It's very simple, but many troops don't understand this. Going to SFAS is an interview for a job. It is not a school. You aren't there to "challenge" yourself or get a tab just to go right back to your unit doing the same job you were doing before. When you make the decision that you want to be an SF Operator, you make that priority #1 over everything else. You put all your work into preparing for SFAS and going as soon as you are ready (Follow the prep guide the recruiters give you). You attend Ranger or Sapper schools during the regular course of your career PRIOR to making the decision to attend SFAS in order to be a team guy. Once you go to that SF briefing (if they still do it), you get locked in and put your best foot forward. Once again, SFAS is a job interview to get selected for a specialized job. Ranger and Sapper courses aren't worth risking your chances of getting selected. You need to eat and sleep SFAS, and then stay hungry to get through SFQC.
I’m in the national guard I get shipped out this coming up Monday, there’s a program called RTLI where they’ll send you to ranger than airborne, and once home they put you into a training unit with 19th or 20th SFG till your ready to go to SFAS
As someone who as been to both Ranger school and Q course. I attended Ranger school as an 11B because I wanted to be a better Infantryman and mentor for my younger soldiers. Having been an 11B for a while Ranger school didn’t teach tactics it was more of a gut check. The one thing I learned in Ranger school was how to suck and keep moving forward. I learned where my physical limits were and how to overcome them. This lesson isn’t in the POI but a great life lesson. Having gone to Ranger school at the age of 30, my body took a beating and it took me about 4 months to feel better again with working with Physical Therapist and Chiropractic care. I went to SFAS two years after Ranger school, my body had healed by then. I didn’t wait that long because of injuries. I just enjoyed being an 11B. SFAS, I felt was easier mentally because I had already put my body and mind in hard situations so it wasn’t the first time I had to be tested like this. SFAS gates were like a harder and longer RAP week. I agree, having a Ranger Tab and being a SSG made SFAS and the q course different expectations were higher. In some cases like SUT it made things easier, because the foundations of tactics were already known but like my cadre said, “I’m not grading you on how well these patrols go, I want to see how you help and train the younger guys in your squad” To the overall point of going to Ranger School prior to SFAS. It comes down to what are your overall goals and timeline. What’s your 25m target? If being a GB is your priority goals then I would recommend not going to Ranger school prior to SFAS for risk of injury and making a 1 year goal turn into a 5 year goal. If you’re unsure about what you want to do and you have time and are young. Then I’d say give Ranger school a try, learn what you can and after you tested your body and mind and you feel like you are ready for the next step then attend a SOF selection. Either way avoid, doing things that will cause injuries. Being a cadre for the q course I’ve seen to many guys go out of training after getting hurt doing something on their off time.
I remember one of my first days in SFAS in 2001. They asked all the infantry guys to raise our hands. They told us we had a better chance than non-infantry guys of being selected. They then asked us to raise our hands if we had a Ranger tab. They told those of us who raised our hand that we statistically have the best chance of being selected. Again that was in 2001 but the numbers were that those of us who were tabbed had a better chance and it seemed to play out that way as well.

Everything he is addressing in the video is based around the premise that an individual has decided to attend SFAS to become a Green Beret. The decision has been made and that is what they are prepping to accomplish, but then one of their leaders offers them a Ranger or Sapper slot just before SFAS. Well, here is the reality of attending Ranger School that I think wasn't addressed by the MSG, you have to be prepared to be at Ranger School for 2-6 months. Yes, you could very well get rolled back to another class for failing a graded exercise or suffer an injury during one of the phases, and you have to stay because coming back without that tab isn't an option (I've seen guys stay there for months). It is a major risk if your plan is to become an SF Operator and that is why you don't deviate from your plan for attending SFAS just to attend a school that you can go to after taking care of business becoming an SF Operator. If you don't have your tab after making up your mind to attend SFAS, you put it on the backburner and get that Green Beret first.
