries to support Neil by adding "I don't remember seeing any...." Poor Neil physically flinches at this mind-boggling line and looks like he'd like to take Mike aside and say 'Hey Mike, why don't you just shut up, ok?' Hilarious stuff, don't miss it. :-)

I would argue that the most iconic photo in human history is the one they took of the earth that was on the cover of life magazine. But the one of Buzz is goid too 😁

Great interview I loved the filming of the LIM as it ascended from the moon surface yet some people say that could not be possible, well anythings possible if you put your mind into it.

LM ascent was only observed by the last three missions, from the camera in the moon buggy, was that not made clear?

Enjoyed this years ago, but fun to watch again. It certainly details lots of project as well as political decisions, as was the mood and mode of their route to the ultimate goal.
Amazing that even in the early 70s, there were considerations for progressing on to Mars, but the time and cost seemed to fade, with the required international coordination, there still being more competition than coordination drive,
