There's a cutscene where it's revealed that Alwin has an allergic reaction to felynes. When he sneezes you can see the background npcs actually reacting and emoting in response to his sneezes. A detail Pokemon can't even do with their main protagonist.

Really?! Haven't gotten the game, though it is coming, bought it late, prefer to pre-order in person, so couldn't do that. In the mean time, I've got Rise to pass the time.
Too bad Pokemon can't do something like that, most of their npcs are static until you approach them, or are just pacing back and forth. True that most of the npcs in the first Stories were kind of like that too, but at least they improved a bit if true in Stories 2. You'd think Pokemon would improve their npcs as well.

The sad part: Because Gamefreaks main game is Pokemon they don't need to put in as much effort.
Spin-off games from a franchise that outside of japan at least is smaller than Pokemon need to do more to harbor attention.
I do hope though that the more high quality monster collection games come out the more the Pokemon company feels pressured to actually release quality again. At their time the first Pokemon games were high quality but the improvements to the franchise have been quite lax.

@@reddragon4528 Ok. Sure, you are right. It was an early build. But it still doesn’t give me much faith on Game Freak. Aside from problematic graphics, they have major plot holes and storylines in games like X/Y and Sword/Shield. Random factories and such are talked about to only go nowhere. This is bad story telling. And don’t try to excuse them cause we are talking about a video game. Pokemon has anime movies, TV series and online shorts as well. The franchise relies heavily on storytelling and the games aren’t doing so hot in this area.

    • @reddragon4528

@@No-One-Important-Here ok, if you don't trust or have faith in gamefreak, alright then fine, I can't stop you from that, do as you wish it's your opinions. I personally loved Sw/Sh despite its flaws, and think legends arceus is gonna be very good, but that's just me.
As for the other things you said though, I do agree with the problems of x/y, that game was not good at all, but what plot holes in Sw/Sh are you talking about? I don't remember seeing any plot holes, can you give me some examples please, and more context about this factory thing your talking about.
As your the storytelling thing, ya... no, sorry but that's wrong. The mainline pokemon games have mostly never been reliant on story as the main focus of the game, it has always just been the gameplay itself. Yes, the anime tv shows and movies are about storytelling, but that's because... _they are tv shows and movies_ . Telling a story is the whole point of them. The mainline pokemon games aren't some Telltale games visual novel, it's not mainly about the story, sure the story is _part_ of the game, but it's certainly not the main focus of the games, and you can clearly tell this by looking at ANY pokemon game frim gens 1-8, with maybe the exception of b/w and b2/w2, those were the only games that seemed to focus a little more on story, and people panned GF for that (it was kinda stupid in my opinion honestly, i loved gen 5 and it's story), so it's clear that people also care more about the gameplay then story. Anyway, just because some medias in the pokemon franchise focus on storytelling, doesn't mean it's the most important thing that matters in every pokemon related thing. I fact, I'd go as far as to say that the whole point of the anime in the first place was to take the games they are based on, and add more lore and character development onto it, that way the people who just want to play the game don't have to sit through much of the story stuff other then the basic set up and events of the game, and the people who do care and want to learn more amcan watch the anime for a deeper dive into the world and the lore and characters, but those are just my thoughts, so you can take it with a grain of salt if you wish.

Need to correct you. With the exception of the Rage Rayed monsters, your rider doesn't actually KILL any opposing monsters. In fact the story beats mention how you "make them retreat". Heck the first mission with a partner, you're told that the monsters you fight are *fought frequently* by new riders since they aren't killed by the combat. The reason the menu and such lists the monsters as "slain" and the loot as Body parts is explicitly for the players of the mainline hunter games to not suffer culture shock. But as you can say from a Hunter game, it's satisfying seeing that monster finally enter that collapsing animation, thus victory is done the same way. Paintballs are the keystone to explaining this and what it means is that when the monster flees after the battle, you're able to follow it to it's den. The Quick Win function is your Rider showing the kinship stone and telling the opposing monster to retreat, which it does as it recognizes you as a superior, but the gameplay function has it collapse and you get body parts as loot from it.
Just figured you should know ^^

Money has nothing to do with this. People have the exact same misconception about animation. They think if a product look cheap, it means it has less budget behind it or if an episode is movie quality, that must means it has loads of budget behind it. It has everything to do with the right staff. Capcom probably has some of the best programmers and designers working for them. Gamefreak's staff specializes in working with very limited hardware and trying to get around this scale creep. They are way more familiar with how they design their cutscenes and battle system with limitation to avoid scope creep. It is a very smart way to make new games without overworking their employees but then we get a product is little to no flair.
MH stories, even on the 3ds, has massive amount of production value behind it but they are nowhere near the scope creep. Capcom is also very talented when it comes to making good looking games with recycled animation. Come like Mh stories 5, most enemies will animate exactly the same but it will just look way better. They also know how to do cutscenes. Gamefreak has done that with gen 7 but the series doesn't usually commit to full on prerendered scenes.

