I am from Igbanke and when we were under Bendel state we were called Bendel Igbo.
These guys you interviewed are not learned or exposed to say. You should have ask them names of body parts in Igbanke dialect or ask them to count one to ten and see if there's any difference to the Igbo names.
In Igbanke we have a community called Ngbidi which I believed is also found in Imo state.
Igbanke are of the Igbo ancestory. Same 4 market days and new yam festival etc.

The first man was correct with the pronunciation of their community's name,he called it Igboakị which is more close to the original pronounciation"Igbo Akiri".
When the former Bendel State was split into Edo and Delta states, Igbanke along with few other Igbo communities were carved into Edo state, the state's government failed to recognize Igbo as one of the languages of the state, resulting in Igbo not being taught in schools, so they started feeling a sense of isolate, also they were made to believe that Igbos are only those in the southeast.
Since that time Igbanke and its neighbouring Igbo communities have been battling with identity crises, some of them will tell you that they speak Igbanke language, how can one community be an ethnic group? Some of them did not actually know that they belong to a major ethnic group in Nigeria.
Thanks in part to the new generations of Igbanke, most of them now identify as Igbo and they have the Igbo spirit.

The esan man don't do same thing with the bini man neither does the owan man nor the ika man...the so-called Benin empire is a collection of same blood line that started their own families. rumours have it we are hebrews and the igbos are nothing but renegades of that empire/family that's why the ika and ebanke can't say they are igbos.
The igbos left because they wanted to be a different people of their own that's why to this day they have no form of leadership.
Note a son can't carry his father so the igbos should stop trying to say ika and ebanke are igbos rather they should trace where they belong among the ika or the ebanke.
Well I most state that the arrogance of the bini kingship cos this conflict that's eating us to this day if not this won't be happening.

My respect! My respect man for your patience. According to a very smart Igbo writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, those Igbos who are denying their tribe are doing what she called "Political Identification" and not "Cultural Identification." When the going gets tough for them, they turn back to Cultural Identification. For example, I heard Governor Wike singing a hardcore Igbo traditional song used for Igbo burial rituals for men. All along, he has used Political Identification to enrich himself and denied that he is not an Igbo man. After squandering his loot trying to secure his party's nomination for the office of the president, reality set in when he got played and lost both getting the nomination and being chosen as a running mate. Who did he call, ghost buster?

    History tit-bits!
The boundaries that carved some Igbo communities in Northern Protectorate(Now Benue) were drawn by the British Authorities in 1902 under Tubman Goldie's Company by the creation of Southern Protectorate and Northern Protectorate before the name Nigeria was even suggested
The second boundary that further split Igbos into western Region and Eastern Region was drawn by Benard Bourdillion in 1939 and was parts of 1946 Nigeria Richards Constitution (Then Western Region Capital was Ibadan, region includes present Edo and Delta States)
After the Creation of Midwest Region in 1963 by Balewa Government, Igbo communities West of the Niger River was carved into Midwest Region.
The third boundary that further split Igbos was again drawn by Yakubu Gowon as part of his War Efforts in 1967, Gowon Split the then Eastern Region into 3 States(East Central, Rivers and South Eastern States)
The fourth boundary line was again drawn by Ibrahim Babangida in 1991 with Creation of Delta and Edo from Bendel States and dicing Igbanke to Edo State.
Between Tubman Goldie, Benard Bourdillon, Tafawa Balewa, Yakubu Gowon and Ibrahim Babangida one thing seem common
All bourdaries within Igboland were drawn without any Igbo input or suggestion some against Igbo interest, all by non-Igbos
    History Food for thought!

      Bro, please adjust your thinking.
As a community, they are not from Bini, their communities were established by Igbos which is indicated by their names. So they are Igbos.
Even if there are some Bini people among them,it doesn't matter. For example,in Nnewi, you'll find Hausa people, does is mean that Nnewi should stop being Igbo?
In Benin City, there are many Igbo people who live there, some have built houses, should that make Benin city to change ethnic identity?
The same thing is true with ibadan, Calabar, uyo etc.
Another possibility is intermarriage, those people that have Bini surname it could be that their great grandma was married from Bini.
Above all,it is only one community that have a significant amount of Bini people, this community speaks a mixture of Igbo and Edoid, but other communities speaks normal ika Igbo dialect.
We don't have to leave our own, reason Wella bro!

