Lough Neagh: The freshwater lake being poisoned by toxic algae

- Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in the UK and Ireland, is being poisoned by a toxic blue-green algae, which is being blamed for killing fish, birds and dogs.
This has raised concerns about public health, as the lough provides about 40% of Northern Ireland’s drinking water.
Sky's senior Ireland correspondent David Blevins reports.

Stop pumping sewage into it would be a good start!
Is becsue of drugs
It's not sewage its fertiliser run off from farms...
@@falcodarkzz It's both. And anyway at what point does putting either of those things into the drinking water supply make good sense? Also in France they have had the same problem caused by sewerage.
@@falcodarkzz Fertilizer run off from farms may be part of the problem, what about the septic tank outlets from housing estates beside the lough that i have seen with my own two eyes that are running into streams because house builders couldn't be bothered to make soak aways? The bottom of the stream is complete slime because of the Phosphate and Nitrogen that is in human waste.
@@madeljacky Could well be an issue too. I know this happens in lakes worldwide though, and rivers, due to fertiliser run off, maybe some other things are at work here too
Replace the words climate change and humans with politicians and corporations.
Truly shocking to see this. How has this been allowed to get this bad?
Mostly because of production of drugs. Drugs are poison in nature
'Cause clothes must stay clean, your veggies must resist the insect gang and cows are delicious.
Because DUP refuse to go to work
Says it all.... when Sky only disables comments on their Russel Brand clips ,
Noticed the same thing. Another smear campaign because he speaks the truth. Luckily many see through the BS of mainstream now.
@mikeschulz6598
Sometimes, comments need to be disabled because comments become to caustic and uncontrollable.
Russell Brand has become controversial.
He used to be a hard liberal, but has been trending to more conservative. So he's kind of in the middle.
He's Attacked by both liberals & conservatives.
@@omegaz3393 it's been a trial by media with him so far
Maybe someone could check on randox pharmaceuticals company who purchased the old massereene barracks with slip way access to six mile river 200 yards from the lough itself, maybe they aren’t to blame but prior to randox being on the lough shore we never seen this contamination before… every avenue should be explored before we blame climate change and farmers
Doesn't happen in the Republic, too busy stealing land to look after it
Algal blooms are affected by temperature and abundant nitrites and phosphates.
Unless a pharmaceutical company is dumping fertilizer, they shouldn't have an effect. Of course, testing for nitrates and phospates could include water samples both upstream and downstream from any outlet pipes.
@ZeroIsMany could still be chemicals as this would kill off all the bacteria and raise ammonia levels and deplete oxygen and the result is this
@@ohandanotheronebitesthedus6247 Ammonia doesn't help algal blooms, it harms the growth of other algae, making already impending algal blooms toxic blue-green algae.
I'm not sure if bacteria dying would even cause low oxygen, considering most severe oxygen depleting events in water sources are caused by bacterial decay. As something primarily floating on the surface, algae doesn't really care about the overall oxygen content of the water anyway.
It really is just all about temperature and nutrients.
Raw sewage has been pumped into the Lough for many years, the government are to blame.
It really is sad to see this happen to Lough Neagh, i remember when i was younger and would go stay with my mum at work ( she works right beside Lough Neagh) and when i wasn't playing with her bosses dog i would always look over the Lake's waters, and one day i saw a clump of birds together, Dead, in the water, it still hurts me to this day that these animals are dying because of the Poisoned waters.
😢😢 Sickening
Is this another factor farm runoff issue?
Raw sewage issue, these algae blooms have happened many times over the years in the lough.
OMG.
Bless the Irish they are making a stand what about Scotland Wales and England ?????
This is the drinking water not good
😢it will be with all the chemtrailing 😢
What was the emission like when billions of buffaloes roamed the plains. Should we cull the wildebeest and the caribou or is man to blame . 500 billion of us.
Correct bro all men is too blame,we have destroyed our own home
No, there was no problems, it is MAN's doing and man's sin who are destroying nature.
Guessing this is caused by consented factory farming runoff.
This is the result of stupid human activity. And it will only get worse unless we change our way!
Everywhere. Someday, I hope the earth will return to all the animals and mother nature. Man has lost his priveledge to be here. Very sad indeed.@@zacharypaul4932
Very good congratulations
And the farmers continue to discharge their filth into the water.
Come on ppl get your finger out
Growing pains, it will be fine in a couple of years.
Glad I live in America
Cant french style drains be placed at bottom of hills and sent to treatment it would cost much
Floating Vetiver will sort that out.

Wow./..
Gana have to find a filter of some sort.. or a way to kill off the algae and not put sewage into it.

Global boiling.
Yet another gift the unionists keep giving . Not working, getting paid for not working and not giving a dam about anything else . Westminster should make them get back to work so policies can be legislated to save the lake .
Likely cause is ad blue deposits on roads washed into watercourses,,,farming has been monitored for many years with stable results from testing of water for farm generated effluents.....
We had it at a nature reserve in Lincolnshire nothing died and everything was ok
Time the government got it finger out
So ?
Get back to work DuP
More oxygen
I hope the DUP and their supporters are happy as they sit there sulking because a Catholic First Minister has been elected by the people of N Ireland meanwhile Jeffrey Donaldson just sit there sucking his thumb while this disaster unfolds and our health service, roads and education falls apart around us. it's long past the time that the British government grew a set of ball and stopped paying the DUP the wages they get for doing nothing if we refused to work our employer would soon stop our pay.
This is nationalist propaganda. Ignore it.
Just doing what Sinn Fein did, no different at all 😉
No at all the same as what SF did. They withdrew consent after Arlene refused to stand aside, even temporarily, while their actions were investigated after they were caught with their noses in the trough for the third time. I can't remember any financial scandal ever engulfing SF.
Does the Northern Bank robbery ring any bells?@@seandoherty925
Well done DUP and Brexit. Give Ireland her counties back and she'll actually look after it.
What's this got to do with Brexit?
@@jay70328 • Brexit causes trade & border issues in Northern Ireland.
• Political parties have disagreements over how to handle the trade & border issues.
• One political party no longer has the power that they normally have, so their fears of the trade & border issues not being handled the way they want it to be handled, causes them to say "nope, we're not taking our seats in parliament if we don't get our way".
• Since they won't take their seats in parliament, Northern Ireland government simply doesn't function because it's meant to be "Power sharing".
• No functioning government in Northern Ireland means nothing gets done.
• Shit like this happens and it gets out of hand because nothing was done by the government and civil servants in charge of safeguarding the water supply.
Also; Since NI was dragged out of the EU by Brexit, many companies no longer had to comply with EU regulations on waste disposal, which in turn contributed to the tainting of the water in the Lough.
what has any of that got to do with a toxic lough?@@shona5512
Monitor cyanobacterial and algal blooms in Earth's lakes using cyanolakes on iOS & Android.
Another reason Ireland should not have been divided.
The British never cared about Ireland, no government, no standards.
the majority voted yrs ago and they voted to stay a part of Britain. NI has a long history of invasion and relig. division - inc King Billy of Orange, Netherlands fame
I'm pretty sure the Algae Bloom was green, not red white and blue.

Lough Neagh is the biggest lake in Ireland and bigger than any in the UK.. not a small problem!

1:56 WTF is a open water swimmer 🤣 And she clearly looks like someone who does some serious "floating" on the water. 😁
Someone who swims in open water, obviously. As opposed to closed water, like a swimming pool.
Just a natural occurance.been happening for millions of years
