Something odd that I noticed.... At 2:16 the bot says that it sees a drying rack with cups and a plate. ( That is not correct at all... The drying rack has plates and a cup.) I can't think of any reason it would phrase it's response like that.
Also there are three points that the bot does some unusual things.... At 2:57 the bot tilts the bin to receive the garbage being thrown into it. At 3:03 the bot pushes the basket and slides it toward the person after putting it down. At 3:41 the bot pushes the dish rack forward, for no apparent reason.
These all seem like human behavior, and I'm sure that this was unintentional in the task requested. However it shows us that caution must be taken when programming these robots, as they readily pick up both good and bad programming.

Nice demo from Figure but the most impressive part, the AI (CHAT GPT) is taking up space in a multi acre building, using a massive amount of power and communicating across a large distance, hence the lag.
The robots motion control AI is probably taking up a large room somewhere in the building.
So these humanoid robots won't be that useful until all that computational power can be contained, within their structure.

Whilst the motion of the bot is impressive, this presentation isn't, like others, conclusive and is open to question. Until a presentation is done live and with random players (non-company participants), with randomly chosen activity in a given environment (it would have to be an environment that includes objects and potential tasks that the bot has learnt), no definitive conclusion can be drawn. This whole presentation is open to questioning as everything shown could have just been a preprogramed sequence. A live presentation, with random participants and independent observers, is the only forum that can provide anything conclusive. Once that is done, all our minds will be blown.

I wonder if we'll see some sort of social division between the gen models further down the line. Like a gen5 considering a gen1 inferior and therefore redundant or obsolete. This in turn making the earlier gens consider deploying tactics for their continued existence against the newer models. A class war. We're training these on human knowledge and experience (youtube, twitter etc), which is historically all about waging war against ourselves in order to compete for dominance. Who's to say AI won't adopt the same principles when deciding a particular course of action.

After getting into Computer Vision, Expert Systems, and AI back in the middle 80s, back then we were trying to perfect optimal forward and back-propagation algorithms, I determined that after a brief period of intensely psychotic cogitation, the equivalent to a baby playing with its toes to figure out the limits of its articulation, _programming would no longer be required._
We would have to *_teach_* the systems. Feed them the data and let them figure out if they could perform the required tasks.

  • @EnerGeezerSquirrel

At 2:56, the bot includes an "uhh" into its speech.
Do LLMs "hesitate" in actuality or is that programmed in to make it more human-like? Sounds suspiciously all-too-human to be at this stage so quickly, but also, do the natural sounding intonations reveal a really small pool of samples as far as vocalisations go? The demo's neat, but we need more data to fully understand what we're seeing, IMHO.

It makes no sense to assume that any robot for some time will have a top notch AI in it. Good enough to run as a "smart meatpuppet" - enough to go through a list of tasks, do some planning. Anything more complex can be outsourced to a less resource constrained system. it will take a long time before a robot has the budget for a high-end AI. Not only money, but also power - remember, the Optimus is using what, 500W? A good computer with AI chips needs a LOT more.
But there is no need to have this AI in the robot - we have wireless networks on various levels today. It does not have to be cloud. Imagine a 100.000 USD "AI station" that you can buy. Oh, you say - that is not worth it. Sure - for ONE robot, but i.e. a company having 20 robots may just rent one to have the cloud in the basement.
Over time what can be properly done in a robot without paying too much cost (i.e. loosing battery, requiring cooling) will go up - and we may well in a couple of years be good enough to run a GPT-4 level AI. But then this will be the low level AI - because anything in an AI server will be larger and more powerful.
I would expect powerfull AI in a robot around the time we get photonic (light based) chips - max a decade - or another breakthrough that eliminates 90%+ of the energy loss.

Planes don’t flap wings to fly, cars don’t drive on legs and subs and ships don’t swish their tails to move. Robots on factory floors are basically n-dimensional moveable arms with precision and repetitive motions. Why the desire to have a human looking robot ?
Oh that’s right, they don’t need to have a shelter, eat, drink have kids or a family. Also no pesky health or retirement insurance to fund. It’s another race to reduce costs, period. The fear is that you’ll be the last business to do so before all those consumers no longer have jobs and income to buy your stuff.
We did a terrible job at outsourcing and immigration, this is just the final nail in the coffin.
I’m not impressed just with the technology, I’m seriously concerned about the outcomes.
Just who the hell Lars is going to have the job and the income to buy that Tesla cause C3PO doesn’t need a set of wheels.

Lars, there is a problem. The AI stutters twice. 1st at the time stamp 2:56 it says "it was the only "UH" etable item I could provide". The second stutter is at time stamp 3:53 it says " I ,- I think I did pretty well " computers do not stutter, people off camera reading from a script or improvising do. Pull back the curtain on this one Toto, and do it quick.

    • @CrypticCarbon
      @CrypticCarbon 2 месяца назад +1

Your understanding of this is really incomplete. The stutter and human like mannerisms are actually expected. The voice tech in this is similar to the method used by google like 5 years ago. It works by learning the predicted outcome of expected human speech. It is not a text to syllable program like the general "not AI" text to speech tools of old. Its trained with feedback to accurately mimic expected actual real world human speech, not ideal textbook speech. Thus, it picks up human mannerisms because that is what it was rewarded to do. That is how you tell this is a neural net and not a simple text to speech program.

@viophile If it gets to that point then we'll have UGI. Universal Generous Income. Even the makers of this tech like Elon Musk and Sam Altman support UBI and fund UBI studies. It would not make sense to effectively destroy the economy by ending labour and having no one to sell goods and services to.