@@ndubuisiezeoye2099 we can only speculate. Nobody knows the exact facts. But if you use inference and dissect, it makes sense that the majority of Ika came from Igbo. Then, there was a significant migration wave from Bini, where they borrowed their customs and culture. But they couldn't borrow their language because the Igbo population was more. They have been under Bini's umbrella for centuries, that they probably forgot they came from Igbo. But some places like Igbodo and Umunede still remember that they came from the East.

    • @ndubuisiezeoye2099
      @ndubuisiezeoye2099 2 года назад +1

@@chiozo11 what I'm saying is that, since those communities were established by Igbo people, any Bini migration in the area doesn't matter,
You are not correct by saying that they've been under Bini umbrella for centuries, before, there was no such word like ika,all Igbo communities in the west of the Niger identify simply as Igbo even their Edo neighbors calls them ovbigbo(Ndị Igbo).
It was in the 1860s when the Igbo language was being prepared to have a writing system that the word ika was formed, during that time there was nothing like state, so inorder to analyze their dialects so as to prepare a general standard Igbo for all the Igbos, Igbo language scholars divided them into three according to their dialects.
      They are;
      Igbanke region--I
      Kwale (Ụkwụanị) region--k
      Aniocha region--A
This was how the word ika was formed, Igbo was added to it, that is Ika-Igbo,it was given to all of them in the west of the Niger as their general name,
During the war in 1968, inorder to appear separate from Igbo because of the war, they desperately started looking for an identifying name, that former Igbanke region took that general name to themselves and removed that Igbo added to it, as a result of this Aniocha and kwale regions abandoned the name.
After the war in1970, some of them started changing and rewriting history that was how they got under that "Bini umbrella", but actually they are not up to 30% Edotic, they are more Igbo than Edo.
If your mother or grandma is from Bini and give you Bini name, should that make you Bini? No! Because you belong to your father.
As for their festivals,it is a normal thing to borrow culture, afterall Edo also borrowed somethings from Igbo, and they are still bearing Edo. Akwa ibom people and Abia/Imo people does ekpe festival,we don't know the tribe that borrowed it from the other.
As a matter of fact, most of those Igbanke festivals are actually Igbo culture, it's just that they were renamed during the time of ogbemudia who wanted to Edolize them.
When it comes to that one community which is a mixture of Igbo and Edoid, there is no way one community will stand as an ethnic group, so they'll have to join Igbo which is their closest in language.
Afterall, there is no tribe that you won't see other people who later become part of them.

    • @chiozo11
      @chiozo11 2 года назад +1

@@ndubuisiezeoye2099 I've read in a book that was published before the war that Ika people said they migrated from Bini, which is probably false, but that is probably all they can remember. Now, and centuries before, they would have to answer to the Oba of Benin. Of course Ika came from Igbo, that's why their language follows an Igbo pattern. But they have probably branched off so far, and accepted so many Bini migrants, that they forgot about there migration from the East, and you cant blame them for what their parents told them. Only Igbodo and Umunede in Ikaland remember they came from the East.

Please continue this grand and noble mission of enlightenment and sensitization of igbo communities that have over the years branded themselves as not being Igbos, but the language and culture enriched with the core igbo signature and stamped with an identity could not conceal their denial and possible delusion that they are a totally different people with another unique language. The truth is hitting hard at their hearts and it is causing them to re-examin their position in terms of cultural identity and language similarities.

