dreamcatcher \:D/ you got the inception reference! 👏 they use a lot of pop-culture reference to help convey the theme/plot. honestly if you want to spend hours combing through the mv, you will find new things each time. some you will only find in a single frame. but yeah, the spinning top is signaling they are not in the real world. I hope you didn't miss the old woman who turned into a spider as she was having her photo taken 😅. the photographer girl is the same one who burned the spider so she got cursed and I interpret the other girls are trying to save her, by turning to witchcraft/darkside themselves but end up being trapped in alternate nightmare universes themselves. also when viewing the mv for the plot, separate the choreo scenes because those are just in there to show the choreo and aren't really part of the plot. and handong, the chinese member, is having a bday today actually lol.
An old Korean tradition was for children during winter to go out on frozen lakes to spin their tops. I think the scene in the video indicates thin ice which is why Jiu stopped so suddenly when she saw the top. That's what popped into my head when I saw it. People react differently depending on the idle thoughts bumping around in their noggins. That's part of the fun of Dreamcatcher. They hand you a story full of blanks and let you fill it in. I think it's important to remember that the Nightmare MV's were made for Koreans and not Westerners. They're a mixture of Korean and European mythology just like Kpop is a mixture of American and European music genres mixed together to suit Korean tastes. They didn't really start thinking about the international market until around the time of the release of Deja Vu which is 100% a European story.
Thanks for reacting to Dreamcatcher. These girls deserve all the attention they can get. I think it's nice of you to get caught up in the storyline, but I'm also curious about your thoughts on the song. As for the storyline, you caught most of it. The girls are running a little photostudio, as photos seem to be an important part of being able to cast spells on someone. They are witches after all, and are not necessarily good. The spider lady comes in, acting like she wants her photo taken, but instead turns into a giant spider and puts a spell on Yoohyeon (the one who was taking her photo and also the one who burned the spider. So she took her revenge on her). Then she goes after Jiu when we see the claw of smoke in the mirror (Jiu is the one who put the spider in the jar). In the aftermath, all the girls seem to be ok except for Yoohyeon. She's spiraling into darkness. They are trying to get her out using their spells but failed (the portal closes). They did, however, seem to have succeeded in making her conscious again (she opens her eyes in the end), but she's still stuck on the wrong side of the portal, aka in the nightmare realm.
In "You and I" you can see the spider queen coming for Yoohyeon. She is the old woman that is being photographed - only to rob Yoohyeon's spirit. Also, earlier we see Dongie being pinned to the wall by needles, what is usually done to insects. For me, Yoohyeon's spirit is being pulled out here and thrown into the white dimension, which we will see again in Piri. The spider queen takes over her body, which is why we see JiU try to free Yoohyeon (without success) and grab her neck in the end. I highly recommend to check out the dance practice as well, because Dami does something very special that didn't make it into the MV.
Good job picking up on the duality part. That's a big theme in DCs music and lore. Mirrors are often used to show the duality of self, the light and the dark, that inhabit a person. The Nightmare versions of the girls are their darker selves made manifest. Which is why there are times where it seems like they might be the antagonist of the story, because they kind of are, from a certain point of view. Again, a lot of this is up to personal interpretation so take it with a grain of salt. The events in this MV are the fallout from Yoohyeon's actions in Fly High. Since she was the one who killed the spider, the spider queen targets her. When she's taking her photograph, you can see her shadow turn into a giant spider and then possess Yoohyeon. The rest of the girls get together to try and free her and are only partially successful. They manage to save her but end up trapped with her in the nightmare realm, which is represented as the white world. Here you can see Yoohyeon racing to escape via the portal, but it closes before she can get there. Something that I overlooked dozens of times in this MV is that final frame with Yoohyeon kneeling before the stone circle where the portal was. That stone circle looks an awful lot like a giant magnifying glass focusing moonlight, an inverse of what she did to the spider in Fly High. The next two songs, What and Piri, are my favorite in the Nightmare Series and Piri was my first introduction to Dreamcatcher, though I didn't know it at the time.
Can't believe I'm doing this again, but since you're having trouble with the basic plot, here goes. (Assumes Professorial pose) The dreamcatcher itself was created by the Canadian/American Ojibwe Nation based on the story of Spider Woman. She was a supernatural being who cared for the people, especially the infants and children. She spun her web to hang next to their beds to catch bad dreams and allow only good thoughts to enter sleeping heads. Spider Woman is also associated with the sun as a bringer of light. In Dreamcatcher's story Spider Woman is a spirit guardian of all spider kind. Korean, Japanese, and Chinese folklore is full of nature spirits which are associated with specific animals, trees, or places. If you mess with any of them you pay the price. The girls angered Spider Woman by burning a small helpless spider (Yoohyeon did which is perfect casting because Yoohyeon is a troublemaker). They were all affected by the curse because they had formed a coven centered around a book of black magic which Dami found in the school library. The curse removed their souls and doomed their spirits to walk the earth forever, bringing nightmares into the dreams of sleeping humans. Kind of like the wandering spirits in A Christmas Carol except they have a job to do. As the female lead in the Kdrama Hotel del Luna said after being cursed in a similar way, "I'm not alive and I'm not dead, I'm just here". Originally each member was supposed to represent a specific type of nightmare. As we saw in Chase Me, Gahyeon was falling, Sua was held fast, Siyeon and Yoohyeon were being chased and so on. That specific plot point was abandoned pretty quickly so with You and I the core story is of them trying to free Yoohyeon from the curse and get her soul back. The curse is focused on her since she killed the spider and the darkness (the black goop oozing from the mirror onto her fingers in Fly High symbolizes her dark side taking control) is strongest in her. At the end of You and I it can be seen that they failed and Yoohyeon is still firmly under the control of Spider Woman. The next song is What and it's much more difficult to interpret because it runs on nightmare logic, so whatever it makes you feel is the meaning. Mirrors: In a Dreamcatcher MV mirrors always represent the dual nature of all humanity, light and darkness always fighting for control.
I appreciate you going through it again! I unf missed the first one due to a mix of the massive number of comments, and a hectic work schedule. Awesome intel. Thanks for taking the time to comment (again) and watching!

For frame by frame, use the keyboard comma and period keys. You can also use the arrow keys to jump around as well.

I love how you break the vids down with ur interpretation
If you want a You and I performance video, watch Dreamcatcher’s performance at the 2018 Dream Concert. It will be very enjoyable for you.
Alright sounds good! We will add it to the list. Thanks!
