Nikos Galatis sings Ironini kai Mavraki by Sotiris Gavalas
Thank you for posting this wonderful documentary. I just lost my dad a couple of months ago -- he was 90. He was born in a small village in Greece, and then joined his older brother in Piraeus, a city he loved his whole life. He moved to the US in the 60s and met and married my mother, who grew up in village near his. They took my sibling and me to Greece for the first time in 1989, around the time this documentary was made. Part of our trip included a stay in Piraeus, which I have no memory of, except for a few photos of a hotel room. Anyway, he loved Greek music (especially δημοτικά, though I'm not quite sure what that means when compared to other types of Greek folk music), and in the past few years, I've been drawn to finding and listening to all the Greek music we were exposed to as kids, from going to weddings, christenings and other Greek celebrations, to the UHF channel they used to watch on Sundays, which had a few hours of Greek programming, to the albums and 8-track tapes they had in the house. Anyway, I've been enjoying listening to all these old songs I remember from my youth, and have been doing deep-dives into the history and the singers, and this is what brought me here, in 2024. Thanks again for uploading this.
I recall when this was shown on channel 4 in the UK.
It was March 1988 - I still have my VHS recording of this, not gathering dust and well protected.
Only external knowledge I have is that Bellou was approached to participate but, for lack of a better term there were budget constraints.
Recall being 14 in London, I knew most of the musicians in some minor capacity, In total awe of Genitsari, Bakali, Mouflouzeli, these were not just random street musicians who happened to record a few songs but heavyweights of the Greek music scene.
Every authentic rembeti/rembetissa who appeared in this programme, popular or not ended up worshipped by me for 30+ years.
I thank them all, not just for their contribution, not just for their music, but for representing the social aspects of Greek life, serving their country, fighting for recognition not just as musicians but as humans.
Not a day has gone by where something represented by this show is not an aspect of my life, listening to music, the musicians, encountering lifes day to day problems.
The spirit is still alive, because rembetiko is a whole philosophy.

❤THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS AMAZING STORY.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
"I lose my cool and I ask my motorbike if you love me at all." The lyrics that made me suddenly cry.
The greatest show ever.
Both historic and iconic - the old boy dancing at the end with the hat is sheer class.
Thank you. Today, I saw this the first time. 2020.
Great documentary and amazing music, thanks for posting!
I really enjoyed this. The music really spoke to me and the words are so poignantly poetic and simple but have a deep meaning. I have Persian roots and recognise this music naturally somehow -
thnxxx for uploading the documentary
I enjoyed it , good to know some of this history of this music
Thanks for uploading this documentary! It is great (and I loved the fragments of Athens in the 80's, first time I visited Greece)

Beautiful music.

Her voice is amazing I've gone blank on her name
thanks so much for the video!
This whole series was fantastic. Question for the crowd---I've been able to track down info and tracks for almost all of the lesser known artists in this documentary, but I cannot find ANYTHING on Nikos Galatis. He is sitting in a doorway playing an acoustic guitar. He comes in at the 3:02 in the background behind the narrator, and then fully on at the mark and then fully on the 3:23 mark. I would love to hear more rembetika from him if available. Any leads are appreciated
Ioakim Boutakidis Thanks for the feedback. About Nikos Galatis, I'll ask around. I have the impression that he may have passed away quite young. If you search, there's a clip from 1991 of him singing "Rapunzel" - which was in consideration for Greece's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest.
Thank you. I found that video as well----which was a bit jarring as it was so far from what I expected---and an early and unfortunate death would explain how little there is about him. Too bad. But if you do find anything else, please post. Would appreciate it very much. Take care.
I think thats Elenh Vitalh when she was young. The voice sounds like hers
please, what is the last song, Nikos Vrachas is playing?
Remember that this video was made in the 1980s. It was a very different world back then....and tastes do change....
I believe that the speaker was working in the music industry at the time, so probably had a reasonable idea of what was going on....
Take care
nice,,this is new to me....but i like it
@Antometrios mystery no more....she is EYA KANELLI a very good singer with a small but very good discography in the 90s and 00s and released a new album in 2011!acording to my opinion not recognized for such a voice because
of the record companies....
3:07 does anyone know the name of the song??
Thank you
ATTENTION!Nick Vrachnas rules ,the truly pireotic rembetiko style at the end from 6:00 to the end
Can someone please tell me the name of the man who narrates the whole documentary into English (I think he is also a singer)
george dalaras
