I agree, SUDDEN moments of reveal is more of a shock than say you notice a figure standing at the end of a hallway, completely still but not screaming. You can scare someone without needing grotesque features or ear-piercing screams. Some of the scariest things are simply what we as humans fear at a natural level. Subnautica is a very good example of how horror can be more than just scary faces and jump scares.