@@MayHugger Well, I guess I'd better bury all my games specifically designed by language teachers to teach people languages. Sarcasm aside, games are actually a great way to pick up new vocabulary and practice. I also often read manga in Japanese because I'm a bit iffy on reading Kanji still, so the furigana helps me to understand, and it helps practice reading and expanding vocabulary. Submersing yourself in a language is one of the absolute best things you can do to learn a language. Years ago in high school I took a Chinese class and our teacher straight up gave us a link to a streaming site and recommended watching shows in Chinese to help with learning pronunciation, expanding vocabulary and seeing how words are utilized in sentences. No, you shouldn't use these as your only source, but used alongside classes and traditional study methods, books, music, shows and games can really, truly help. Besides, learning languages is fun, but having a goal like "I want to be able to read this series" or "I want to play this game in this language and be able to understand it" help motivate people to improve. You can go ahead and study languages however you want, but telling people to avoid something they enjoy that can motivate and help them to study is doing them a disservice.

Not to mention the combat was way beyond my skill level. This is the perfect game for me and i've been enjoying it since it came out with no plan on stopping any time soon. Plus, i love the coop in the game - enough for my husband and I to do it together, but the rest of the game can just be on my terms solo XD
I hope some company sees the potential in doing something similar with the pokemon universe. Most people would be happy with only a small number of pokemon in a game. 500+ is unrealistic to create and animate not to mention collect and level. Most people would be good with 150 - 200. Thank you, thank you so much for sharing good opinion on this game. You gained a sub from me both for this review and the Pokemon rant at the end.
Quick note: the "Monstie" issue... I blame the english translators. Even if it translates literally like that from Japanese, they could just change how the dialog talks about your "monsties" (like partners, pets etc) in serious scenes. Personally I prefer the JP dub with ENG subtitles and it makes the dialog sound way less cringe all the way through.
While Stories 2 sold really well compared to 1 that sold only 300 000 copies (!), more people need to see the quality of this series. Maybe it is the more "child like" spin-off but unlike Pokemon it doesn't focus on being stupidly easy for children, it respects it's players, especially those that played the OG games because knowlege about certain monster in the main line actually helps you guess the type of attack it's gonna use most of the time. The fighting system also requires a lot of thinking, especially on last parts of the story and the high rank part of the end game, because you have only 3 lives, you can just suicide your "pokemon" until you win.
I've been waiting for a "harder" pokemon game for years and what I got on Switch was more child focused than what I played in the third generation era as a kid myself.
The old fanbase of at this point over 20 year old franchise are simply ignored by gamefreak, they don't want to put more effort than they need to to sell their games and all they need is a logo and splitting the games into two versions with one cool pokemon on the cover. The rest can be done as poorly as they wish, because until it sells, the quality doesn't matter to them.
And because of this approach we live in a world where we are happy when we get normal cutscenes in Pokemon like games. You understand that? Gamefreak milks us so much on main line that we are suprised when we get "animated cutscenes" and "good animations". It's actually kinda sad. I wish I had enough money to send a copy of MH Stories 2 to all Pokemon fans that said that Sword and Shield are amazing games and all the main Pokemon content creators, to show them that they are just not given what most games should have.
But for now I am a happy fan of MH series that not only gave me a series of games that gave me over 2000 hours of content at this point, but also a series of Pokemon like games that are better than Pokemon and include all my favourite monsters that I can truly ride in open great looking enviorments.
Also even though the story is pretty simple in it's overall shape, it has amazing characters and shows some good writing on the mystery ascpect that makes you engaged all the way through. Meanwhile Sword and Shield has plot so simple that I almost predicted all of it the moment the game starts to focus on story. It was one of the most dissapoinitng things about these games, because even with easy gameplay loop, you could at least enjoy the story. But it was shit and the final fights took themselves so seriously it was almost funny. You need almost no effort to finish them that it's also pretty sad.
Stories 2 not only bringed some new great characters that I will remeber longer than any of the speechles characters in SwS but also it took into the picture really interesting aspect of the relation between hunters and riders which I was actually curious about. And as the game explained hunters and riders live in MH universe like other animals. They build cities and respect nature but will kill Monsters if threatend or if they need materials nad food for themselves. They don't look at it like on sport, most of the times at least.
Taking the gameplay loop of killing a ton of monsters is not really a good argument that breaks this logic though. I don't remember the exact name of this fenomenon but basically the game will not take your overkilling of monsters as part of the story but gameplay will also not stop you, because that would be stopping the player from enjoying the fughting system. Same goes for main MH games and some RPGs like Witcher where Geralt clearly states a lot of times that he doesn't want to kill some of these creatures if he doesn't need to, because thry might be almost extinct etc. but the game will not stop you from slaughtering all the Leshens or other monsters on your way.
Off... sorry for such a long comment, but I had to say something while i'm here. I really hope for more great content like this video, it was nice to be able to say something about the Pokemon problem for once too. I'll be wating for the next material. Happy Hunting!

