@@digitalis2977 yeah its a no brainer, it takes a lot of time, energy, and effort to produce, transport, and place steel rebar to build a new overpass or whatever it may be building, something that is as strong at 1/4 the weight, thats fewer trips to deliver what is needed, less fuel spent on the transportation of the support, and the same result of a bridge being built. it being made from recycled materials is just icing on the cake.
This is the future I want to live in, too bad we're all going to be crammed into 15 minute prisons and forced to eat bugs.

It always gives me hope that the government can have hearings to help the people instead of grandstanding political speeches. This was amazing to watch on multiple levels.
I normally expect when I click on these videos to hear people chewing each other out. It was really pleasant to get to hear someone just let two people talk.
I also always enjoy hearing people talk about things that excite them, even if it's boring to outside people.
Yep. As an engineer, I remember we had a presentation on new forms of rebar utilizing carbon fiber. You would never suspect the strength of it. They handed out little samples (about half inch diameter). Under no circumstance could you even remotely bend it! The amount of cost saving and extra safety benefit is enormous to put it mildly.
So what or why hasn't it been used so widely?
What in your opinion is stopping the change?
Yes I was amazed at the carbon fiber applications in space engineering yet for all the advantages in cost savings, weight savings, and durability nothing much was done due to the hooks the corporations had on politicians and their refusal to allow competition.

I don't know that it's the engineers......if it is it's the ones in bed with the government agencies putting down the highways who are drinking buddies with the cement/concrete/bridge builders.....
This is important, but the open southern border and inflation are far more of a concern to me. Especially with America's lack of energy independence !

Bridges flex, steal flexs but resin reinforced glass fiber doesn't do so well and the resins are the biggest issues with this idea.

Does he mention the cost of those synthetic products is triple or more than the equivalent timber and steel products, USER PAYS FOLKS, that's the TAXPAYERS
The REASON steel reinforcement rusts is BECAUSE of poor building practices by not encasing the steel with 20mm minimum of concrete.
It is well understood that in saltwater environments galvanised steel must be used and is taught at trade school level to apprentices. Architects engineers, building inspectors and builders ALL know the building requirements, it is purely bad building practices and those in charge not doing THEIR JOBS that cause structural failures.

I believe the person that demonstrated or spoke about the plastics for decking and bridges is mistaken about it being cheaper to manufacture relative to production of steel. Plus, the strengths are not equivalent. The processes in the manufacture of steel has been optimized, just as we have optimized the production of petroleum, coal, and gas.
I believe he is talking about in places where steel will rust
I believe he's referring to the long term cost, not just the initial production of material cost. when rebar rusts in concrete the rust expands out from the base metal and exerts pressure on the concrete causing it to crack and break. Add in salty environments like the Pacific coast, Atlantic coast, Gulf coast, and all the northern states who deal with wintery conditions by salting the roadways. So the cost of maintenance over a 50 yr period of fixing cracks, replacing sections of bridges to remove the rusted material that is too far gone, Highly specialized and costly protective coating systems all adds up to be vast amounts of cost.
And as far as having these things optimized already... We as humans always believe we have things optimized until newer technology comes along and changes that. That's backwards thinking that we have things already optimized so lets not try to do any better. For instance, if you went out and bought the most optimized computer today doesn't mean that 5 years from now the same exact set up would be optimized then.
@@jimjam4082 I come from a world of continuous improvement ( plan, do, check, act ) and didn't mean to imply the "steel" and/or "petroleum" engineering/processes are optimized to be as good as they can get. I recognize much of what we do has an asymptotic nature toward ideal. I just see a little irony the female witness is talking microfibers and it's negative impact, while the male witness is testifying the role of plastics is a good thing to replace steel. Unfortunately, I cannot see the name of the male witness to learn more. I do challenge the use of recycle plastics as guard rails (longevity and impact strength). Your computer analogy is not comparable, btw - that industry is driven by Moore's Law which is about density and not optimization.

Americans could Build bridges. Who is responsible for taking our Citizens out of our infrastructure? No foreign influences Should be touching our roads, bridges, Treatment facilities, utilities, processing Plants. etc. this seems like a slow takeover. How many Americans are building bridges in India as an India citizen?
I am sure some if not all the items the professor showed were made from petroleum and nowhere near green energy!
Who cares about Green Energy?
Even your Green Energy is made from petroleum: you can't make Green Energy with Green Energy now, and that Economy of Scale won't be possible in the foreseeable future, either.
You'll never eliminate Petrochemicals and Petroleum, so the name of the game is Reduction; it doesn't matter WHAT his materials are made from if they do the job and take one quarter of the resources to produce.
