Awesome originally had a similar meaning, just as awful did. But because awful sounded negative and awesome sounded positive people put them as such within the last century. Disasters used to be described as “awesome”

The anime Odd Taxi featured a teenager who overused "yabai" leading to remarks that her vocabulary was poor. The subs I watched translated it as "crazy" (as an adjective).

Even a native speaker seems to have trouble explaining what Yabai means

I think I know what yabai means but I have no idea how I'd explain it.

I've never heard one word having that many meanings before. I feel like if a word has multiple meanings, wouldn't that make it easy to misinterpret the meaning and start a misunderstanding?

since we have lots of homophones in japanese, and we often skip the subjects in the sentence in japanese, it seems we are good at understanding things from the context🙌

The US actually went through this exact thing before with the word "bad" being slang for "good". Some people complained that it would be confusing but it really wasn't because of context.

"Bro" has many meanings too, it can mean "brother", "please give me ten bucks", "dude", "hello", "what the FAQ did you just say", "hey", and so on
