Sam, I used to be a heavy truck mechanic in a Peterbilt & Western Star dealership, after 3 back surgeries my surgeon told me I need to find a different career, at 40 years old & just got married it was a daunted task. I was heavy into vintage trucks, I had a KB-8 International & WC2264 White, when I stopped wrenching , my vintage trucks, tools, equipment all went ..it was a tough decision.

Love that your finally back on the mini Mack, been too long since it made any content. Kept waiting for that old copper line to crack while you were trying to bend it. They quit using copper in automotive applications since they can work harden from vibration. I would have pulled the line right off and annealed it. For copper you heat to a red heat then quench in water, you can do that multiple times since as your working it it will harden again.

Sam, when I worked on commercial trucks we would put a bolt in each front spring hanger then lower the frame down to install the rear bolts. That way you weren't fighting it. I know your springs were not still attached to the rear end. We did frame extensions and shorts so the springs always stayed on the rearend. Frame bolts were always used. However I don't recall any of the guys torque wrenching frame or hanger bolts. They would just impact torque everything.AL B.

Great project! I sure you know this, but just in case, copper work hardens very quickly. The more you bend it, the harder it gets to bend. Just heat it with a torch to just below red hot, and let it cool, and it will be much softer again. Copper also has one of the highest heat conductivity rates of any metal, almost as high as gold. It takes a lot of heat to solder it or anneal it. Keep going, I love the old Macks!

In reality, those driveline park brakes are pretty effective due to the reduction ratio of the pinion. The down side being a heavy load on a hill is only held by a couple of pinion teeth.

If you have a welder, a torch and a BFH, you can fab most anything. You may want to throw a roll of duct tape in the toolbox as well. Thinking outside the box is like common sense, if you don't have any, you are likely to struggle at everything. Great job Sammy

The little Tonka type loader is a cute touch on right front side. Maybe you working on yours may get Matt started back on his 6 wheel Autocad lol. Like it when the wife helps with builds , nice family involvement. Can't wait till I heal from back surgery and my tractor is back from dealership warranty work. I have a week to get driveway ready then surgery. Then 4 to 8 weeks recovery.
Hope your going to put maxi cans in?
I myself would like to find a mack 6 wheeler short wheel base. With either a mack 6 or quad transmission. B, U model or the day cab coe. Personally I would have found a mack 237 engine so it would be all mack.

Sam, you may want to get DOT lines anyhow. Copper has a nasty habit of work hardening. Bending on it that much it may develop a crack, and fail under pressure. I learned that the hard way repairing an old compressor. Quite noisy when it let the air out. :P

The problem I've found with nylock nuts is the nylon can hold moisture in against the threads since it creates a seal at the nylon. Nylocks seem to have a tendency to seize up more. The deformed nuts not so much.

That way you will have good access to the top of those shift towers, if you ever need to service that stuff. Be a pain to have to remove the entire floor to get at that stuff. JMO

I have wanted to do an A40 for years and just never found a truck and components that I could afford. I wanted to put a mechanical 8.3 Cummins in it. I have a 2nd gen ram 3500 with the same engine that you are using, but I wanted a little more power. Since you are keeping the original rearend, the 5.9 will probably work fine. That final is probably around 5.18 or lower and I wanted a little better road speed. Will still make arealy nice truck!
