  • The Dung Gate is located in the southern wall of the Old City near the Western Wall.
The Dung Gate was built in the middle of the 16th century as part of the restoration of the city walls by the Ottoman Sultan, Suleiman the magnificent.
The name 'Dung Gate' already appears in the Bible during the days of the Return to Zion in the Book of Nehemiah, chapter 2, verse thirteen. In the context of what is written in the Book of Nehemiah, the Dung Gate is located at the lowest point in the southeast of the Old City, near the point where the Central Valley drains out of the old city and connects to the Kidron brook.
It is likely that much of the sewage flowed through it and it is possible that the name of the Dung gate originated from the sewage and city garbage that passed through the central valley. Over the years it was the most neglected and impoverished area in the city, which was probably already used in the Second Temple period as a place for artisans and sheep breeders, and in the Crusader period as the seat of the tanners who are leather processors.

I'm an ex dairyman , I know a lot about dung . I was reading scriptures about the fig tree that did not bare fruit after 3 seasons , The gardener was told take the fig tree out , but he said let me dig a trench around the fig tree and dung it . I thought that is kind of funny " dung it " . I also read somewhere we all need a dung gate to get the crap out of our lives . Ha Ha that now that is funny !
