Hey guys, I see a lot of comments saying “she does no work” or “show us what you actually code and not other things”. There is a form called an NDA which restricts me from speaking or showing intellectual property of the company I’m working for. Showing such internal tools or code would be grounds for termination of employment. Please understand that even if I showed you my screen I’d have to blur things out. Also here is my latest video about SWE Expectation VS Reality! ruclips.net/video/aSquBQuo_74/видео.html
you work @WeEat?
i believe you. When I interned last summer at my now IT Programmer Analyst job we have a policy about sharing company data and how its prohibited.
I am surprised they let you film at all...
this prove she does not work lmao, shes lying
@@web3wizard381 wah what an ignorant. u never sign NDA?
"runs the same code again praying for it to work". I felt that in my soul
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Well, it actually worked for me a few times.. I guess it was some "bug" from the IDE I use (Visual Studio) cause I didn't change anything and magically my code worked or other way arround... :))
some time u just need to restart IDE for real🤣
@@dannylones2159 Sometimes you just have to restart your pc lol
😂
Damn that part where u showed the struggle - the googling the stackoverflow all of it 😞✌🏻 too real
ikr ? =)) dam that's what is to be a programmer
Yeah, I remember one time I was at work and I had an issue with the code I couldn't figure it out and I tried stackoverflow and the site was down and I started to freak out :)))) but it was back within some minutes
Oh yeah, so real. We get such an authentic look at what it's like! Like, you know? What it's like??? ;D
"Typically after lunch we do more work..."
Me: Ya don't say....🤔
Lol
😂
jesse536801 She probably meant that she is more productive after lunch
Wow the part where she struggled got me. I always thought people in these positions had it all together and never struggled. I work in the tech field and I’m always confused and trying to figure shit out.
@Jared Dudley Yeah. The coding we did at my university for CS was minimal. If I hadn't had any other experience, I'd know next to nothing about programming even though I was pretty good at every coding class. CS isn't really about coding though, that's what most people don't seem to understand. Coding was actually the easiest part.
You got it all wrong. I've been a developer for over a year in London. I'm telling you 20% is meetings, 30% is programming and the other 50% is staring at your code wondering what to eat and why you code won't work and then noticing you missed a semi-colon or something like that
people struggle in every profession.
@Jared Dudley Are you even a developer? Your comment "a lot of these people struggle" shows your lack of experience.
I program for game development, but one thing all of us seem to have in common is spending an entire day fixing some stupid bug 💀
† † † U.S And then praying it works, and when it don’t. Slam your head on the desk and do it again lol
An entire day is not that much.. I work in an automotive multinational company and currently I'm working on the autonomous car ECU... oh god, I had some huge issues with ethernet and registers and it took me a month once to fix a stupid small error...
Just a tip, you should floss before you brush as brushing your teeth will soften your gums leaving them more prone to damage when flossing.
Dylan 😂 hahaa
Useless tips hahaha
@@jeet9058 you got gum disease
Love your video.....cool sense of humor. I like how you showed yourself being stuck and trying to figure out what to do next.
like 8 out 10 of these "Day In The Life: Software Engineer" Shows more about the food and toys at work , than the working part it self :S
This is bc we’re not allowed to film the work. We could maybe film working without the screen, but then you’d just be watching someone sitting at their computer.
@@salsaSamuel If you don't learn about the work part, it just seems like any office job lmao
Love these type of videos, and by far one of my favorite day in the life of a software engineer!
I must say i really enjoyed watching what you do. Didnt think i would be interested but before i knew it i watched the whole video. Thanks
As a fellow programmer-- I'm in a different world. You, big city... me, a farm 😆😆 you see buildings, I see horses & cows. Weird. But cool! Our code connects us 👍
I live in NYC. What I would do to ride a horse to work.
@@Jfofito You could totally do it! All you need is a ride-able horse! Any jail-time would would worth it for sure - lol!
Iowa?
I would love to see your day in the life video
It's been a while since you uploaded it, but the time you did it was my first time visit NYC and I freaking love it!!! I live in FL currently and soon as I see the knot I knew that is China Town!!! Last time when I was in the NYC is 3.1 and the afraid of COVID-19 was truly costing the enjoyment to me of the trip, can't wait to go back to visit and stay strong sis.