As an owner of a hacked switch, the games frame rate skyrockets when you overclock the CPU/GPU/memory and it looks fucking amazing. Played through the entirety of pkmn sword, and I had more fun in the first three hours of this game than I did the entirety of pokemon. Love it!

I started playing last week, it had a boring start but it grew on me. I can't stop playing now! When I fight new enemies, I'm like oh God will I be able to beat them?! Most of the time I win, maybe lose occasionally, but I can never get rid of the feeling of being intimidated by new enemies lol
I watched the Pokemon Arceus trailer earlier and decided I won't be getting it unless it ends up having the same quality as mhs2. Not worth $60 at all. I'm actually disappointed that not more people are playing mhs2, it's a bazillion times better than pokemon.

  • @vampbat
    @vampbat 2 года назад

I tried the demo for MHR and it was gorgeous, but I just couldn't get the controls/mechanics down. This game looks BEAUTIFUL, like how to train your dragon creatures, and much easier as an entry level game into the franchise. And I think there's a demo on switch too! Hooray

I'm late to the comment, but love the vid.
As far as pokemon on concerned. Even in their newest game out...they dont live up to MHS2. STILL! This now years old game....STILL beats out the newer pokemon game.
Honestly....i think gamefreak and nintendo have figured out pokemon. You make it cheap, JUST good enough to pass the sniff test, and shovel it out as fast as you can. They make tons of money, put in mnimal effort and sell it to a pre-installed audiance. They have proven to themselves...they dont have to be good. We the fans have shown gamefreak and nintendo, that we will still buy it. You can't convince enough people to boycott pokemon till they improve, so they never will. We will never see pokemon take the effort that Monster Hunter ever puts into their games.

  • @khgameplayer

I thought I'd dislike this game before trying it, but boy oh boy nope. The post-game is even addictive AND challenging. GameFreak wishes they could do what MHS2 has done this year. MH in general is killing it this year with Rise and Stories. Highly recommend both.

The switch has another good Monster collecting game: Nexomon Extinction! And Monster Sanctuary is on Switch too. And I love Yokai Watch, but sadly we never got the Switch release here in the West, so I'm probably the only one who enjoyed it... But yeah I agree. Definitely better than Pokemon....

I really want Yokai. I think I'm just going to import it soon and struggle. They brought over the first game so I think I'll replay that and get a hang of playing Japanese before trying the newer ones. I've played import games before and you kind of just start to be able to navigate

Or you know, I can just enjoy the series AND play something else. It's not one or the other. Pokemon still has quality character designs, lore, and locales. it is just the production values and stories that need to match up to being in an HD era. Gamefreak worked on handheld no mroe powerful than gamecube for the past decade. The games are just going to look and play better and better once they are familiar with their new engine and when we start getting truly powerful Nintendo system. There will come a time when a Nintendo system will be as powerful as the ps5 or series x with full on raytracing and 4k support. We just have to wait like 15 years for it.

Actually, id love to see nintendo let capcom make a metroid game in the style of resident evil, but as a member of the federation force. Samus can not be playable at all. Her suit can be unlockable by beating the game on a certain difficulty or with certain requirements just like resident evil. Or I guess amiibo unlock so long as it's not the only way... but yeah, I love to see capcom make a game in the metroid universe in the style of resident evil.
