  • it’s been a long time since i last did the british army assessment for strength and cardio from the ‘100% army fit app’. it’s such a good indicator to see where your overall fitness is at. pretty chuffed with my scores and looking forward to getting more reps and bringing my run time down even more in the future. if you’ve done this test, let me know how you get on in the comments!

For your press ups I have used lots of static holds at arms fully out and at the bottom in hold position. Never work to failure on these. You can also throw in negative reps and work on your times for these in single rep per set format. The format should be "grease the groove" and if you have the time and suitable place, do these in a set every 15 mins whilst at home. Do not let the ego force you into getting anywhere near failure on your sets. Try 50 or 60% of max effort. If you can do 18 now I would suggest doing sets of no more than 9 reps 3 times per week x4 sets on these days. Once you hit 30 on your test day (once per week) your can try using weighted vests and buying some gymnastic rings and do these same exercises with this equipment. However, the body takes along time for actual strength to settle in and its best to continue staying at 50 or 60 percent for a period of six weeks. Test your new max effort and on the 6th week move up to 60% of your new max effort. I was taught this years ago by a PTI at Guards depot who was a gymnast, there is a guy called Christopher Somers who teaches this way for all his gymnasts and they smash out the reps. He was the USA Olympic coach. This is by far the quickest/best way to do any press or pushing movement with your bodyweight. There is also some some killer running techniques 'head over foot' and 'same side stride' taught by a guy called David Weck.. If I was going back on military courses I would be using these types of techniques for at least a couple years whilst joining and at regiment to get a really good all round base. You can also throw in some farmers carrying on dumbells, some deadlifting and some kettlebell swings. Have patience, and dont exhaust the nervous system on the strength work. I wish someone had told me this sort of stuff before I joined, we didnt even have internet then. Above all good luck and enjoy your service as time flies by far too fast. p.s I know its a strange thing not working out to max but there is good reason not (injury and overtraining leading to slower results) there is a book by Christopher Somers called Building the gymnastic body. All you need is in there and better explained. Godspeed.

Somebody once told me that the best way to improve on push ups is literally to do more push ups. Not sure how I came across your channel but after years of failed applications I’m finally going to selection next week. Hope the push up advice helps, it helped me.

Practice doing your press ups (we call them pushups) with your feet elevated on a chair, stool, etc. You get more bang for your buck developing muscle strength with the extra resistance and it makes the regulation ones easier when you are being graded- also keep your head up (looking forward) and concentrate on keeping your back straight. Head up looking forward helps keep the back straight. Use something more substantial (heavier, that can't move- like your sofa) to put your feet under for situps. You can really lay into them if your counter weight can't move. Also try to move your butt further away from your heels a little. The only way to get better running is run more- learn to pace yourself and pick a point towards the end (like the last 300 meters) to just go all out. If you want to puke at the end, you are doing it right. Stay strong!

I know this may be a bit late but if you want to build upper body strength go and speak to your local boxing gym or rugby team, I'm 53 and been out of it for many years, their coaches can organise a program for you that will maximise your whole body, what you are doing is great for fitness, but I'm thinking you want more strength, it will mean a lot of work and no salads, big protein and carbs, steak, oily fish and pasta, the body needs fuel to perform at its best, it's also good to have your mind and goals in the right place that was why I said speak to a coach, they will start you off and build you up gradually.
Take care and stay safe ❤
