I would like to speak up for Sam. He left the backing track on a bit for context of the compression technique, as you can get a great sounding vocal in isolation that may not quite fit the mix. So to keep from veering off, you do need the rest of it on a bit. Great job, Mr. Loose! I get a lot out of these videos and I think that you do a great job.

I never understood compression and never heard a difference.
So this vid is hopefully for me. 😅

Thanks for this video. Would have been helpful to hear the vocal in isolation. Loud guitars make it harder to hear the differences. Also annotations on screen make it harder to follow for sight impaired people. Many thanks 😊

If you really want people to hear the difference you should play the same, short piece with and without the different parameters. It is like you assume we can hear the difference from one listen. It doesn't work like that, we need to hear the same bit several times. It also doesn't help to A/B while playing the whole section it needs to be the same phrase so we can tine in to the differences.

Compression is really easy. All you do is send a signal through it, play around with the parameters, and use your ears to get that sound you want. Nothing else matters but your taste. You’ll soon find out that all compressors have their own flavor, which you’ll use to taste.

By the way; I do enjoy watching these types of videos though, just to hear how another brain processes the same fundamentals of compression.

@@bogard08 I don't really have a problem using or understanding compression, but I have a problem with what I consider (with all due respect) poor teaching methods. I have spent years teaching Board members the fundamentals of IT security, so I know of what I speak!

Literally can't hear the difference in any of these examples lol. Guess I've got a long way to go. As others have said it would be helpful to hear the exact same words in the before and after to hear exactly what the compression is doing. Naturally though I will go and try this on my own, I like that you explain what to listen for

The distinction is challenging to perceive, even with top-notch earphones, as there is no way to compare the compressed and uncompressed versions of the same passage repeatedly.

The BIG problem with all videos like this is that RUclips sound quality is not good enough for any listener to hear any audible difference between the before and after examples. And...as everyone uses different playback equip everyone hears something different

Did you ever do anything? I couldn't tell the difference on anything that was done and I was listening on headphones. You need to play the same segments every time. Personally, if I get words that are too quiet I will go in and manually raise the gain with RX 10 to a comparable level as the rest of the track.

14:35 why didn't you play the same section again?
