Not a player call, but I absolutely loved his call for back to back homers. "Back to back... and belly to belly!" Hilarious, but his delivery made it so much better.

A show for the fans, by the fans
I was born in the mid 80s. For Yankees fans of my generation, I think Sterling announcing he's calling it a career evokes similar feelings to what my parents felt when Johnny Carson announced the same. That voice has been there as long as I can remember. I always knew this day would come, though it feels unbelievable that the day is here. Best wishes in retirement, John. I'm going to miss hearing you call the game.

Same. I think if it was Rickie Ricardo broadcasting it would be listenable but Justin Shackil’s voice is too sterile and high pitched that it’s quite jarring. He also doesn’t paint the picture of what’s going on like John and doesn’t naturally bring up how many outs, baserunners, or score as well as John did. I’m not knocking him btw. Shackil just needs a crack at TV. They need another actual play by play guy since we’re going to see less Roucco with his national responsibilities and I’m sorry but Flash is no Ken Singleton, Bobby Mercer, or Jim Kaat when it comes to PBP.

I'm 63......I remember the summer of '73....and his sports talk show on WMCA where he would talk down to the dolts with their incessant requests to know when Ron Blomberg or Elliot Maddox would be back from injury or the progress in the construction of the new Yankee Stadium to the excitement of the trade that brought Micky Rivers and Ed Figueroa to the Yankees to his amazing play by play of the New York Islanders, " Hart...to Potvin, Denny back to Hart....Hart has a shot....GOAL!!, ISLANDER GOAL!!, ISLANDER GOAL!!, ISLANDER GOAL!"
His play by play of the ABA Nets when Dr. J. led them to a championship to his eventual call of 5 championships for Yankees. That's pretty darned good. Finally, Sterling finally tells himself as his used to tell his callers when he had enough...."give it a rest!" Well deserved John. You were not only the soundtrack of the Yankees. You were the sports soundtrack of my youth!

Ahh man that was a great one
I grew up on Staten Island, and for a few years as a kid, we had an above ground pool in the back yard. EVERY so often, dad would join me and my sister in the pool in the middle of a boiling summer afternoon. One day, he put a bookbox plugged into the ball wall of their bedroom (in the back of the house) and opened the back window, put the bookbox up against the screen and put the volume on Max so he and I could enjoy the pool while listening to the Yankee game.
I can't remember who we faced, but I remember we were ahead and in trouble and Tanyon Sturtze was brought in. My father was absolutely certain it was over, but Sturtze got out of the jam (maybe with a strike out) as Sterling called out "THE GRAND TANYON!". It was a great afternoon for no particular reason (I have a great dad, it wasn't rare to have great times with him, I had a happy childhood, it wasn't rare to be happy), and "THE GRAND TANYON!" will always be the first thing I think of when I think of John Sterling.
The only guy who can replace John Sterling is Ricky Ricardo. He currently does the Yankees spanish broadcast. He has filled in and he’s excellent. Great baritone. Shackil sounds like you accidentally clicked the wrong game on AtBat and got some anonymous broadcaster from the Midwest.
My favorite Sterling moment will always be Arod’s game tying homer against the twins in game 2 of 2009

Whenever a new player signed with the Yankees my fellow fans and I would predict what kind of home run call would be given to that player. For instance, I predicted Sterling would say "Granderslam" when he would hit a grand slam. :) Will miss you John!!!

You have to put Mo from the 09 team on this one just because of the uncertainty of the bullpen. If not him then def CC 2 ACES is a game changer I wish Rodon would perform in that manner. However I have mixed feelings with adding arod great defense at and a heavy bat butI feel like it will be too many power hitters and less speed.

I live in Nashville and I've paid for MLB premium since 2010. Until 2023, when Audacy took over radio on the app, I could hear John and Suzyn do pregame. Really sad that was taken away and will never be back. 😭
And he may be a good guy, but I don't care for Shackle. Too bland. Let Suzyn do it all.
