Yeah, but its kind of literally the point of the Light, you're encouraged to run into it, in Christianity, when dying your are literally told to choose heaven over returning to the living if given the choice. You see, my big problem with this song is that at no point does he commit sin. Which is a requirement to end up in hell. Now we can assume he has sinned as all humans do, but his sins are never significant enough for mention, and he repents every Sunday for forgiveness which is exactly what the scripture asks you to do. The scripture never asks you to avoid sin with perfect gusto just because you feel like being a good person, the scripture literally threatens the punishment of eternal damnation so that those who follow the faith won't deviate into more "tempting" and sinful behaviors.

In my opinion, this song represents people who do good things just so they'd be thought of as "good people" instead of doing them just because they genuinely want to and aren't honest with themselves in that sense. They don't try to become a better person, but only pretend they are by doing "good deeds" just so people think they're actually getting better and praise them.

    • @SurgeFire

      Yes, exactly!
A lot of this song is based off implications instead of spelling out his misdeeds. You can tell through the implications that he mainly did his deeds to act good but ultimately were for his benefit-for example, he rode his bike… but when gas prices rose.
As well, he rushes death with little disregard to his loved ones. (Though when he realizes that he's being punished for his selfishness? Now he doesn't want to die!)
That's what I like about it! It doesn't go in detail about his fraud, but lets you understand the double meaning of his actions. :)

In my understanding of this song, Charlie was so focused on living up to the standards of a “good person” that he never actually took time to be a good person. Everything he did, even getting his wife cards and going to church, was all just so he could get into heaven. Heck, he was so excited to go to heaven he never actually considered the people who would miss him. He never gave out of the kindness of his heart, but out of his willingness to get to heaven. You could describe this as Fraud or Greed, but that’s not the point. All in all just be a good person, regardless of if God is watching or not.

I like the lyric 'Avoiding all the little things that were hard to ask'. It sounds so out of place listed with the 'good' deeds he did, and was sung in a way where you wouldn't even notice it if you weren't paying attention. I feel like those 'little things' were genuinely good stuff that Charlie could have done in his life, but ignored due to them not immediately benefiting him at the time. Also, the lyric being right before mentioning his death shows that the other stuff didn't matter as much as the 'little things' he'd avoided in the end.

Honesty, I appreciate the consensus, but I do think there’s another way of looking at it. I believe that it’s more so a symbolic song, Charlie lived his life “ignoring all the little things that were hard to ask”
I see that as him avoiding his own mental problems, determined on being a good person. He ran from his inner demons, refusing to confront himself. At the end it states, I think, “You can run from your demons until you are exhausted, but one day you have to stop and wonder what they wanted.”

When they say that he judged with no pretense it means that he was unbiased and fair in his judgements. Example, he wouldn't decide that a person was responsible for a meltdown at work just because the person was a Mexican etcetera etcetera.
And when they say he avoided the little things that were hard to ask I think they are talking about things like alcohol, cigarettes, porn, and other things that people commonly indulge in. Those would be difficult to ask someone to completely avoid in their life and a person would not be judged just because they indulged in it. But charlie didn't indulge.

Despite how nice Charlie seems, he ultimately went to hell for being a liar, blaming others, and never taking responsibility for his own mistakes. The entire video, all we ever see Charlie do is either try to run away from the situation or try to talk his way out of it and even foist blame onto others (angels). He makes excuses for why he couldn't possibly be bound for hell, he never even entertains the idea that maybe he didn't deserve to go to heaven. Charlie never mentions anything along the lines of being a good person or samaritan to excuse himself, just "I went to church!". When lying and words didn't help, he runs away at one point, too. It ends with him trapped forever, repeating the words to try and plead and talk his way out of a situation he can never escape from. That's his inferno.
In Dante's Inferno, the 8th circle of hell is dedicated to Fraud. It's a pit of darkness where they're tortured for eternity, which Charlie notably also fell into.

I think people trying to prove Charlie is actually bad are missing the point. In my opinion, one of themes of the song is that we always try to find a reason and hope that good people are rewarded while bad people are punished, but the real world isn't like that, and sometimes terrible things happen to people through no fault of their own.

The thing is, the whole point of heaven is that God's judgement is supreme and the good are rewarded while the wicked are punished. Unless we're going with the rapidly rising in popularity trope of "hell good, heaven bad", then Charlie _deserved_ to go to hell, not because "the world is unfair".
And there's a fair amount of context throughout the song to suggest he really wasn't a good person.