I have watched enough software engineer videos to realize they never take a shower in the morning
Well, personally I'm the same.. In the morning I just hate everyone and drink a lot of coffee
As long as it's done once a day at some in point it's fine
Better to shower at night before bed. I don't get how some people can shower in the morning and then go about their day out in the elements, then sleep without showering. 😶
@@nylanirvana2258 Personally, I can't stand not taking a shower before going out, or after practising.
@NylaNirvana Agreed, especially during summer. I'm more of a shower at night right before bed type of person. But of course, I shower right away after finishing the gym or anything physical.
This was really cool thanks for sharing!
NICE...yours has alot of details compared to other videos... am a student myself so vids like this help tell me what ill be getting into eventually
i’m a design student who’s trying to get an internship and this was great to watch. subscribed!
New York Gang !! Loved the video it was super good.
This is amazing, would love to see in a bit more detail the kind of tasks you are tasked to do
Well put
Thanks for featuring my song!
Thanks for recording this! I am preparing for graduation soon and still a bit indecisive of what field I want to fall into. Thanks for the help!
This video will never get old to me!
When she's like 7:44PM is lil bit late at night. Then there's me watching this at 2AM 🙄😂🤣
×2 😂
Well it is late if you have a 9-5 job and still have a workout session afterwards. Gotta make sure you have enough sleep or the next day at work is gonna be gruesome.
well,2AM is a lil bit early not late…
@@tuvu8394 What should i say, i start at 6am...
Actually sounds like a really laid-back and pleasant work environment, that's really nice to see, I'm happy for you on that account. Even though I know it isn't all plain-sailing and kickbacks, as your coding struggles showed.
At my 2nd to last job I had to get up at 5am every day, including weekends and I would work from then until around 2-3:30 pm and then leave one job and go to my 2nd job and work till around 7-9pm (as needed) except weekends, then I just had around 8-10 hours at the one job. Then I slink off home, collapse into bed and repeat.
I managed this for 3 1/2 years then I got burnt out and changed careers and left both jobs, but then I had to leave my new job last year because of mental health issues following another breakdown.
I then spent the end of last year to 2020 as I write now unemployed on disability, as I found I was never as well as I thought I was, but I kept some extra revenue through painting and selling miniatures (Warhammer though not just that) and then I started doing some minor IT course for an entry-level tech job (most likely helpdesk and something like software engineering would be a ridiculous dream since I'm not particularly bright).
I'm not sure why I'm telling people all this on the internet, but I saw this video and thought you seemed like a pleasant and charming human being. Things might occasionally be tough, but you come across as resilient, I'm sure you will/are doing well.
Awesom Content !
An actual day in the life... great vid!
Love this oneee 😍😍
looooool this was in the wework documentary
I love love love this vid!!! new fan xo
Do more videos like this ❤️ of your job
8:11 literally me everyday trying to code apps
Looks fun, great video
Do I see some San Pellegrino sparkling water? Now you can definitely work effortlessly and get that chiseled goals of the day done!
I loved this so much ! This is so insightful to see. As my internship got cancelled! Thank you :)))
That's sad, where did you apply at?
So it's just a chill day
So good to be in the Future.
I love the new ways of life and also dislike it sometimes
I'm hoping to get a good job like this one, thank you for sharing
Wow the work life balance looks incredible as a software engineer intern. I get in by 8 am and work until 5 pm with one hour lunch break. I have to work in plane view next my manager, also free food and drinks... I wish my company offered those
Sounds sad. Where do you work?
Sounds like a normal job
@@GameBrigade yeah, talking about videos like this one creating unrealistic expectations about work life
Do a house tour!! your house is so pretty!
What a dope job honestly
Who clicked on the video because the thumbnail said that she makes 38 dollars an hour?
this
Pretty low for a software engineer
@@theendurance shes an intern...
ZIRNZ Gaming Interns usually make the same rate as full engineers because they only work for 12 weeks. SWE Interns at hedge funds and unicorn startups like Uber make 60-70/hr!
Glomo Not even close. The range is $30-$50/hr at uber. Facebook pays their interns $8400/month which works out to be $49/hr if they work 40 hours a week. $38/hr as an intern is a high number; your average Americans in a govt or state job are lucky to get $38/hr.
Vality in first plan. Crazy!!!
i saw the stickers and instantly wanted to work there lol
I worked right next to you in SOHO at a co-working shared space called The Farm Soho.
