This. This right here is why I love movies and storytelling. It doesn't change the world. It doesn't stop wars or diseases but we all for a couple of hours, are entertained, escape, learn something from the story and feel the same emotions. In movies we all come into an agreement. We all laugh at the jokes, gasp in surprises, scream in horror, cheer when the good guy wins and cry when something breaks our hearts.

The phrase which killed me in this movie was when Tom Hanks ask John: "On the day of my judgment, when I stand before god and he asks me why did I kill one of his true miracles....what am I going to say? That it was my job?"

What hurts most about this scene for me is not the execution - it's the fact that an angel would rather die than see the pain and suffering in the world :'(
For me it's the fact no one else knows he's innocent. Especially the parents

It always gets me that when Paul says “May god have mercy on your soul, he’s talking about himself - he knows John Coffey’s soul isn’t in question.
I always thought in that moment he should have said may God have mercy on MY soul
I swear it would have been icing on the cake if he said "may God have mercy on OUR souls".

It’s also ironic that Stephen King is thought of as a horror story writer but 2 of the best story driven movies ever(at least 2) are his stories. This and Shawshank Redemption are 2 of everyone’s favorite movies.

Based on a true story of a 14-year-old black boy killed back in the 40s, falsely convicted and sentenced to death by electric chair. They didn’t cover the boys face out of fear of the dark. Stephen King wrote the novel based on that. And the use someone like Michael Clark Duncan, with an obvious, menacing stature and appeal, but the innocence and delicate nature of the young boy, to convey this idea. He really wanted to drive the point home.

They put masks over executed people because the witnesses have time seeing people executed and sometimes people's eyeballs would pop out.

John Coffey is a Christ figure. He appeared out of nowhere, as if he had just “fallen out of the sky.” He had foreknowledge of future events. He can see the good or evil that is in men’s hearts. He can heal illness and afflictions and resurrect the dead (if it’s not too late). He is innocent, with a pure soul, yet he is made to suffer and die because of the sins and wickedness of others. And even his initials are J.C., just like Jesus. (Recall the scene where John is watching his first-ever flicker show, and the light from the movie projector is illuminating his head from behind, just like a halo: The Christian symbolism is unmistakable.)
None of the reactors said a single word... Shows how powerful that scene truly is.
That’s what I was thinking, I’ve seen many of these reactors react to things very talkatively. Not this one.
I feel like this is the sort of storytelling that can change us. Everyone sees that scene and sobs; everyone feels the injustice; everyone says, "No, no, no" and wants to reach into the screen and stop it. If we can hold on to that feeling, if we can remember it and then act on it, we can change the world.

This scene. This movie. The acting, the music, the directing, the cinematography. The fact that Paul doesn't close John's eyes after he places the St. Christopher necklace back on him because he's afraid of the dark. If you don't cry during this movie, I don't believe you're Human.
When he says, "I'm sorry for what i am" it always destroys me. That might be the saddest line I've ever heard. If there's one that's worse, I don't want to ever hear it.
There are either people who watch this scene and cry like a waterfall, or who divert their eyes trying to not see this yet can picture it through audio and cry like a waterfall

Thomas Newman's score just adds an extra emotional punch to this scene

My daughter was watchjng this movie the other day and when i walked in this scene was on and she was mess i sat down beside her and just hugged her
And father of the year goes to you my man ❤ I hope one day she reflects on this and appreciates the moment..... your daughter clearly has a pure heart and soul if a movie like this can make her feel like that. I'm a grown ass 30 year old man and I can never come out of finishing it and not be crying 😭😭

I love how silent everyone was at the moment he died. Not just a heavy heart, but a weight lifted.
If I ever want to instantly mummify myself, I'm going to watch GREEN MILE, UP, and DEAD POET's SOCIETY in one sitting. The accumulated crying jag will literally suck all of the moisture out of my body through my eyeballs.

I’m not a cryer. But this movie had me blubbing like a baby. So much so, that I haven’t been able to watch it again. Same thing with The Elephant Man. Injustice towards the innocent is my Achilles heel. ❤

OMG, this is a phenomenal movie, and I don't care who you are, anyone who said they didn't cry at the end of this, is either lying, or they have no heart. And I cried all over again with you guys, and girls.
That's not fair to claim someone that doesn't cry during a movie, regardless of the content, has no heart. Surely you don't mean that literally...
Many wonderfully caring and compassionate people simply do not cry during fictional storytelling. There's nothing wrong with that.
Your clip selection is so good. To build up the reactor's emotions, in a scene where they are high to start and don't really change that much, can not easy and you made it look seamless. Great job.

Always a sure thing to cry on this movie, I saw it the first time when I was about 12 and soaked my pillow in tears, I was so embarrassed until I saw everyone else watching was crying too

Geez, I never noticed John saying "I'm in heaven" over and over, and it just got me all over again.
I think I was too upset all the previous times to hear him say it.
I gasped out loud at that moment the first time I saw the movie. He's trying to self-soothe with the song from the movie. It wrecked me.
I was a kid when I saw this movie. And honestly I cry the same way as the kid I was when I saw it. Back in 2000.
I think this scene is up there with 'Brooks Was Here' as one of the all-time great tear-jerkers.

John's fear of the dark is like how children are scared of the dark because they fear that monsters hide in the dark. With John being an angel or Christ-like figure from God, his fear is understandable because he's scared of the demons that hide in the dark.
John pleading to not let them put him in the dark still brings a tear to my eye.
I consider this film a litmus test for sociopathy, if it doesn't make someone cry there is something wrong with them.

The part that crushes me hardest is the part when you see John Coffey in pain after they pull the switch. Seeing him in pain absolutely broke me..

It just goes to show how emotionally powerful that scene is that not one reactor said anything the whole time. It was just tears & sadness for John Coffey, and being caught up in the story telling.