I think the "Never swam in the ocean for fear of shark attacks" explains why he went to hell. He never did anything due to the goodness of his heart, but for fear of getting punished. Very different things. He didn't give his wife roses because he loved her, but so he could say he was a loving husband. He didn't go to church to actually worship the lord and help the community, but to say he went to church. Everything he did was superficial and had no true motive behind it outside of "I don't want to go to hell"

Charlie's punishment is interesting to me. The song never actually mentions what his punishment is but this video puts him in a jar. This song, "charlie's inferno" is a reference to dante's inferno. In dante's inferno there is only one layer that has a similar punishment to what charlie gets. Left alone, trapped in a cold dark place by yourself, a place so deep in hell that there is no light. That's the ninth level of hell. The deepest level of hell for the worst sinners, the traitors. It's interesting to think that charlie was a traitor enough to warrent eternal damnation.

I always interpreted it as him going to purgatory. He didn't do anything horrible in his life, but he never did anything great for others. He wasn't kind or altruistic, just nonconfrontational. He avoided anything that could've been a problem instead of facing them head on. So he's left to continually wonder why he was rejected from heaven. And by the end, he still doesn't see himself to blame, he thinks someone must've made a mistake, he isn't stopping to question what those angels wanted.

As many many others have pointed out, plenty of Charlie’s habits are either done with vested self-interest (saving money with cold showers and biking to work) or are mostly meaningless gestures of thoughtfulness (offering his own wife a rose, without helping anyone truly in need who he doesn’t know or sacrificing his own wellbeing for others). This also shows with his priority being to go to heaven rather than to rejoin his friends and family to support them. This could make him a decent candidate for fraud, but i think his true sin is pride or hubris. He presumptuously assumes he is going to heaven when he dies (“off to see the man upstairs”). When he is denied, he also presumptuously assumes that a God who he believes is omnipotent, omniscient, and all-good - assuming his piety is true and he follows any of the mainstream/popular branches of Christianity - has made a mistake (“there must be someone you’ve confused me for”). He also pleads his case using well-known informal fallacies, appeal to character (e.x. “I could never have done something so violent, I wouldn’t hurt a fly! Just ask my friends/family/coworkers/anyone!”) when he asks to see “someone who knows him”, and appeal to authority (e.x. “Carl Sagan says that the digits of pi on a dot matrix reveals the face of God, so I must be right because I agree with him on that and he’s super smart!”) when he asks to see “someone in uniform”. To me, this just screams entitlement in hubris. In my interpretation, Charlie was a decent enough guy and was going to get into heaven, and his damnation was a secret test of character to see if he would accept his God’s judgement of him (which he failed by protesting and was therefore sent to hell for his hubris to challenge the authority of God, just as the Devil/Lucifer who he meets down there was banished for).
Or maybe I’m looking into it too much. Great song and animation either way.

Dont mind me, just posting some lyrics for myself
    (Here lies Charlie.
You can tell it's him 'cause we put his name on the stone.)
He kept his showers ice cold,
    Used eco-friendly lightbulbs
Rode his bicycle to work when the gasoline price rose
He'd judge with no pretense, fish on the weekends
Each morning, get up, do the Pledge of Allegience
Never swim in the ocean, for fear of shark attacks
Bi-monthly get his wife a rose with a card attached
Avoiding all the little things that were hard to ask
Had a car crash, cardiac arrest, died of a heart attack
Up the golden escalator, all his friends and neighbors
Huddled there in prayer around the respirator
Catch you later, I'm off to see the man upstairs
They all look like ants from here
    Stars and crystal chandaliers
There was an angel at the entrance
    Checking off a guest list
Charlie wasn't on it, and was ushered to the exit
His heart sank, he was breathless
    Excuse me, sir!
There must be someone you've confused me for
If I could see someone who knew me or someone in uniform
I go to church on Sunday, truly, usually more!
Screaming at the angels while they pushed him through the door!
    Excuse me, sir!
There must be someone you've confused me for
If I could see someone who knew me or someone in uniform
I go to church on sunday, truly, usually more!
Screaming at the angels while they pushed him through the door!
"Abandon all hope, all ye who enter."
It was a horrifying sign, but sounded like a neat adventure.
Far beyond the halos and the castles in the clouds
Fatsos squealing, shackled with some apples in their mouths
Attention whores in padded bras hanging from extension cords
Tortured with the products from their favorite catalogs
Here, we buy and sell a million kinds of Hell
Imagination is the limit to the devil's clientelle
Up a dingy elevator, no televised debate
Will save you from the Hell you paid for

    Side-stepped fate

But you know the devil, he loves a good chase!