Useful information since I am curious!😆
plz make a video on your journey in SE :)
wooow this office environment is so cooool.....i wanna work for this company
can we have a makeup routine omg soooooo flawless lol
Im so curious, i really want to know what you do there, are you developing improving their website or what, building new softwares ? i will really appreciate it if you respond, thanks :)
Robotic lifestyle! I am afraid of what is going to happen to me after getting into a job, I am doing CSE graduation, gonna finish within a year!
Lmaooo Wework more like we don't work.
LMAO
All laid off. Though their salaries are high anyways; just move to a low col area to absorb the hit.
Exactly
@Jay Quan No they're basically reducing operations to improve the revenue of the business model and scaling up from there.
i can relate to this too, have interned at wework for 3 months too doing application dev!
Can
We come there for three months
For internship im not from US
@@rajab4187 you'll have to apply? anyway WeWork is a company that provides shared workspaces, so i worked for a company that was a tenant at WeWork, not directly under them :) if you've got your internship accepted then i don't see why you cant apply for a short term visa..
While I appreciate this being honest, time is one of those things that shouldn't be overlooked. While your day might be starting at 10, depending on the time zone it could be noon somewhere else. It's good you showed the standup meeting too.
Question: what college did u attend to earn your degree? And when did you decide to move to the city for your job?
Hey! What degree did u do at uni? Currently aspiring to be where u are!
Hello Meredith, thank you for making this video! I found it to be very informative :). I have a few questions for you, if someone is interested in pursuing engineering and business should they pursue both (through a program like MET) or get an engineering degree undergrad and then get an MBA? Are there different career benefits for each path or are they similar? Thank you!
The idea of MET was so that you don't have to get an MBA
Alcohol at work?? ISSA TRAP! 🤣
5:42 The board game PANDEMIC triggered me.
Now everyone is playing it lol
Hello. What programming languages you work with? Also which one is your favorite and your last favorite?
I am a full time software developer (I graduated 2 years ago, now I am in the last year of Information Security master) in an automotive company (working on the autonomous car right now) and am using C and C++ at this moment. My all the time favorite language is python cause is extremely easy and the one that I hate with all my soul is java..
Have more vlogs of software 🙌🏾🙏🏽🤙🏽
Lunch break timings and sneaking texts at work. Those make sense in a factory or entry-level manual labor job but feel out of place in a software engineering profession. Most jobs I've heard of don't care what you do or if you take a million breaks as long as the work gets done accurately on schedule.
Can you do a video of what languages you know, which IDEs you use, and what you took in university, I'm an aspiring programmer, has learned Java so far, up to JavaFX, not threading yet, I want to to get into this field but I have a Bachelor of Arts,
I really just wanted to ask, why did you use a cup to rinse your mouth (just curious) I’ve never seen that before lol
You can drink so work... I do this while I learn to code 😂🤣😂🤣. I'm sold, sign me up.
In every tech companies that I worked it weren’t like this it’s always pressure and too much work. I work as a SE in test which I do a lot of breaking and fixing.
Well, it depends on your way to see the things. I am sometimes verry stressed at work but sometimes I am extremely relaxed, it depends on the individual tasks or the project/teams I am working with (I am a software developer in an automotive company, working on the ECU of autonomus car "of the future").
@@_mariuca_ Good for you though. I believe it becomes a pressure cooker when the proj mngr doesn't understand what's going on and likes making promises to stakeholders. After this pandemic it's time to move on. I just want to add I was actually had an offer in Virginia as an SE developing autonomous vehicle as well but I chose my current job. Now I'm regretting it why I didn't take the offer.
You didnt mention exactly what you do for WeWork and what language you use to code.
By the way, I also live in NYC :P
She mentioned brew during her meeting so I am guessing JavaScript/node.js
Who is singing that outro tho? She’s really good💕
I know this is late but it's "No Guidance" by Tinashe.
you have a great informative channel i just subscribbed
So do you take 6$ shake on a daily basis while commuting to work or is it just for the video?
hi! you look much happier at your spare time rather at work ))
I love this video and your job looks so awesome! I just started learning how to code :> Quick question tho, do you ever tire out from coding everyday? I know software engineering is a difficult job so I was wondering how you manage to handle the constant work and stress (plus male dominated environment)
MysticSone♡ i don’t tire out because I see it as problem solving! It’s like a puzzle I want to solve. I get frustrated sometimes but coding itself isn’t ever boring. There is a lot of stress especially if you’re in a hyper growth company or a startup, but it’s not too daunting because you set out small goals to reach the end larger goal. Also yes the environment is definitely heavily male dominated but my team is so great!! They do a great job, whether it’s subconscious or conscious, of making me feel valued and my opinion feel important. I never ever feel lesser than and I have also always been comfortable around guys! I always vibe with their demeanor more
Meredith Mao Thanks so much !! that was rly insightful and I’m glad that you love your job ^-^ Best of luck for your future !!