Nana Mehn.... You try in pronouncing Igbanke people Local Govt. The Igbanke people find it difficult to pronounce. Is like it was forced on them.
    Igbanke comprises of
    1. Otah
    2. Oligie
    3. Igbontor/Idumu-Iru
    4. Ake/Obiogba/Uwaya Ake
    5. Omolua and Onu-iyi
    6. Idumu-Odin
Igbanke people call their King as Eze or Obi eg. Eze Ake, Eze Otah, Eze Idumu-Odin, Eze Oligie, Eze Omolua.. or Obi eyin (our king) But, the government gave their Eze as Enogie via Oba of Benin but most of them call their King Eze
Their festival is called Egwu, if you are born during their this festival, you will be named Imegwu.
Igue is Benin traditional festival that was imported.
New generation Igbanke people don't bear Benin name.
In their greetings, male and female greeting same greetings in the evening (Anyansi) while in the morning/afternoon, the greet separate greetings... Elieh for male and La wueze for female.
    Their Welcome is Aluah.
80 to 90% of Igbanke dialects are Igbo Language,
    They bear name like
Azuka, Emeke, Ebonka, Imegwu, Ngozi, Ndidi, Emefiele, Omeke, Nwakaego, Amaechi, Nwaka, Okafor, Chukwuyem, Chukwuka, Nwachukwu
    They called their senior Diokpa.
    Male is called Okehen
    Female is called Okpoho.
Who is your king is translated in Igbanke as Onye Wu Eze Onu.
In the midnight is call Ime Abali in Igbanke.
    Evening is call Anyansi
    Morning is called Otuntun
    Fire is called Okun
Yam is called Igi or Iji
    Suffering is called Afunfun.
    Iron is called Igwe
    Gasket is called Ekpetin
In Benin, they called IGBANKE people.. Owi Igbo while in Igbanke they called Benin people ... Ndi Iduh.
Asusu Igbanke is Complete Igbo... Don't debate it. If you debate it, go to Benin and tell them you are from Benin with such name like Eneke, Azuka, Obika, Ndidi. Cone back and tell us your experience.
Me I am from Igbontor Igbanke, I remove my Benin surname. REASON: I don't know the meaning whenever I am asked. I am tired of explanation of the name because I can't speak Benin

The people of Igbo Akiri will attain no political relevance in Edo state, they should align with their Igbo heritage and become the majority and stake holders in the grand scheme of things. Chiedo Ogbemudia used his people in Igbo Akiri as a political gambit after the war to gain political inclusion at the federal level by denouncing their Igbo identity. Igbanke is pure Ika Igbo, even though they have incoporated aspects of Benin culture by being included in Edo state. But remember that Idumu is related to the same Igbo name--Umu. The word "Umu" is used to denote quaters or kindred in Igbo land. The word "Igwe" in Igbo land denotes a king, Igwe can also denote a crowd of people depending on the contest. Remember that it was Samuel Ogbemudia that incoporated Igbanke people (Igbo-akiri) into Edo state, because his mother was from there.

What we are seeing among these Igbo communities is a well engineered ignorance, ignorance is the highest disease o,something that can make you work against yourself, the people don't know the difference between language and dialect.

I don’t know what this guy’s agenda is. Why all of a sudden are they interested in labelling other people as igbos? The fact is that the we are NOT Igbos. We are Igbankes. That you have some similarities with another tribe doesn’t make you that tribe. For example Itsekiri language share some similarities with Yoruba, but they are Itsekiri, not Yoruba. Using kolanuts as example is laughable, because Kola is common to many tribes in Nigeria. This guy is just too manipulative, selectively interviewing people and putting words into people’s mouth. He imposes his opinion on people, trying to force people to agree that they are Igbos. The fact is that we are not Igbos. We are Igbanke people. We are not of Igbo ancestry.

The two men you interviewed pronounce the name of their local government differently. Reason: it is not their language.
If you see any Igbanke person, ask him or her to Spell their local ? PROBLEMS Ohhhhhhh.

There are languages and there are dialects. The Yorubas have yoruba language and have Ijebu, ijesha, Egba, Ibadan, Ekiti, Ondo, egun etc dialects. All sounding slightly different. When an Ijebu man speaks his Ijebu, the rest of the yorubas might not understand. Yet they are all yorubas. The Igbo language has Owerri, Ngwa, wawa, ikwerre, anioma, mbaise, arochukwu etc dialects.
The civil war really dealt with the Igbos. Suddenly some Igbos are not sure of their ndigbo-ness anymore. Some chose to deny their identity!
