  • Filmmaker Frank Oly joined the bark EUROPA for a real sailing expedition form Gran Canaria across the ocean to Antarctica. He stayed on board for 3 months and filmed this experience. The bark EUROPA is a 105 year old Tall Ship wandering the oceans. Travelers with and without sailing experience can join and help the professional crew to sail the ship. On board the ship you can find a nice mix of people of all nationalities and ages, all living their dream!

Look at the Picton Castle. I think the sail to the South Pacific will be on pretty soon.

It's two years late on this reply, but I hope you get your wish. There are damned few of such chances in today's world and we're all growing older by the day. So, I hope your wish comes true soon.

Breathtakingly beautiful & somewhat surreal - if you sail it's all about the journey, the rhythm you settle into. Your ship becomes your universe - and suddenly you arrive @ your destination, in this case Antarctica, and are smitten by its beauty.

Soon they will start building ships like this in the 21st century. All those Boeing 747's which are now grounded and destined for the scrap yard. They could all be recycled and made into sailing ships. Imagine how much faster these ships could be if they were made of modern materials.

I just listened to the audiobook Erebus- the story of a ship, that made the first successful Antarctica explorations. The comfort being orders of magnitude higher, I'm adding this travel to my bucket list. :)

I'm gonna be honest with you here. I've never worked or even been on bark Europa. I have however been trained by one how has worked on it and it truly shakes me the fact that there is not even a mention of the work, effort and dedication provided by the crewmembers on this ship. Basically working 16 hours every day if not more to keep the customers entertained, safe, well fed and so on. It may seem like the people we see in this video are working hard or something but they only really have to work as hard as they want to and half the time they don't even know what they are doing just doing what they are being told and usually poorly. The real work is mostly provided by the extreamly talented crew.