Who would kick you in the ass when you begged him for repentance
Those tempted by the senses with the cruelest of intentions
Charlie's heart sank, he was breathless
    Excuse me, sir!
There must be someone you've confused me for
If I could see someone who knew me or someone in uniform
I really don't belong here, I know you've heard the tune before

Interesting interpretation on the animator's part!
From a Jewish perspective, it only matters that you did a good deed. It doesn't matter if you get a reward or not. If you're a "psychopath" (the word for the real disorder is "asocial" I believe) and you struggle with empathy because of it, but know logically that you don't want to hurt anyone because it would have consequences for you, EVEN if that's the ONLY REASON, you've still done a good deed when you stop and don't chose to say the mean thing when you're angry, or don't put the cat out in the rain, etc.
There's a story of a man who went to the Rabbi and said he'd like to open up an orphanage. The next week, he went back to the Rabbi and said he had changed his mind and would not do it. When the astonished Rabbi asked why, the man said, "I realized while praying that I only wanted to do it for myself and my reputation. It was all for selfish reasons." The rabbi replied, "Will the orphans care if you are selfish?"
A good deed is a good deed. Don't second guess yourself, and don't let others do it to you either. Just do what you can, even if that good deed for today is just being alive and giving yourself a little break.

    • @ChangedMyNameFinally69
      @ChangedMyNameFinally69 11 месяцев назад +4

Nah, someone like that will abandon the pretext of being good the moment it's beneficial to. I hate that argument, let's stop defending selfishness. Celebrities donate to charity for tax breaks, that's still an evil act. People like that will also never make any good decisions that hurt them too much or sacrifice themselves for others. They'll never do what's actually needed to better the world.

    • @RockySamson
      @RockySamson 9 месяцев назад +5

@@ChangedMyNameFinally69I like the idea that donating an incredibly large sum of money to people who desperately need it doesn’t actually better the world because it may feed one person’s ego. It’s interesting that you side against the orphans in this example, preferring they earnestly suffer rather than prosper from someone else’s supposed selfishness.
On that note, I feel there’s a very interesting key difference between the man in the story and Charlie: integrity. The man in the story recognized his own selfishness, and the Rabbi noted that despite his supposed intentions there would still be a great benefit to those in need. The fact that the man acknowledged where he was coming from yet may still build the orphanage at the Rabbi’s behest genuinely makes it a good deed because at that point his actions became a choice, not an assumption. Charlie would’ve built the orphanage in denial of his selfish motivations, and while the orphans would still have benefited, Charlie’s denial of his nature is ultimately what he’s punished for. The man in the story recognizes his own shortcomings, which is how we often begin to resolve them within ourselves, by acknowledging them in the first place. Charlie was in constant denial of who he really was, so he never truly faced his demons until it was too late.

@@RockySamson Yet notice how charity hasn't even alleviated these issues? If charity actually ended poverty the rich would be against it. You can't trust the orphanage owner because there's a very good chance he half-asses everything anyway

    Charlie isn’t a good person.
0:07 ”here lies Charlie you can tell it’s him cause we put his name on the stone.” Implying that most people can tell how Charlie is.(idk)
・he did most things for himself. 0:13 “kept his showers ICE COLD” cold water dosent run up bills. Charlie didn’t want to pay money for his living so he kept his cold showers. 0:15 “used eco friendly light bulbs.” Eco friendly props or items don’t harm the environment around you, he was doing it for HIS safety, not others. 0:17 “rode his bicycle to work *when the gasoline price roars* ” the highlighted part applies that once again he didn’t want to pay for his living. 0:30 “bi monthly get his wife a rose with a card attached” every two months he only does so to apply and “act of kindness for his wife” which was only to be said as a nice person
0:41 his neighbors and loved ones were sitting around his hospital bed, and it looked like he could’ve has a chance to run back if he really wanted to but he chose not to because he was entirely excited to go to heaven, so he just said “cya, I’m going to see the man upstairs”and describes heaven.
1:06 when trying to excuse the angel to let him in heaven, he said nothing about being a good person or anything, just that he didn’t belong in hell.
1:16 “ *SCREAMING AT THE ANGELS* as they pushes him through the door” screaming at gods angel because you don’t want to go to hell? Something is off there.
3:18 “I don’t want to die…” as he noticed he had more to his life than just heaven.
3:36 you can tell he was a pretty bad person if his ‘torture’ is being stranded in a jar.
・you might think “but dosent everybody wanna get to heaven so they do good things?” Yes BUT, if your doing something like praying, or giving and sharing JUST to get to heaven, your not doing it for a nice reason, your doing it for your good.

