  • In this video, I dive into the surprising reasons why going to Ranger School before Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) could actually hurt your chances of success. Many believe that the Ranger Tab is a badge of honor that will give them an edge at SFAS, but the reality is much more complex. From mental burnout to the false sense of preparedness, I’ll break down why the skills and mindset you gain in Ranger School might not be what SFAS demands. If you’re thinking about taking the Ranger route first, watch this before you make your decision!
    Key Takeaways:
    1. Why the Ranger Tab might set you up for failure at SFAS.
    2. The key differences between Ranger School and SFAS that you need to know.
    3. How overconfidence and burnout could sabotage your performance.
    4. Why the perception from cadre could work against you as a Ranger graduate.
    5. What you should focus on to succeed at SFAS.
Whether you’re considering Ranger School first or you’re already wearing the tab, this video will give you the brutal truth about how the two courses stack up against each other. Tune in for some unfiltered advice from a former Green Beret!

It's very simple, but many troops don't understand this. Going to SFAS is an interview for a job. It is not a school. You aren't there to "challenge" yourself or get a tab just to go right back to your unit doing the same job you were doing before. When you make the decision that you want to be an SF Operator, you make that priority #1 over everything else. You put all your work into preparing for SFAS and going as soon as you are ready (Follow the prep guide the recruiters give you). You attend Ranger or Sapper schools during the regular course of your career PRIOR to making the decision to attend SFAS in order to be a team guy. Once you go to that SF briefing (if they still do it), you get locked in and put your best foot forward.
Once again, SFAS is a job interview to get selected for a specialized job. Ranger and Sapper courses aren't worth risking your chances of getting selected. You need to eat and sleep SFAS, and then stay hungry to get through SFQC.

I remember one of my first days in SFAS in 2001. They asked all the infantry guys to raise our hands. They told us we had a better chance than non-infantry guys of being selected. They then asked us to raise our hands if we had a Ranger tab. They told those of us who raised our hand that we statistically have the best chance of being selected. Again that was in 2001 but the numbers were that those of us who were tabbed had a better chance and it seemed to play out that way as well.

The only benefit of going to Ranger school first is if you don’t have any patrolling experience. You hit the Q-Course with no patrolling experience and you’re fucked. Other than that you’re right. Getting recycled a shit ton of times at Ranger school will fuck up the cartilage in your knees and once that’s gone your career is over. In my humble opinion, it depends if you’re going back to back Ranger school to SFAS, then the possibilities of you getting injured is greater.
However, if you’ve been tabbed for a couple years, and then go to selection, you won’t have a problem.
In fact, in one of the links that I uploaded in a prior comment on SFAS in that survey conducted by the school house said that guys with the Ranger tab normally got selected.

Marines dont fight fair, if there is 2 enemies they send 5, if there are 30 enemies they send 50 marines. While the army is so stuck on being by the book . Everything he is addressing in the video is based around the premise that an individual has decided to attend SFAS to become a Green Beret. The decision has been made and that is what they are prepping to accomplish, but then one of their leaders offers them a Ranger or Sapper slot just before SFAS. Well, here is the reality of attending Ranger School that I think wasn't addressed by the MSG, you have to be prepared to be at Ranger School for 2-6 months. Yes, you could very well get rolled back to another class for failing a graded exercise or suffer an injury during one of the phases, and you have to stay because coming back without that tab isn't an option (I've seen guys stay there for months).
It is a major risk if your plan is to become an SF Operator and that is why you don't deviate from your plan for attending SFAS just to attend a school that you can go to after taking care of business becoming an SF Operator. If you don't have your tab after making up your mind to attend SFAS, you put it on the backburner and get that Green Beret first.
