The Backyard of Death: Bringing a whole new meaning to Garden Catastrophe!

  • So some of you will probably remember this property because I've already done 3 episodes here. Back then I decided not to clean up the backyard and some of the front as it was just too crazy. Well, I've had a change of heart, and I'm back to finish off the whole lot. And when I say this yard is crazy, i mean CRAZY! It's full of blackberries, rubbish, old trees and what's left of the garden beds. To get this property back up to scratch, I would say it going to be quite a few episodes. I'm going to do the best I can here, as the homeowner really needs the help. I'm also going to go back over the work I've done, as I could have done better! I hope you enjoy the episode and stay tuned for the biggest transformation I've ever done - What a challenge! All up, I spent around 11.5 hours on this job, including 3 trips to the landfill. This is episode 4 of 11.

    FAQ's:
    Q: Where are you located?
A: I am from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia 🦘.
Q: Do you worry about snakes?
A: I have never even seen a snake in over 5 years on the job.
Q: Which equipment do you use?
A: Mostly STIHL power equipment (battery and petrol) and commercial Honda self-propelled mowers.
Q: How much do the jobs cost?
A: Sorry, I prefer not to talk about costs.
Q: Why don't you use tarps instead of bins?
A: Tarps are too difficult to move through small spaces and lift into the trailer. The same for wheelbarrows, they are only good for unloading the trailer!
Q: Why are the hot water cylinders outside?
A: I would say it's because Australia had a temperate to tropical climate, and therefore it doesn't matter that much if they are outdoors. To me, though, it seems a bit inefficient to have them outside in Tasmania with a temperate climate (coldish for 3 - 4 months per year). But that is industry standard down here 🤷‍♂️
Q: Why don't you have help?
A: I've had many problems with employees in the past, so now I work alone.
    Q: Why don't you have a ride-on mower?
A: Well, there are a few reasons.
    1. I don't have the right trailer for a ride on, considering I always take away the green waste.
    2. I don't have anywhere to store it, as my shed is too small.
    3. A lot of the properties we do have fences and gates, so you can't actually get a ride-on on to the properties.
    4. I don't do enough big jobs to justify spending 15k AUD on a stander, but it would be nice to have one!
    5. I will get one as soon as my transport and storage problems are solved.
Q: What types of ladders do you use?
A: The large one is a Gorilla Adjustable Platform 150kg and the small one is a Gorilla Mighty 19. They are both adjustable.
    Q: Who/what is Jim's Mowing?
A: Jim's Mowing is a franchise business. The Jim's Group is the biggest home services franchise in Australia.
Q: Why do you have 2 channels that seem to be the same?
A: Quick Cuts (my original channel) has music in the background. Quick Cuts V2 is for those that like just machine noise, and it doesn't have music.

This cleanup may actually have saved lives. The two doors shown in this video were completely unusable before you cleared away that vegetation, so neither the residents nor firefighters could have used them in the event of a fire. I hope that someday this lady's son finds a successful treatment so that they can enjoy spending time in the garden. Sunshine and plants are very therapeutic!

I remember the earlier videos is this series and wondering about the story. Thank you for sharing the background. There are so many people overwhelmed by family members who have mental illness. It's debilitating, but as a parent myself dealing with a daughter with mental illness, there is not much support out there. It seems to be less as time goes by. Your help here, I know, will be a gift of unmeasurable proportions. Thank you so much for your work, helping those who feel helpless and stuck in their situation. By giving them a garden, for even a little while, will give them room to breathe, space to think and in nature, it's so much better than being stuck inside, feeling like there is no escape.

I had a feeling that you would go back to complete this project. You are just too kind, George, and I'm sure it's very hard for you to say NO to anyone. This will be your greatest challenge, and your greatest accomplishment. I will be here, in America, cheering you on as you push through this nightmare. I know the family will love what you have already done. I wonder how many years it took to get this bad. It's a shame, but I understand completely that her son and his medical needs are far more important that yard maintenance. I wish her and her son peace. Thank you George, for everything you have done for so many people. You are a blessing to all of them, and to us, your viewers.

What a blessing you have been to this family ❤.
Looking at the years of broken rubbish piled up tells a really sad story. Now that the son is a young man maybe the mother can check into a 24hr group home for him and she can visit with him daily or weekly, also he can meet friends and do different activities. This will give each of them a sense of peace and rest especially for the mom also she can ask for help in getting much needed repairs so that she can be and feel safe in her home. My sibling was mentally ill and when he moved out and got help I could see relief on my mother’s face and she was able to rest. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I have really enjoyed this series and look forward to more episodes. I once heard some elderly parents talk about trying to deal with their mentally ill adult children. It was heartbreaking. They love their children and want them cared for at home but it is a challenge, to say the least. Cleaning up her yard so that she can enjoy it again is one less bit of stress in her life and I'm sure will help her immensely. Thank you for all you do.

Schizophrenia is so sad. The medications are very strong, often turning the patient into a zombie. Many patients refuse to take them for that reason, but then they deal with altered reality. Tell the mom she’s a saint. P.s. I knew you’d do the back….. blackberries not withstanding. (You’re a saint too)

I regret that often there isn’t enough recognition to the people that give care to those with mental illnesses. I feel like if it a choice between giving the needed care and mowing the lawn, well, very reasonably, the lawn will be the one that gets put on the back burner, not by want but by necessity. Thankfully there are people like George that absolutely Will make the yard a much better place and relieve the mom from that burden!😊

George you are so incredibly kind to go back to this place to tackle the backyard. The front was bad enough! I just can't believe what you achieved in this episode! They couldn't even use that back door up the stairs! Having an exit blocked is not safe! Now they'll be able to use it, and they will get a lot more light in the loo and bathroom since you removed all that growth up the wall. When I saw the old rock pool I felt quite sad. It seems that there was an effort made at one time to beautify the yard and that somewhere along the way all hope had been lost, but now you have come to the rescue like a shining knight in a fairytale. I'm sure the mother will be feeling this way. I feel so sorry for the young man, and for his mother. Schizophrenia is a horrible disease. I hope his caseworker and psychiatrist are making sure he is on the right meds and dosages so he doesn't fly off the handle. Thank you so very much for this. I can't wait to see how it looks when you finish, and maybe/hopefully it will be a nice place for them to relax, listen to the sounds of Nature and maybe indulge in a bit of gardening - but not blackberries!!!!! Hahahaha.

Love the way you contextualize each project. You never say too much or too little - just the right set up each time. You position your camera for the best angles. Your modus operandi is spot on - you show every step of the way in such a fluid and satisfactory manner in real time and time lapse. And you do have lots of competition on RUclips, but your presentation outshines them all. Plus your generosity and kindness of heart is just the tonic the entire planet needs right now with all the vitriol and hostility being put forth towards one another. Power to you my friend. KBO as Winston Churchill use to say = "keep buggering on"
