I REMEMBER when the dealers windows were covered in brown paper until the announced introduction of the new models - I've seen crowds 3-4 deep waiting on the sidewalk for the paper to be removed and the doors opened.
In 1964, I owned a brand new Dodge Dart. I T-boned a 1955 DeSoto. I dented the right front door. The door still opened and closed. The Dart needed a new bumper, headlights, grille, radiator, fan, water pump, hood and left front quarter panel.
Betty Grable and her husband Harry James were in a 1955 car commercial for the new 55 DeSoto, Groucho Marks was in the back seat. Marilyn was not there, she only rode in Cadillacs
I REMEMBER the dealership's windows being covered with brown paper until the announcement date, and different makes were introduced on different dates... That's when automakers had something to show - not the bland, generic 'car' being offered today.
I'll take 2 55 DeSotos: A wagon and a convertible. Notice the car in the showroom was stick shift. Not many were made that way. I've seen only 1 in my lifetime.
hah yeah shooting wad was not vulgar back then :) The wad was from rifle shooting... when you shot a blank wad... they did use some old time slag a bit in this one
Bill Kennedy and Joe Walker got chewed out in the back room because they didn’t sell enough new Desotos. Kennedy stormed off the job and Walker got so mad he stunk up the toilet. Then using extra paper he stopped up the bowl causing it to overflow into the sales floor. The owner ushered Joe out of the building. Because he lost his job his demonstrator car was taken away from him and he had to stand at the bus stop for 50 minutes in a cold driving rain.
@@autochronicles8667 The last Desoto orders were filled with 1961 Chrysler Windsors, which had become the mid-level model with the introduction of the Newport.

Wow, if I had a 1954 De Soto, I would hate it aftter watching this!
I had a '55 Firedome and a '56 Fireflight. Excellent cars
That was 1958-1964
56 is my favorite, but I wouldn't kick a 55 out of the garage!
I hung out with my Dad at the local DeSoto dealership ,so I love big fins!

full frames work!
No comparison between 64 and 55! Although 64s were nice cars, too.
Excelent cars in 55, 56 Chrysler too. Out west in the mtn states and no traffic we ran them 90 to 100 all day.
It's amazing how variable speed windshield wipers are not available today--and it'd be great to have.
i think the variable electronics tend to cause heat/corrode and its suspect...
OF COURSE they are..
I have them in my 2002 Pontiac Firebird.
Also in my 1991 Park Avenue and 2003 Rodeo Sport.
I dare say there's not a car being built that doesn't have this feature.@@TheDejael
15:25 "Yeah, it's got a Hemi"
My Dad had two DeSotos! a early 50s and a 58!
Dig the '58s.

I think she rode in imperials also
@@darthhemi1735 Yes, she was in Chrysler commercials
Chrysler is moving the assembly plant of Jeep Cherokee from Belvidere Illinois to Toluca Mexico. 😢. How does the UAW like Biden now!?
The company told all the employees “Merry Christmas. You’re fired.”
DeSoto won’t have a frame in a few years. The body will be integrated with the frame.
It’s Delightful! It’s Delovely! It’s DeSoto!
Betty Grable sent me here.
she did?
What about Marilyn Monroe?
@@dave1956 What about her?
@@chrisjeffries2322
I may be wrong but I think Betty Grable’s heyday was the ‘40’s. My father had a pin up of her during WW II.
Did he really say "They shot their wad"? 😂😂
well i think the 50's it didn't mean what it does today... :) but yes he did...
Yes he did!
Say, did I mention I had a 57 Fireflite when I was in high school in 1971?
Very cool car to be cruising around in :)

Yeah definitely there was more excitement about vehicles back in the day... They are simply appliances now mostly.
In just a few years DeSoto will be no more. (1961)
Desotos were pretty cool cars, and right up there in prestige... at a higher level than Buick actually just slightly
Hard to believe. I would always buy a DeSoto over a Chrysler.

they are super rare beasts... I've seen a few... but 50's mopars are always rare... people didn't value them until just recently.
I had no idea “shot their wad” went that far back. Or that it wasn’t vulgar.
hah yeah shooting wad was not vulgar back then :) The wad was from rifle shooting... when you shot a blank wad... they did use some old time slag a bit in this one
Also, you could be gay in '55 and it only meant happy!
Civil War. Stuffing wads of cotton down your rifle barrel

lol yeah... one too many mid priced brands for Chrysler... or just get a New Yorker/Saratoga?

Did 56 DeSotos with stick shift use 55 dashboards? Maybe some DeSoto experts know.
Back then a sentence was started with the word SAY, now a sentence is started with the word SO 😂😂😂😂😂
Maybe next it will be “Say So”
Another common reply of the era was “I’ll say”.
OMG TUBELESS? THATS SO DANGEROUS :) and no knee knockers when getting in the front door!
This would be a lot better without the lame, distracting colorization.
not sure about distracting but it did do a piss poor job on this one.
Nah, it's alright as is.
Shot their wad?
yeah got to love the old references. They didn't intend a pun.