I mean, why would you attend the death bed of the guy you hate? Why would you even bother?
My point of view is that the thing that Charlie did to get him stuck in eternal torture was _Freedom._
He *could* do those things out of his own heart, but he only did the bare minimun. He never truly challenged himself to become a better person. He kept escaping the demons and ran to the angels for so long, that he ignored the people who he *_could_* help, and instead continued to be a jackass to everyone he saw no need to help.
There is no problem in wanting heaven, but Charlie took it too much into the extreme, to the point his whole _life_ was based around it. Wanting to become the perfect person for eternal rest, he ended up becoming the perfect soul to be eternaly tortured.
      But that's just a theory.

I think I finally understand this song.
So, we all know that Charlie did all of these wonderful and good things to be liked by many, and loved and mourned by his wife at his passing. But again, something didn't sit right with me: why *did* Charlie go to Hell? Why wasn't he rewarded for his good deeds? And that's when something hit me:
The preacher lists off all of these great things that Charlie did in his life; keeping his showers cold, doing the pledge, and buying his wife card and roses every now and then. But really, that's all it is: A LIST. A list of good things Charlie has done to make his seem *worthy* of going into heaven. That's why Charlie is so distraught and confused when he's rejected into Heaven, even pleading with the Angels that he goes to church more than *once* on Sundays. And to add onto that, he seem so enthusiastic to get into heaven, not even feeling sad or mournful that he left his wife and his friends when he died. He was READY and EAGER to get into paradise.
The line in the song that really made this click was: "Those tempted by their senses by the cruelest of intentions."
Charlie didn't do those good things because he was a good person. He did them to secure himself a place in everlasting life and bliss.
But, of course, it doesn't turn out that way. The Angels see right through him, seeing that there was no sincerity in his actions, not matter how much he tries to convince them, and himself, that there was. And so, he's sent to hell to be trapped in a jar; a confined restricting existence, being devoid of the very things he sought to gain once he died.
Honestly, I'm sure that there are people who have thought of different theories than I have for this song, but to me this one just seems to make the most sense.
EDIT: I think I should make it clear the basis of my theory is rooted in more of a moral standpoint. Perhaps this song take the saying "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions" as literally as it could, but I personally like to believe that you don't get into Heaven just for doing good and honest things, but you shouldn't expect any reward for simple being a good person, or "Doing good with Ill intent." Again, this is just my personal take on the story being told here.

The same motif also applies with the actual art style of the 3d animation. The characters and locations are modeled and designed in a way reminiscent of commercials or nursery rhyme videos (again, I don't mean this in a bad way), however the things you see follow the tale told by the lyrics of this song. I'm unsure of whether or not this was intentional, but if it was, it was a really great decision, and makes this video all the more iconic.

There are two theories of this that I like-1 is that all of the singing is Charlie's external dialog. He doesn't see himself as a bad person because he's describing himself
And 2 every good thing he describes himself doing is all for selfish reasons. He's extremely fruegal his entire life the only thing he does for ther people is gives his wife a rose. Aside from that gas price goes up-avoid car all together, uses energy efficient lightbulbs to save on his electric bill, eats fish on weekends because it's a cheap meal, and doesn't swim because fear of personal harm from sharks. The demon tells him you get what you paid for. When he doesn't get into heaven he blames the angels for the mistake when he gets to hell he blames the demons but never takes responsiblity and his punishment is the 8th circle of fraud. He runs from his demons while never confronting them

A person in the comments by the tag of Hey Chummer (I think) stated the reason why Charlie went to hell. But I want to focus on his fate. He was sent to hell for never owning up to his problems, shifting blame onto others, and possibly trying to go to heaven for all his good deeds rather then out of the kindness of his own heart. Throughout the song he constantly tries to reason with the angels and devils on how this shouldn’t be happening. During the bridge for the “Hell” section of the song, a key lyric is stated as so “-I know you've heard the tune before”. Meaning he’s almost sure that this excuse was used before hand. And most likely it was, based on how many jars surrounded Charlie at the end. And that’s just it, the Devil is a cruel and twisted soul and what better way to get a kick then to listen to the endless pleas of the Liars and Cheats of the world. All in the safety of a jar. Notice how at the end, all the people who share Charlie’s fate never look around, instead they all do the same of pleading with the Devil. It’s because they can’t accept what happened to them. “I’m a good person! They were wrong!”, lies such as that will spew from their mouth constantly because no matter who they were, they can’t confront that their deeds are as hollow as souless as the demons within hell.