I’m studying mechanical engineering! Im taking matlab next semester. Do you have any suggestions on how to excel in this course or, in fact, in engineering in general?
Try to find youtube videos for these courses. I also use chegg to see if I'm doing the book problems correctly. RUclips came in handy for mechanics of materials and dynamics for me.
Austin Smith Thank you so much!
Hello, My name is Juan. I want to ask you a question about what book do you recomend to learn coding
What kind of workhours are normal in the states? - 9.30 am seems late to start? I usually start between 7.30 and 8.30 am.
SodaDK 9am to 5pm with 30 minute break
To make your package installable via Homebrew, you put it in a GitHub repo and create a release. Then you create a tap, a repo containing at least one formula. The formula is a Ruby file pointing to a downloadable tarball of the package, with instructions on how to build and install it.When a user downloads your package, the tarball is saved to /Library/Caches/Homebrew. It gets unzipped and, depending on the formula, parts of the package are copied to /usr/local/Cellar//. This directory, in the user’s cellar, is called a keg. To make writing formulae easier, you can use variables for directory locations. For example, bin.install foo will create /usr/local/Cellar///bin/foo, use chmod to make sure foo is executable, and create a symlink from /usr/local/bin/foo to foo in the cellar.
Your tone changed quite a bit when u were in that room with fellow intern, compared to the morning cereal part. That was interesting lol
What's your qualifications ? Or you went to bootcamp ?
Since you were able to work in WeWork, are they still alive and running now?
basically this video is about food and how to get help when you have an error in your code.
So what happens when you can't figure out why something isn't working? Is this looked at as sort of a negative performance thing as a software engineer?
Who helps when we stuck with code ?
Do you need to pass any license or exams to be a engineer after you have a CIS in bachelor degree ?
Omg I wanna work there
❤️
you making it look like a nightmare the career of software engineer is it really like that all software engineers stuck all time
I liked the video. I am just curious about the name of the company you working on? because during the video I saw my flag of my country. Which is Djibouti. Djiboutienne people don't travel that much to other countries. Lol
What?? You wake up 8:24 am to goto work???? Lol damn
Allison Om yeah she lives around 23rd and canal is like 3 stops from there so it’s like a 6-7 min train ride. I also live in manhattan and it’s so easy to get to work when you live and work in Manhattan.
Is it okay to change my career from a pharmacist to a software developer?
8:22 buy blue light filter glasses with that check lol. real ones
$38/hr!? Time to hit the books heavy. I'd be happy with $28/hr. I see that WeWork building everyday. She works right around the corner from me lol.
Again!!
More about eating then working😉
Well I guess I can get a job now as a programmer. Now that I see how you all struggle with coding. I not even a programmer
since it became popular to make a day in life videos this video one in million can proof that software engineer actually can speak :D (no offence, i'm SE too)
Are you a full time ?
Is tattoo allowed in tech companies like Google, Microsoft & Apple?
work or generate code problems?
How every one is on there social media at the table!
Where is your top from?
are you staying in an airbnb during your internship? it's so nice there!
thaatsdopee bet u 100$ her parents pay
Did you feel uncomfortable filming at work? I wanted to try to record my day, but I felt like it was super awkward to film stuff. Also, I was nervous about snippets of code showing up in my video.
Evan Gertis yes!! I was nervous at first but luckily nobody in my office really noticed or cared. I just made sure not to film any proprietary information and if I did to just cut it out during editing or blur it!
@@MeredithMaonice
I am a software engineer too and my personal advice would be: not record snippets of code (in my multinational company this is not a good thing) because you can be "punished" afterwards. The recording of the office is not a problem as long as you don't show sensitive information like papers, code, meeting notes, emails, etc
