I've been exploring this gambit which I love since most people are inclined to take the pawn. I highly recommend looking at some of the lines after 5. Qe2 as an attempted defense, because black ends up losing more pawns and starts sacrificing stuff for a very winning attack
Igor Smirnov at remote chess academy got me going on this, but I haven’t exactly gotten lots of wins on it bc I’m new so to answer your other question: 30 minute format with lichess statistics are great to take it further

I've been using the Rousseau and Lucchini a lot recently in bullet and blitz. I find it quite high percentile and a lot of fun. Winawer from the Three Knights is another frequent transposition that follows very familiar lines.
love the content as always Jonathan! I just came across a crazy gambit in the Alekhine's defense i think you'll enjoy. After 1. e4 nf6 2. e5 nd5 3. d4 black has this crazy move b5!!

This gambit was my favourite weapon back in the time, and I was going to start playing it again after you gave me a good line against the Ruy Lopez (which is the reason why I stopped playing 1...e5). Now, people will know about it and I will feel less special. I love you and hate you at the same time.
Fascinating. At 20:24 and following what we arguably get is a reversed version of the Vienna line with d3 for white, but here the pawn on d5, attacking the WHite Bishop, actually (arguably) is better for Black than the analogous line in the true Vienna because there wouldn't be the same kind of attack on an opposing Bishop that there is here. The original Vienna with d3 is a questionable line (better by common consent is to play Qf3 instead of d3) but here the position has a flavour slightly of its own. Interesting stuff, Jonathan.

Thanks for the great video! One early line you didn't mention, (it's the reason I looked up this gambit) was after Black plays the Rousseau Gambit with 3..f5 if white tries to decline the gambit and defend the pawn with the knight by playing 4. Nc3, Black can just take on e4. White cannot take back because 5..d5 now forks the knight and light square bishop.
So either White gets ran over and is down a full piece, or White has to waste more tempi with Ng1, and Black is even up a pawn now and completely winning.
This has kind of ruined the Italian Game for me and I might look at new openings for White lol.
Just counter with d4, no need to get out of the italian game

I've been playing this against e4 for a while now. If they play the Italian, you go Rousseau gambit with potential for a Lucchini gambit transposition. If they play the Spanish, you enter the Jaenisch gambit/Schlieman defense. I know at higher levels of play it can lead to difficult positions, but man it can lead to some spicy positions 👌

I`ve been playing this for years lol . Love it in blitz ! Great gambit thanks. A French girl called this opening garbage and playing as white she did equalize . Yes was strong player and equalizes but too aggressive with her king and feel into a cute mate almost in the middle of the board, oh wow the irony :D. I would never trash talk any openings especially gambits. lol Chess love it
Hi Jonathan, have you ever thought about making a video on the 2. a3 Sicilian for white? There are lots and lots of interesting traps, stunning tactics, and crazy engine lines that arise from the most popular response by black. (1. e4 c5 2. a3 Nc6 3. b4 cxb4 4. axb4 Nxb4 5. c3 Nc6 6. d4 d5 7. exd5 Qxd5 8. Na3). In other quieter lines, there are amazing engine approved attacking ideas, my favorite being from this position (1. e4 c5 2. a3 Nc6 3. b4 cxb4 4. axb4 Nxb4 5. c3 Nc6 6. d4 e6 7. Bd3 d6 8. Nf3 Nf6 9. O-O Be7 10. Re1 O-O). White can strike with e5 and if black trades before moving the knight, white can lunge the h pawn to h4, continuing the attack. This pawn is poisonous, and if black gets greedy and takes with the bishop, they'll find themselves under unbelievable pressure when white lifts the rook on a1 to a4, attacking the queen and looking to bring another piece to the party. I've actually been able to get this position numerous times, and it is a lot of fun to play as white.
Adding onto this, my favorite trap in the main line is 1. e4 c5 2. a3 Nc6 3. b4 cxb4 4. axb4 Nxb4 5. c3 Nc6 6. d4 d5 7. exd5 Qxd5 8. Na3 e6 9. Nb5 Bd6 10. Qg4 g6 11. Bc4
You might recognize this tactic from the beautiful preparation of Caruana against I believe MVL in a poisoned pawn Sicilian.

Since I don't play the italian opening but the Ponziani I sometimes get e4,e5,Nf3,Nc6,c3 and then f5. I then usually respond also with d4 to avoid trouble.
You should do a speedrun using only similar gambits starting with e4, e5. That would be really good content and we would memorized it much better.
That Lucchini Gambit line is almost the exact replica of a line from the Bishop's Opening in reverse, where Black thinks oh goody, a free rook, and then you hit him with f5, forcing the Knight to f2 and then hit him with Qh5!
Very interesting gambit
6:44 after knight to f6 the victory for white doesn't look so rosy anymore. I see 4 pieces for black 3 for white and something needs to be done against knight c2 before even thinking of rescuing the lady. Then d5 happens anyway.

The Rousseau Gambit 3 Bc4 f5 is dubious because of 4 d4. (4 d3 is almost as good.) Skip to 18:54 for discussion of that.

Hi Jonathan! I really like playing Nf6 on move one versus d4, in hopes that they enter the London so I can play c6 and Qb6, asking the question of their b pawn. But often they go straight for c4 instead and I have to play some Nimzo or whatever. Is there a gambit I can play against 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4...[?]
Likewise, when I go for the Blackmar Diemer / Von Popiel type position with 1. d4 d5 2. e4, they often just play 2. ...e6 and I feel compelled to transpose into the advance French. Is there something worse and more fun I can do than that?

Can you do an attack on Max Lange attack? I find that people refuse to accept Nakhamsons gambit and instead play Max Lange attack aka Bishop C5

Exactly, and white's extra tempo having the bishop out can often be erased after d5 kicking it back.
Seems kind of like the Vienna gambit but opposite colors and down a tempo

Hi Jonathan, I made a new opening. A week ago when I was asleep I had a chess dream where I played a game in a tournament and my opponent played the trailer against me. I kid you not, in my dream I randomly played the novelty Na3 for white against the traxler. I call this new opening the Traxler:dream varation! Plz look into it :) thanks :)

Reverse Vienna Gambit.
Playing the Rousseau gambit is simply a way to take advantage of the opponents ignorance of the opening. At least the video shows the best moves for white.

I like you're ideas but never play e5. Sicillian and perhaps a french sicillian.