I imagine an edit to this song where everything is the same except the crying from the beginning continues on throughout the video.

One thing i do find interesting is the end of the song where is says "You can run from your demons until you are exhausted, but one day you'll have to stop and find out what they wanted" is trying to say maybe Charlie should have seen what was the problem first before deciding he wasn't supposed to be there. Then the next line is "You can run to those angels until you are exhausted, one day you'll have to stop and question what they wanted" is signaling that even though Charlie did "good" in his life he never actually knew what they wanted and was basically just working for appearances rather than being good to his core

    lyrics to Charlie's inferno
    Here lies Charlie
You can tell it's him 'cause we put his name on the stone
He kept his showers ice-cold, used eco-friendly lightbulbs
Rode his bicycle to work when the gasoline price rose
He'd judge with no pretense, fish on the weekends
Each morning, get up, do the Pledge of Allegiance
Never swim in the ocean, for fear of shark attacks
Bi-monthly get his wife a rose with a card attached
Avoiding all the little things that were hard to ask
Had a car crash, cardiac arrest, died of a heart attack
Golden escalator, all his friends and neighbors
Huddled there in prayer around the respirator
"Catch you later, I'm off to see the man upstairs!
They all look like ants from here, stars and crystal chandeliers!"
There was an angel at the entrance, checking off a guest list
Charlie wasn't on it, and was ushered to the exit
    His heart sank
    He was breathless
    "Excuse me, sir!
There must be someone you've confused me for
If I could see someone who knew me or someone in uniform
I go to church on Sunday
    Truly, usually more!"
Screaming at the angels while they pushed him through the door
    "Excuse me, sir!
There must be someone you've confused me for
If I could see someone who knew me or someone in uniform
I go to church on Sunday
    Truly, usually more!"
Screaming at the angels while they pushed him through the door
"Abandon all hope, all ye who enter"
It was a horrifying sign, but sounded like a neat adventure
Far beyond the halos and the castles in the clouds
Fatsos squealing, shackled with some apples in their mouths
Attention whores in padded bras hanging from extension cords
Tortured with the products from their favorite catalogs
Here, we buy and sell a million kinds of Hell
Imagination is the limit to the devil's clientele
Up a dingy elevator, no televised debate
Will save you from the Hell you paid for, sorry buddy, smell you later
Side-stepped fate, went right for the gate
But you know the devil, he loves a good chase
There was a demon at the entrance, making X's on a checklist
Who would kick you in the ass when you begged him for repentance
Those tempted by the senses with the cruelest of intentions
Charlie's heart sank, he was breathless
    "Excuse me, sir!
There must be someone you've confused me for
If I could see someone who knew me or someone in uniform
    I really don't belong here
I know you've heard the tune before!"
Screaming at the demons while they pushed him through the door
    "Excuse me, sir!
There must be someone you've confused me for
If I could see someone who knew me or someone in uniform
    I really don't belong here
I know you've heard the tune before!"
Screaming at the demons while they pushed him through the door
You can run from your demons until you are exhausted
One day, you will have to stop and find out what they wanted
Keep on running from those demons 'til you are exhausted
You can run to those angels until you are exhausted
One day, you will have to stop and question what they wanted
Keep on running to those angels 'til you are exhausted
    "Excuse me, sir! (I don't)
There must be someone you've confused me for (want to)
If I could see someone who knew me or someone in uniform (die)
    I really don't belong here (please don't)
I know you've heard the tune before! (Let me die)"
    "Excuse me, sir! (I don't)
There must be someone you've confused me for (want to)

Does anyone really do anything for truly selfless reasons? Even if you do something good just for the sake of being good, that's still just trying to achieve the satisfaction of doing a good thing. I doubt there is a way to truly do something that isn't tainted by your own desire to enjoy life. If you could go to hell for not being "genuine" enough in your goodness, then everyone who dies would probably go there.
