It made both the characters sad too, I think. I didn't like Mary much; she seemed a little spoiled. She asked a lot of Arthur but gave very little in return. I do think she loved him on some level, though.
I helped her because it was the decent thing, not for her or the honour. Except for insulting people who deserve it, and stealing treasure maps and robbing homesteads and the like (non-lethally, when possible), I'd find a low-honour playthrough too repellent. Guess I'd make a lousy outlaw, or at least a lousy bad one.

I'm gonna be honest... I didn't give a fuck about Mary. I only helped her for the honor.

I wouldn't help her at all, I wouldn't even show up to her missions. I find dignity better.
