- The Lockheed YF-12 was an American prototype interceptor aircraft, which the United States Air Force evaluated as a development of the highly-secret Lockheed A-12 that also spawned the now-famous SR-71 Blackbird.
Almost 50 years later, still the most bad-ass thing ever built by man.
I understand & I am reading Richard Graham’s book at the moment that this aircraft couldn’t pull High G. But what simply amazing aircraft these were. Brian Shull’s photos are just brilliant.
They did actually built the right one. America was never under threat of invasion so an interceptor was never really needed. Spying on others was more important.
I saw an SR71 at the Chicago Air Show in the early 1980s. You had the feeling it was flying as slow as it could go...and had enormous power that wasn't being tapped for the flyby.

I find the nexus between the YF-12 and the F-14 (Phoenix missile system) and the B-52 bombers(used to test the drone versions) to be fascinating and ironic.

The YF12A + Heavy Missile combo would re-emerge in the concept of the "Nuclear Umbrella"; a tactic where AIM missile delivered "small" nukes of 15--25kt yield would be rushed up high for launch from the YF12A's under fuselage weapons bays. Reaching the ionosphere three minutes after aircraft take-off, they would detonate simultaneously, forming a high altitude disruption+ EMP layer meant to disable incoming ICBMs. Buck Rogers would ride again! I saw a film on it at the Lewis Research Center, back in '66 or '67.
That had to be something to see.... Awesome.

They actually had a version as a strike bomber. Because it threatened the F-111 (MacNamara's pet project) so in 1968, all the blueprints and tooling were destroyed at MacNamara's order...
The F-111 was a better strike bomber
If this would have been produced then intercontinental ballistic missiles would become obsolete and replaced with armored bombers.

ACfireandiceDC, actually the sr-71 went 3000mph+ to launch the MD21 that crashed in a test. so the sr-71 is still faster
+Perf Tulsa the fastest was A-12 speed 3,65-3,7 Mach.He had a special coating that reduces friction. Only this Blackbird had this. The YF-12 and SR71 are low skilled planes
+SHOCKWAVE You are total wrong.The SR-71 want not the D-21!!!! It was upgraded A-12 named M-21
what about the a-12. No one cares about it any more even no it pretty much started that generations of aircraft's Dx
